Hey Lisa: Seeing that first 'Meat' T-shirt reminded me of my school days when we all had to tell the English class a 'Saying' that we'd heard...... When it came to my turn I used that famous old Quote; "One Man's Meat - Is Another Man's Dinner" .... The WHOLE class erupted with laughter, but me being a bit Naive at the time, I didn't have a CLUE that I'd Miss-quoted and it should have been "Is Another Man's Poison" ...... It did UP! my popularity ratings though - and I'm an Introvert TOO! - There, let's ALL 'Come-Out' and join the Quiet-Revolution of Introverts EH? ;-)

Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for this video, because I'm one of those people that obsess when trying to figure out the right keywords for titles and bullet points. I'm almost a shame to admit but sometimes it takes me an hour to write what I think are good keyword titles and descriptions, and my t-shirts still don't get found or sale.😔😔 So, this video explains the mistakes I have definitely been making. Thanks again!!!😊😊😊
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie! Thank you for stopping by. And this is EXACTLY why I made this video. I have a private student FB group and many of my students talk about taking forever to write titles, descriptions, etc. You are not alone. A lot of people learning have perfectionism when it comes to this creation and upload process, and that can actually hinder you. So rest assured you are NOT alone. I bet more than half of POD creators struggle with this. Glad I could help!

Great to understand a little more about how the algorythm works and thank you for alerting about the keyword paralysis! It's so easy to get carried away by this idea of "the perfect publish". At this moment I'm trying to relax and enjoy the process, I think it really helps to keep this business, at least at first, as a side job; as it may take a little long to start selling
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
I actually think almost everyone should keep it as a side business no matter how much you make. It certainly is a side business for me. That helps me enjoy it more and I never went into this with full-time income expectations. And thank goodness because the income is up and down like a yo yo! The expectations you set in the beginning set the tone. Often times if your main goal is to make a living before you master it, it's easy to lose sight of the learning process, and your expectations and motivation can get out of whack quickly! Fun fact! I never ever set a goal to become an entrepreneur. I always thought I'd have a 9 to 5. It just happened as a result of doing what I enjoyed online. Too many people set these financial goals without even discovering if the opportunity matches what they really want to do or enjoy.

Same, i made a gamer shirt related to social distancing/introvert/quarantine with original quote and sold some so yes you can get sales just because you know the niche and can relate to it.
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it! I've found that non introverts don't truly understand what it means. They think it's about being shy, aloof, anti social, etc. I'm none of those things, and that is actually an advantage because we know how to speak to and relate to the niche. Soooo true!

Great video! for the first few tiers, we have to constantly rotate and upload new designs till we find some converting designs. But I'm not sure, for how long I should keep one design up. currently I keep each design for 3 days. This also gives the idea that we shouldn't always go for low competitive low demand niches. With this strategy, we need to try high demand highly competitive niches to get a decent number of clicks.
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
When I was on the lower tier I rotated almost every week. But we did not have daily upload limits at the time. That part also makes it tricky. That’s a hard one to gauge though. I can understand the frustration of not knowing when to delete the design and try something else. I remember it being an ongoing guessing game. I just had to go with my gut until I was able to tier up. It was also much less competitive back then so it’s hard to compare with now.

Hi Lisa. In your video you mentioned that amazon is constantly testing new designs, by recommending them to visitiors to see if they get sales. Do redbubble constantly test new designs also by recommending them to visitors too? (I understand from your video that if they do, then these recommendations are based upon the keywords used in new designs and if they are the same keywords clicked on/bought by customers before.)

@Lisa Irby agreed - ppl should just design what they like or what their creativity leads them to. The amount of these YT making videos as if there is a foolproof formula. Also a true creative or artist will create and share rather than just chasing trends, keywords, algorithms etc etc etc. Some of the YT videos have encouraged problems like ppl copying uploading 100s of poor quality 'designs' with 0 creativity or flair and it blocks others. OK rant over - great channel.
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! That's exactly why I wanted to show this particular shirt. It didn't follow any set rules other than targeting spaces I knew had sold before. If you are so boxed in to a foolproof formula or "set rules" you'll never be able to unleash your creativity....and that's what POD should be about! As a creator, I don't like set rules or feeling boxed in. And that's exactly why I love POD. It gives us freedom to create and explore.

Hi Lisa! I'm new on Merch, I always choose 10 colors for my shirts. Do you think I should choose 5, as I saw in your video?
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
I don't really focus on number of colors. I only choose what I believe looks good with the design. Sometimes that's 5 shirts, other times that is 10. Having said that, I have heard some people suggest having too many choices can paralyze shoppers and I did try to limit my choices before. But I don't always. Sometimes I get drawn in by "Ooooh that color looks good too!" So I end up choosing more than 5. lol

I've got 277 designs on Redbubble in about 10mths but only sell something every few weeks. How do I take the next step and sell more frequently?
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
At least 1 of 3 things are happening, and it could be more than one. 1. You are not in spaces/niches where there is enough demand. 2. Your designs aren't standing out or appealing to buyers when they are found. 3. There is too much competition in the niches you are uploading so your designs never get found. You have to fix one or more of the above. The tricky part for me to answer is, I would never, ever know which one (or two or three) applies to you. The only way to know or fix is continue uploading until something sticks. When it does stick, you'll do more of what works and less of what doesn't. But it's ALWAYS at least one or a combo of the list above. Always. The hard part is figuring out which ones. I know that's not the answer you want, but it's the truth. There are so many variables in selling.
@domarchie95583 жыл бұрын
@@LisaIrby Thanks for your advice. It's been frustrating because it's a lot of hours work for little money. I do love it and think you are right. I will keep uploading and hopefully find a trend or niche. Thanks.
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
@@domarchie9558 I know what you mean because when I first started with Redbubble I hardly sold anything the first six months to a year. So I can understand how it can be frustrating but it’s worth it when you do eventually create design ideas that sell. I know it’s hard but try not to compare the amount of designs or timing to others because everyone’s story is so different. I know people who have stories that are so different than mine. Some sell a lot faster, some take longer there’s just so many variables with niches and keywords. I also believe that the reason I’m selling well is because my designs are found in Google. People obsess too much over redbubble traffic but you can also get traffic outside of their site.
@domarchie95583 жыл бұрын
What is the difference between tags and description? I put a lot into tags and little into descriptions. Tags are searched for what about the description? How is it important if at all?
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
@@domarchie9558 I think the tags weigh a lot more than the description when it comes to search within their site, but the description matters outside of RedBubble too (Google). Now, in terms of exactly how much weight RedBubble puts on tags relative to description......only RedBubble knows that. None of these sites will ever give away exactly how their algorithms work, but you can get clues based on what you see ranking (i.e. the tag spammers taking advantage of putting anything in the tags.)
@erlissemorgan92103 жыл бұрын
I do think that trends are making sales in the beginning, but then since it becomes "trends" by redbubble searching bar, it becomes overrated because most of the people searching for trending designs are mostly sellers on redbubble.
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I said the same thing in one of my podcasts. The numbers are not from customers, but from designers looking up phrases they are curious about.
@LisaIrby3 жыл бұрын
Oh and one more thing...the keyword tools are created by 3rd party people. RedBubble does not give away any internal keyword data so if the data is not coming from them, it's hard to put much trust into how accurate it is.
