It started as a radio program and then moved to TV. Both were running at the same time, but the show became a major hit. It was the longest-running TV show of all time for decades until The Simpsons came in and snatched its record. The casting was one of the primary reasons for its success. Their first choice for the lead was John Wayne, but he recommended James Arness.
The rest of the cast was also perfectly picked and added elements to their characters. It was Dennis Wavers’ idea to give Chester his iconic limp.
They’ve gone on to be recognized around the world. A statue of Ken Curtis sits in California today. Amanda Blake’s work as Miss Kitty got her into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s Hall of Great Western Performers. The show did have trouble sticking to the date it was set in. You’d see stagecoaches, buschadero gun slings, and other elements that weren’t present in the 1860s. It’s also understandable that they had a few issues keeping everything consistent during a show that ran for twenty years.
Gunsmoke never had a proper finale episode. The cast filmed a regular episode and then, all of a sudden, the TV staple was over. There were five reunion movies, but not every cast member was able to return. The impact of Gunsmoke is undeniable. It ushered in an era of classic Western shows and gave us all a classic catchphrase. It was Marshall Matt Dillon who first told the world to “get the hell outta Dodge.”

Where in the world do you get all your misinformation? Chester's last name on TV was not Proudfoot. It was Goode. Chester Goode. Ken Curtis did NOT play Buck Taylor and Newly O'Brien. Actor Buck Taylor played character Newly O'Brien for the last 8 years of the show. The show did not start on TV in 1952. It started in 1955. Milburn Stone did not miss 6 episodes. He missed 7. Pat Hingle played Dr. John Chapman in 6 of those 7 episodes. Matt Dillon never told anybody to get the HELL out of Dodge. He told people to get out of town but he would not have been allowed to say hell on the air in those days and he did not say it to even nearly every villain. Not even close. Olivia Walton did not play Mrs. Matt Dillon. On The Waltons, actress Michael Learned played character Olivia Walton. Michael Learned was in a Gunsmoke love story episode where Matt had amnesia but she did not play his wife. There never was a Mrs. Matt Dillon played by anybody. Also, your title is dishonest and very misleading.

You've got it backwards about Chester. In the radio version of the series, Chester's full name was Chester Wesley Proudfoot, and in the episode "Marshal Proudfoot" (aired 20 July 1958), Chester's father comes to visit him in Dodge City. For the TV series, Chester's last name was changed to Goode.

Ken Curtis played a few characters before he did the Festus. Buck Taylor played the character of Newly O'brian. Buck Taylor is currently playing the character of Emmet on Yellowstone.

I love gunsmoke, and big, bold James Arness. I sure do love Eric Fleming as Gil Favor in RAWHIDE. He died at only 41, after he left RAWHIDE to film some stupid movie in the Amazon. Sorrowful. He would have gone on to be as big as Clint Eastwood. Miss all of them. Those were the days where you could dream big, as an average man or woman in the USA. Frightful this 23rd Century. My favorite Western was The High Chapparal, with the episode "Mi Casa, Su Casa" being my favorite for the charming but rascally Don Sebastian Montoya (Manolito and Victoria's father) as played by the wonderful Frank Silvera. Incidentally, in 1975, when my mother flew to Spain to meet my father on his R&R from an oil company overseas, she said that in one small city along the coast, every business would suspend operation in order that proprietors and customers could either stay within, or go home to watch Gunsmoke. It was this way every day at a certain time, usually mid-afternoon, and often the episodes were reruns--out of order, and out of decade--yet, each one captivated its audience.

Milburn Stone probably chose the first name of "Galen" for Doc because Galen was famous as the physician for Roman Emperor Commodus. Galen was Greek, and is still an important figure in the history of medicine and medical research.

Gun-smoke has always been and always will be my favorite western series. As a child when we would visit my grandparents in southern Illinois, my mom, dad, aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins would gather at my grandparent’s home on Saturday nights and all watch GUN-SMOKE around a small black and white TV. Gun-smoke holds very fond memories for me.

Overall, Gunsmoke had some of the best writing of any of the TV westerns. There is one big blooper that appeared in the intro in later years. When Marshal Dillon meets an adversary on the street during the intro, you notice his holster cords are untied. This would have made it impossible to effectively draw his weapon. The cords hold the bottom of the holster down and close to the thigh. In that intro, after noticing the untied holster, the scene quickly shows Dillon's upper body as he draws his weapon and the holster isn't scene. It was strange that this big snafu wasn't caught by the director or anyone else during the filming or missed during the editing process.

Gunsmoke was my favorite show growing up in the 60s. I remember seeing an interview with Ken Curtis, and was surprised to learn that he sounded nothing like his character. He just had an ordinary speaking voice with no trace of an accent. He was also a wonderful singer.

Fun little did-you-know about Curtis. He was once a member of the famouse country western band the Sons of the Pioneers, which is the same group that gave Roy Rogers his start, altho he was there about 10 years and had long left the band before Curtis joined.

I have many westerns that I watched, ❤️loved them all, because not only the stories were strong, but also the actors/actresses were strong and made it what is was. They were the best to watch and still are my favorites….just to name a few, my favorite of all time was the Lone Ranger because he taught gun safety to children and showed how responsible they should be around weapons, but also definitely loved Gunsmoke, Zorro, Paladin, Wyatt Earp, Bonanza, the Rifleman, Maverick, Flicka, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Rawhide, etc., etc., I loved them all and if I’ve missed any, it is because many are NOT being shown any more and some I’ve forgotten….horse stories were always with my favorites too, many were included in the westerns. My family watched all the westerns, it was our relaxing time and to be together then, especially after a hard days work for my dad. I also went to a lot of western movies, especially when John Wayne and Clint Eastwood were in them….including the Lone Ranger… 🤣. Many may disagree with me, but I respected Clayton Moore for his work and his character for teaching children how responsible they should be around the guns, plus teaching the responsibility for when they grew into adulthood…besides including to always show respect towards others. Many times he would bring Silver along and even Tonto would sometimes be with him. It made my day heroic and gave meaning to gun ownership…the Lone Ranger will always be my hero….I miss the good old westerns and other TV series that I used to watch….HIGH 5….❤️

I agree with you on Gunsmoke. I watched it for the first time not long ago and my favourite character became Festus! Incidentally I am watching The Rifleman right now and find it a bit too righteous with Lucas always teaching his boy Mark the difference between right and wrong. I'm not comparing The Rifleman to Gunsmoke though because I've watched worse just before Rifleman which were Have Gun Will Travel and even worse The Lone Ranger. I very much enjoyed Laramie and would watch it again just like Gunsmoke!

We were huge fans. On a family vacation to Los Angeles in 1958, we were able to visit a live set at Iverson’s Ranch. I was 7 at the time and we got autographs from James Arness. The particular show was “The Cast”.

Gun law was the original UK title for Gunsmoke. It has always been Gunsmoke in the US. However the 30 minute episodes were later syndicated in the US under the title Marshall Dillon. Ken Curtis did not play Buck Taylor or Newly O'Brian. Buck Taylor (actor) played the character Newly O'Brian for 6 or 7 years. Gunsmoke debuted on TV in 1955, not 1952. Gunsmoke, was one of my favorites, glued to the TV through my teens in the 70's. Right along with my dad. Great recap of Gunsmoke. They don't make shows like that in today' times. It is all computer crap that is not real. WOW. LOVE IT.

Your narrative is a disaster. Radio's GUNSMOKE co-starred Parley Baer as "Townsman". William Conrad, as Matt, asked what the hell his character's name was, and Parley said, "Chester Wesley Proudfoot." I know, because I knew Parley Baer for 36 years. TV's version had Dennis Weaver as Chester Goode. No need for me to repeat the many corrections seen below, but if you do another one of these, do your homework, and try getting something right.

I recall that Matt Dillon's role was supposed to go to Peter Graves (Mission Imposdible guy),James Arness's brother. But audiences remembered Peter as the Nazi spy in the film 'Stalig 13" and the producers felt that Peter would not be accepted by the audience.

My favorite western show is Gunsmoke, and I love to watch all the episodes especially the early ones when Mat Dillion is walking on Boot Hill, and is talking about the bad hombres. I get a kick out of that, and start repeating the monologue to my husband. We both find humor in what I say.😂❤

My grandmother loved watching Gunsmoke. She said it was the closest to watch remembers of her childhood. She liked the fact that when we went out of town chasing the bad guys, they walked the horses. She told me about one of the things that kids would do, they would truck gather around and peek into the saloons to see the Dancehall girls. She told me that they actually had less clothes on them and gunsmoke, but they couldn’t show that. Also, women were of all sizes and shapes working in a saloon. My grandmother was born in 1880s. And therefore she was at the very end of the time that Gunsmoke was set at. In fact, the old west that is so colorful as usually portrayed is between 1870 and 1890, with a heydays of the 1880s. The old west did not come to an end until the turn of the century when I give up it’s less gasp.

James Arness had a slight limp due to being seriously wounded in the leg and knee in the landing at Anzio. Arness was awarded the bronze star and Purple Heart.

i think this was adapted for tv in 1955 not 52 and chester was refered to chester with the last name goode in several episodes the clip you showed where kitty kisses matt on the cheek there was another episode where she kissed matt on the cheek

I never saw a Gunsmoke episode while it was running. In about 2016 I started watching reruns before going to bed. I watch an episode, sometimes two, every night. It is the only western I watch and I love the show. Prefer the earlier B&W episodes.

Our mom and dad would put us to bed and turn off the lights at 7:50pm. Then at 8:03 as we started to sleep, the Gunsmoke theme could be heard by us as my dad watched his favorite show. We would hear the traditional "dunt duhn, dunt duhn, POW as Matt Dillon drew down and shot the villian in the street." Then all was well and we fell asleep knowing our dad was on the night watch.

Marshall Matt Dillion always seemed to present a Dominant persona even when he was calm. I think he was the tallest man in westerns or maybe Chuck Connors’ Lucas McCain was. They were both Dominate in their respective roles.

Great video. Ken Curtis was a customer at my grandfathers Conoco on 44th and Wadsworth for years in the 1950's and 1960's and gave my aunt an autographed 8" x 12" colored photograph with a whole heap of love from Festus. My aunt gave it to me a few years ago and a I have it now. It is dated July, 1966. Ken and my grandfather, Cosmos were pretty good friends back in the day.

High Chaparral first and foremost! Of course I thot Big John was out of his mind trying to raise cattle in the Sonoran desert. 🤣 Still alot of fun with great cast. Lancer is my second choice. I've always been calf eyed for James Stacy. Bonanza and Gunsmoke are tied for third place for my fav westerns. All four shows had phenomenal casts and guest stars. I truly miss watching a good weekly western. Thank God for DVDs!! 🐎🐎🐎🐎

@@FactsVerse I like the one where Lee VanCleef is back in town for revenge on the sheriff. Lucas and LVC are at the bar. Lucas shoots LVC's whiskey glass out of his hand. Another episode where the antagonist was going to pull his gun behind Lucas. Lucas knocks the back rungs out of a wooden chair on his porch, with his patent quick fire. The guy rethinks his backstabbing idea; wisely slips his gun back down in the holster.

I agree! I remember as a 10 year old kid I made sure, as best as possible, to catch that opening scene of the rapid fire of that Winchester, model 1892, 44-40 shooting off 12 rounds in just 2 or 3 seconds.

And the continuity issues, timeline issues, and all those other issues didn't stop it from being a great show. I didn't hear any mention of the horses that Mat Dillon rode, I read that there were issues with having to find the strongest horses available because Arness was so big. At any rate, Gunsmoke was a fantastic show.

funny you said that because his palomino? big horse fit him well and I recently saw again a couple of the Tom Selleck westerns. I noticed his legs were way too long in the saddle and he looked too big for the horses he rode. Only the movie with Virginia Madsen, he seemed to fit on the horse right. I remember thinking when I saw that, "he should have a horse like Matt does" so funny.

@@FactsVerse The episode with Barbara Lord when Matt was forced to escort her to her fiancee through a prairie fire, indians with Matt being wounded by an arrow and she had get the arrow out, burn the wound and go for help. She falls in love with him but was tragically killed. I think Matt would fall for her too had she not been killed. EXCELLENT
