In this video I use my new Weaver 205 leather sewing machine to make 10 wallets for friends and family. The leather is and 8 -9 oz veg tan I like this because it is very pliable and forgiving to sew, stamp & color. The stamps are laser etched from Corian counter top scraps
The WEAVER 205 sewing machine can be seen here

The author does like to kzbin.infoUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Suggestions: -pre cut a groove where you threads go and it will help recess them for a cleaner look. - try hand tooling some designs! Super fun and totally unique. That sewing machine looks like a beast!

Also, a rivet at the top of your stitch will keep the threads from pulling away over time. The glue helps, but can breakdown over time

Wetting or dampening the crease points with a little water on a sponge would persuade the leather to crease easier lay flatter and not try to unravel.

I took up sewing Cordura as a retirement hobby, and fight with myself daily about getting into leather sewing. It’s such a slippery slope! Then seeing the fly press for embossing just makes me all the more want to take the leap. DigBags

Joe, take the leap. Extremely satisfying. I got my prep and practice done prior to retirement, so once I retired this past September, I was set up. After 34 years of being a police officer and detective, I found that I don’t miss it one iota because I was prepped for other stuff. Do it!

I’d love one of these with my daughters art on it. I have one now and it cut it off of the original that I bought from her school. I just take it off and re glue it onto the next wallet. To have it permanently on there for a carry and put the original away….that’s a great idea✊🏻

If you want a better impression, you could wet the leather a bit, that's what we do when we carved / tooled leather, plus it will fold better too instead of hammering down and will prevent cracks on the crease .

Very cool! Looks like you milled those stamps, I've had good luck using a resin-based/SLA printer to create them as well. Great work! Couldn't tell if you did, but also I'll wet the leather before applying the stamp, and for smaller ones I'll just use a mallet since I don't have a fancy fly-press 😁
@gaiustacitus4242
@gaiustacitus4242 Жыл бұрын
At 7:08 you can see a laser being used to make the stamps, but I do not immediately recognize the material used. This is a much faster process than using a 3D printer. IMO, 3D printing (aka. additive manufacturing) is too slow of a process to be commercially viable. Even when you own racks of printers, the process isn't efficient enough to justify the investment in machines, supplies, power, and time required for care and maintenance. If you have enough volume that racks of 3D printers would be required, then it makes more sense to invest in injection molding or work with a specialty manufacturer to mass produce the items.

That Adler copy machine could sew 4 of those wallets together. It can handle up to 1" of material, plywood included. They used to use them to sew door cards together in cars. HEY JIMMY: those shims on the top and bottom of the forward/reverse can be adjusted so it sews in the same holes when back stitching. Looks like yours need a small adjustment.
