The show is based on a book which is loosely based on something that happened in real life. Some of the stuff like names and such are changed. The real life person which John Blackthorne is based on, his name was William Adams. Hiroyuki Sanada's character Lord Yoshii Toranaga was called Tokugawa leyasu in real life and the same can be said with alot of character on the show. most of them are loosely based on real historic people.

Btw.... this story is based on the IRL history of Japan (the characters name are just changed from their IRL counterpart) and what's crazier is that Wano arc is partially based on this part of Japanese history. (Toranaga = Tokugawa = Momonosuke.... Previous Taiko = Hideyoshi = Orochi....) Oda just mix and match various parts of Japanese history together to make Wano along with some Japanese fairy tales.

Sailors with nothing to go by but the stars, travelling from England across the Atlantic to the New World, which has barely been explored (the pilgrims landed on the East Coast of the USA in 1620), and then all the way down the coast to the tip of South American, all the way back up north and then across the Pacific Ocean - this is an insane journey, even today with GPS and motors and refrigeration of food. Only the Portuguese had made any sort of maps, along with important notes on where to land for fresh water and where the coast was dangerous from rocks/shallow waters, which is why they were able to hold a monopoly on water trade with China and Japan. Blackthorn is an English pilot, hired by a Dutch shipping company. Their mission is to attempt to get to Japan and open a new trade market for the rest of Europe. And they are ordered as well to destroy any Spanish/Portuguese they encounter because the Catholics are almost constantly at war with the Protestants during this time period. They are not pirates who will attack anyone/everyone and take their shit. They have a gov't sanctioned reason/excuse for who they target. The book this show adapts was based on true events. Names are changed but a large number of the characters represent real people. While all the everyday stuff is fictional, the important events are all historically accurate as far as is known - the Japanese keep good records.

The show is based off the book of the same title as well as the original 1980 series (and apparently musical and video game) but they are all based off of actual historical accounts. The names are different and some of the events aren't in the correct order but for the most part it is fairly accurate to actual history. They even have the real clan emblems and battle armor of the leaders in the show. Also keep in mind, there are different types of Christian religions. The Portuguese and Spaniards at the time were mainly Catholic or Jesuits. Blackthorne was Protestant which was a newer form of Christianity (at the time) that strictly opposed and wanted to reform the Catholic church Fun fact, what we call Japan originated from the Portuguese interpreting early Mandarin Chinese of the word. The Japanese have named there country "Yamato" (shoutout Rob) and then what it's now "Nippon" or "Nihon" (日本) which means sun's origin

Fellas, historical background: This is a fictionalized version of the rise of the Tokugawa (Toranaga) Shogunate, Christian factions were fierce in the 16/17th century in other words being a Protestant to Catholics is as bad as being a Muslim or other heathen religions, navigating the world was a monumental task as there wasn't even the Panama canal meaning anyone from Europetrying to go around the world had to go to to southern tip of S America to get to the Pacific Ocean. And the tip of S America is dangerous, even today, to cross due to the storms and the climate there. I hope that helps some

This is in the perspective of Catholics at the time. Not my personal opinion. Religion in that time was taken much more seriously. Excommunication was basically death at that time so a religious leader's words were taken literally. So Catholicism and the Pope was the preeminent organization of Europe.

It’s worth mentioning that England and Portugal have the oldest alliance in the world. They’ve been friends for hundreds of years and have helped each other greatly over time. However, the late 1500s - mid 1600s was a period in the Iberian Peninsula called the Iberian Union, in which the Spanish King was also on the Portuguese throne-So Portugal was forced to be England’s foe. This was an aberration as usually Portugal was enemies with Spain and friends with England.

I really wish ppl would stop comparing this to Game of Thrones. By that logic, the old HBO series “Rome” is the original Game of Thrones… it’s utterly ridiculous.
