@@rumourhats Yes. The Government tried to tie Sterling to the Euro (by the Exchange Rate Mechanism). Influential speculators had a field day and drained the UK of several billion as described in the video. THAT was only a couple of billion. The Withdrawal Agreement threatens to take £ 39 billion from us while we have an NHS in crisis and homeless people on the streets, drug addictions etc.. There was an exchange rate agreement between the EU and Switzerland (not an EU member) and each time the Euro fell below a set rate against the Swiss Franc, the Swiss National Bank would buy Euros and in that way the Euro was being supported by Switzerland. In 2015, the Swiss had had enough and, without warning, would no longer honour the "peg" as it was called, numerous trading companies had relied on this "peg" and lost millions and a company called Alpari (UK) Ltd, went bust.

@Stouffer spot on ... proponents of joining the Euro were thankfully ignored. Monetary policy dictated by the European Bank, entering to fix he exchange rate atthe wrong stage of the economic cycle (ask the Spanish, Italians and Greeks about that one). It's all a stale European construct which will fail. Recent expansion to 27 states total madness. Overarching federalist ambitions of jumped up institutions so transparently laughable.

You must remember, Thatcher was the most unpopular PM EVER, until she initiated the 'Falklands Campaign' and sought the help of the evil media (Which it still is!) to help her out. The murderous slaughter of the young Sea Cadets on board the unarmed ancient WW2 ship, The Belgrano, was lauded and whipped-up by the media until the people were convinced it was right to have sunk it. The Labour party put the hippy, Michael Foot, in as leader to fight her. He was the worst choice they could have made. She became even more popular and more savage!

@Guardian angel If only our MPs agreed and weren't constantly trying to subjugate Parliament to the EU. You people only pretend to care about our institutions because it serves your interests due to it being packed with Remoaners. If it actually did it's job, you'd be it's most vocal opponent.
@guardianangel69265 жыл бұрын
@@Longshanks1690 You are of course entitled to your opinion, but there is no evidence, absolutely nothing, to support it.
@Longshanks16905 жыл бұрын
@Guardian angel First of all, please stop liking your own comments - it's really quite pathetic. Second, it is not my opinion, it is based on the incontestable fact that Parliament is trying to subjugate itself to the EU, against it's own principles, and the wishes of it's electors. And that the support for institutions like this is flimsy, at best, to those on the left who see them as a means to an end is beyond dispute. But if facts were the domain of the Remoaners, we would already have left.
@guardianangel69265 жыл бұрын
@@Longshanks1690 Parliament was elected by the people. Parliament is what makes the UK a democracy. The suggestion that Parliament does not represent the will of the people is completely illogical populist nonsense. Right from the start the advocates of Brexit never had a plan. Ever since the last GE they have been blaming everyone but themselves for their own incompentence.
@Longshanks16905 жыл бұрын
@Guardian angel What kind of childish nonsense is this?! Have you never heard any jokes about Politicians before, heard people say, WELLLL before Brexit that they are all self-serving, out of touch people who don't care about their constituents and only about getting elected again? Do you not remember the Expenses Scandal? This is an incredibly common sentiment on both sides of the political divide because that is how Politicians are characterised, and how people feel about them. Your idea that because they are elected that they actually represent their constituents is complete hogwash. But if you want to characterise one of the most popularly held ideals of the past five centuries as "populist nonsense," you do you I guess. And what do you mean "a plan?" We want a Free Trade Agreement with the European Continent, broadly speaking. No more, no less. It's the Remoaners who had to complicate everything with insisting "No HaRd BrEXiT!" and demanding to stay in the Customs Union and Single market, thus not actually leaving, as well as maintaining Freedom of Movement and the supremacy of the ECJ over British Law. None of those things were what the 17.4 million voted for. You accuse our "incompetence" as the cause of this but the REAL cause is MPs not doing the jobs they were elected to perform and deliver the greatest democratic exercise in the history of our nation.

I grew up in this period and although I am now much more informed, I was carried away with it all back then. I became an avid European and ECC stalwart. Being in Europe helped Scotland and gave us Scots a buffer against Westminster Rule, which we hated like any slave hates the yoke that binds them. It truly did balance the equation, especially after the Gerrymandered First Scottish Referendum for Independence. I still look back and say, how the hell did we accept that way of measurement and the full criteria of the referendum. Now however, in balance, I am happy that the type of constraint applied was successful. The SNP of today has a manifesto that’s a shadow of the true independence that we wanted, not taking off one yoke and putting on another much bigger one.

EU membership is similar to the gay rights movement in this regard. Once gay people obtained gay marriage, employment rights, and a reduced age of consent, they no longer needed to be allied to the Labour Party, as part of its rainbow coalition, and could then choose a party which better reflected their economic, cultural, or religious interests. The same with the EU, once trade links and all that goes with it were established, the EU could not longer offer trade as a carrot, however erroneous that carrot actually was from the start, and is now only left with threats back up by the stick. The people rightly ask. As very little or none of this apparent extra trade is going to be affected to any serious level, what exactly is the point of The EU, and why are we expected to pay over vast sums of money to remain a member of it? As well as a whole long list of other related questions. So they earnestly, repeatedly and ever more desperately, ask these questions of passionate Europhiles expecting a rational reply, but NONE emerges, but completely irrational sky will fall down stories, that you would not insult your own young children's intelligence with. They can't make a positive argument for continued EU membership, while the smart people of Europe increasingly suspect that the reason for this, is that, not even one credible reason exists at all, and likely never did. Or worse, if a compelling reason does exist, these disingenuous crooks, dare not tell the people what it is. When a situation like this is allowed to persist, then the time is ripe for certain kinds of conspiracy theories. Which may at first seem absurd, but as time goes on, ever more become, the only narrative that can possibly make any sense. Has May's life or liberty been threatened, at some time? Has she, and other key members of her cabinet, been made respective offers that none of them could refuse, so to speak? Because there is no other credible explanation for there actions. Our leaders and owners, better be very careful right now, they are treading on thinner and thinner ice, and the water could be very deep, as well as cold.

As someone from the Continent that lives in London, I hope(I pray) that YOU British will vote out of Europe. For the sake of Europe.

Napoleon is seen as a liberator in many European countries, even on other continents. He emancipated many people's in his empire, even issuing his liberal Jewish homeland plan in 1799. Starting with the earliest Norman rule of Britain, the Kings, Knights and Barons were all about the exploitative administration of their vassals. Now Britain is lumbered with the ancestors of those murdering and coniving "royals" that really underpin unelected power structures. Britain is the pariah state with unelected power, grim and unjust bureaucracy, taxing the poorest most. Not Europe. Look at the unelected House of Lords where cronies are appointed by the ruling parties. Look at the loopy judges, certainly not elected by the people. Look at the some of the highest indirect taxation in Europe, consumption taxes that hit the poorest most. Be aghast at the failing health service and the demonstrably cruel benefits system. Look at the out of control racist police force, the cover ups of "cash for questions", the Hillsborough scandal, Grenfell. See the waste of public money by unelected bureaucrats, the grotesque Trident upgrade, incompetencies with Crossrail, HS2. Observe the lies and manipulation of the pro BREXIT campaigns. Britain is the "Trouble" with Europe. Constantly blocking social legislation. Really, Europe is better of with Britain removing itself from European decision making. The EU is imperfect, but it is has been around only half a century and will reform and improve. Britain, on the other hand has been on a constant decline for the last 100 years, stuck in an authoritarian, class-ridden zombie state in which it slashes about between incoherent social and economic policies, not to mention the Northern Ireland and Scotland issues.
