I have guitars that only cost me 200 dollars and they sound play and feel great. So I would never pay more than a thousand for any gibson
@robertanderson69294 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm not sure what the point of purchasing this guitar would be. Just because something contains wood which at one time was in a Gibson factory doesn't make it have value. That guitar is just a piece of wood that at one time was part of a "Gibson" guitar. You'd have to restore it to play it. And I'm not even sure what the point in restoring something like this would be. If you want a Gibson to play there are thousands of other ones that someone hasn't drilled full of holes. You can upgrade tuners or pickups in a Gibson guitar. You can even take a piece of sandpaper and make a pickup fit in your Gibson guitar. But when you start drilling holes, routing out entire bathtubs or altering the fundamental nature of the instrument it ceases to be a 'Gibson' guitar and becomes just another parts guitar you can find on eBay for $100.

When you’re talking mods under the batwing guard Angus had one where he installed the wireless under the guard so he could run through the crowd and people couldn’t grab it. That was a converted custom and he used it for Back in Black. More recently it was repaired to a two pickup no internal wireless and was his main guitar in 2018 when Premier Guitar did their rig rundown. (Angus had at least one other with an internal wireless a walnut in the late 70s with no neck pickup but a full set of controls. He used this in the BBC ‘Rock goes to College’ show. But only when running round the auditorium. The rest of the time he used a red SG with wireless taped to the stap)

Angus had 3 guitars with the wireless installed. His very first SG (walnut) had it put in August of 77 and that guitar got retired end of 78 tour. His highway to hell SG and his black and white custom both had it installed into the body as well beginning of 79 and then both were taken back out end of 79 and that was it with the wirelesses in the guitar. They were installed into the back and had a chunk of wood cut out.

The best kind of guitar in my book - old worn road warrior with developed personality. And you know that this is great player, because why would anyone put so much effort in modding and fixing it after all those battle scars if it wasn't great instrument in the first place? That said, I'm not a big fan of sting-through, sometimes it is pain in the butt to get string in that hole, and it doesn't look right on SG. So I'd put normal stopbar there. And all that extra wiring is sort of wasted, so I'd turn small switch into phase reversal (that sweet Peter Green sound) and replace extra knob with normal killswitch or coil split toggle. And maybe put something cool over those vibrola marks... maybe iron cross James Hetfield style or belt buckle with jolly roger.

I have a 68 SG Std that I bought new when I was a kid. It sat around in the store for a long while before I bought it, most likely because of the feature that I liked the best - the HUGE neck profile. It is bigger than some R7's I have played, and those are really big necks. The cherry finish also darkened quite a bit by the time I bought it, which I found out when the Vibrola came off. I replaced the Vibola with a stop tail, and replaced the original tuners with Grovers way way back, and eventually, when I sold those two items, I collected more money than I paid for the guitar, case and tax complete :) Great guitar. Would I rock that mangled SG? Sure would, but I wouldn't pay much for it - thats just my way. Broken and repaired guitars are not really my thing, so in my book (regardless of what the market would say), it wouldn't be worth more than about $800. And I realize I would likely never get it for that number. But that's OK.

It kills me how many people in the comments are saying this guitar is trashed or needs TLC. It's such a cool guitar as it is. Getting rid of those mods and 'restoring' it would be a shame. It's been turned into something so unique and beautiful. Guitars like this that got sacrilegious mods like this in the 70s and 80s when people didn't give a shit about everything being all 'perfect' and 'all original' are the coolest guitars out there. Please play them as they are and don't destroy them. They're a testimony to the ingenuity of the artists who built and played them. They're works of art. I enjoyed this episode but wouldn't rock... as I have my own: late 60's SG Junior, bought in 1981 for £150, at which time it had a (replacement) Tim Shaw humbucker. In part due to it being my only guitar until 1994, all that's left of the original is the wood (no breaks or cracks) and the two witch-hat knobs. It's had 4 bridges (including a horrible surface-mount Floyd Rose which I guess was a predecessor to the FRX), 3 nuts (now brass), 3 scratch plates, 7 different pickup configurations (I personally chiselled a neck pickup cavity in the mid 80's - it now has a pair of Bare Knuckle Riff Raffs), coil split switches, a re-fret and, yes, a refinish in white. It's my playing and tinkering history embodied in one instrument.

Hey Austin If you ever decide to do another Epiphone LP review and demo I would like to recommend you get the Epiphone 60's Trubute plus model and review that. I have to return that Lzzy Hale white explorer I got a couple of weeks ago from Zzounds because it has a few issues, since they have no more in stock and to be honest I did not like how the explorer feels while sitting down with it, I can't stand and play because of my back if you remember. Anyway, I have been wanting a Les Paul with 57's in it and coil split and I found this Tribute plus model on Zzounds and got it. Well it arrived on Thursday and man let me tell you what, it is THE best new guitar I have ever purchased next to my Gretsch G5420, this guitar arrived and is FLAWLESS!! I mean there is nothing wrong with it, well OK I did find one tiny issue but I was able to fix it quickly, the edge of the binding on the first fret of the was left just a touch rough, three swipes with a piece of sandpaper fixed that though. Here is what the guitar has and why you might want to look into it - Neck pup - 57 classic. Bridge pup - 57 classic+. CTS Pots and a switchcraft 3 way. Pau ferro with trapezoid inlays, AAA flame maple top (veneer), Grover locking tuners, bone nut. Push pull tone pots for series/parallel and I got mine in the faded cherry sunburst and it is GORGEOUS!! The neck is supposedly the 60's slim taper but to be honest I have 4 guitars that all have that same neck and they are all different lol, i like this one though it reminds me of the neck on that Lee Malia Artisan I had. It's flat feeling on the very back and to be honest it feels slightly bigger than an SG style neck, it has a 1.68 width at the nut but it doesn't feel as narrow as an SG does. It's just a great guitar and one that I think you should do a review on, oh yeah, and NO fret issues lol.

WOW FINALLY!!! you and 13 others and the 3 that commented are giving me hope that I am not crazy lol. Everytime I see one of these "vintage" guitars all beat up or heavily modded and the asking price is high like this one is I comment about it being overpriced and usually I get reamed out by others saying that I just "don't understand" that it's a Gibson guitar (or other makes as well) . Like I said in my post on this video, basically what you are buying here is some wood that was worked in a Gibson guitar factory since everything else that once was Gibson is now gone. Yet those same people tell me that my 1987 SG that I refinished and made one mod to, I moved the output jack to the side, is worth half what it normally is worth because I "ruined" it. LOL, I bought that SG from Austin here (Trogly) and when I got it the poor thing was in sad shape. The factory finish was white and possibly had some kind of a flag on it but I'm not sure if the flag was original or not, no it wasn't the Union Jack btw. Someone painted over that factory white with an all black top with a wide silver stripe running down the middle, but they did not apply any clear coat to it so the silver was apparently wiping off on the guys hand as he played because you could see where it had been getting wiped on to the black around the volume knob for the Bridge pretty heavily lol. I refinished it heritage cherry because a local guy wanted to buy it if I painted it like that. I was going to restore it back to white. After I finished it I could not get in touch with the guy. So after about 3 months of him not responding and no one else being interested in it for $900, I removed the cherry finish and restored it back to the factory white and I left the neck unfinished other than I put some Tru-oil on it and I put a stinger on it as well. I usually don't like SG's but this one I do so I decided to keep it for myself lol. But everyone says it's only worth $500 at most because of what all I did to it, yet a guitar like the one in this video comes along for $2700 and well hey that's OK? Lol not from me will they get their money.

I have a decent Bass which had a lot of the Headstock broken off, so I modified it by moving the tuner positions … In my opinion, it now actually looks better than the original headstock ! I do confess that I did a bit more of a tidy-job, but like the SG, the important thing was to make it playable again and it is perfectly fine. No doubt though there are those that would complain 'your headstock isn't right' … but what does it really matter to a perfectly playable instrument ??? Instruments are not about 'prettiness', but about sound. If they happen to look gorgeous too, then that is a bonus ...

I was very surprised that it plays and sounds amazing. The frets are a bit low now but neck is so good. Everything is original except for the tuners and a missing vibrola arm. But there're lots of scratches and dings and dents. However, nothing broken, crack or repaired. And it's still a lot cheaper than $3000.

You mention about the crack, I was watching a video with the guitarist from Greta Van Fleet who has a 61 Les Paul ( SG actually) and the body is completely cracked, the lower part below the pots is held on with gaffa tape. Oh and that doesnt look very authentic...

My gold top les Paul has the same mahogany figuring in the cutaway!

Wouldn't rock the modded sg but that one with the original pickups I would. Those heel cracks scare me after seeing that white sg!

Believe it or not, this guitar is still on reverb!

For me to even consider this sg for a restoration I'd need the vibrola to come with it for that money

That poor thing looks like it was on tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan. The price just as insane as the guitar is beat up.

Why don't you try a similar type of series but of guitar from famous artists. I'm sure it'd be cool :)

That price is pretty rich considering the modifications, sketchy-looking headstock repair, and cracks. Nothing about the instrument looks professionally done or reassuring. I'd be afraid of it breaking during shipping - and even if it arrived intact, it'd still have to be handled with care. The intonation is probably awful. Around $1000 is top dollar for something like that, in my opinion. The natural SG you showed after looked much more appealing. I liked how it was worn - it was obviously played a lot!

I dig it, but not for that price. If it were reasonably priced, I’d dump the kill switch, slap some aged covers on the pickups, either install a stop tail or maybe a trapeze tailpiece and play the hell out of it.

I don't understand. Why didn't Gibson go "neck through" with all SGs as soon as these necks started separating? Trying to hold on to the one piece solid body mystique?
@R3TR0R4V34 жыл бұрын
Good lord, why would anybody do ANY of that to that SG? Lol. I especially don't get the string-through addition. What were they thinking?!? 😂
