You expect games to have specific death animations and voice acting for each potential death in a game? There could be DOZENS of unique deaths. Maybe less! Gollum is a game that asks so much from you for no reward at all. It is literally a game without rewards. The collectibles are there only to be collected just because games have to have collectibles, only they forgot to give you anything to encourage looking for them (yknow, like concept art or behind the scenes extras or a secret ending for getting them all). Even fucking Indigo Prophecy had rewards for its collectibles. Your choices mean nothing, you can complete the self-arguments with minimal consequence or struggle. Your bird will always look a single way at the end of the game despite the appearance options you choose for it. Control is taken away from you in critical cutscenes where you should be the one taking certain actions, in favor of more busywork and platforming. This is not a game you "win". Gollum is a character who, by his nature in the middle of the story, can have no satisfying narrative conclusions here. It just takes and takes and takes.

I played the shit out of that Hobbit game when I was little and I still stand by it as the best adaptation of the story out there.. It captures the spirit of the book way better than the movies did imo and I don't even mind the Hobbit movies, but they'll never be The Hobbit (2003) for Playstation 2.

I just still can't figure out the logic behind this massive waste of resources. A game that any amount of market research or focus testing would have consistently and thoroughly proven there was ZERO interest in. No one cares about Smeagol/Gollum's escape from Azkaban. They care even less about the pointless labors he did there. The devs and playtesters HAD to know this looked incredibly bad and played even worse. They HAD to know that nothing short of exactly how he looked in the films would be acceptable. Smeagol/Gollum is not a sympathetic character beyond the sympathies shared by Bilbo and Frodo refusing to kill him. And if anything this game only proves the arguments that this isn't interesting content because seeing it made into a game and how terrible a result that game serves as definitive proof. And that ending really seals it: imagine making a game where players DREAD playing more of it.
