Don't struggle! The way subtitles get used in this story carries a lot of the cultural subtlety. You will miss out if you just skim over them. Better to pause your recording whenever you feel you've missed something so you can watch it again. Nobody will mind. In fact. your reactions will probably be better for it.

a dubbed version makes sense for almost any show but this one. the viewer is meant to share the englishman's confusion at not being able to understand the language (and the culture). you might miss some finer details of the game of thrones style intrigue, but the show does a good job making the broad strokes loud and clear.

Dear Nikki & Steven. Thank you very much for reacting to this amazing show. You could go above and beyond if you found the 1980 version of this series and did a contrast and compare viewing. Just FYI - this series take place while Europe is embroiled in recurring wars and periods of unrest due to conflicts between the Catholic and Protestant faiths, amongst others the Protestant British wars against Catholic Ireland (1529-1603) and the Eighty Years' War in the Low Countries - a series of conflicts and wars from 1566 or 1568 to 1648 between Protestant Netherlands (which in late 1590'es allied with Protestantt Britian) and Catholic Spain. This is why the British pilot Blackthorne is piloting a Dutch ship raiding Spanish settlements in South America.

The original series is on DVD & BluRay and they absolutely should watch it. The 1980 series took a very different approach. No subtitles, but most of the Japanese dialog is in Japanese, the cast is largely Japanese, and it was filmed on location in Japan using mostly Japanese production crews. So it looks like Japan instead of Canada. And no CGI of course.

If you watch some of the making of and behind the scenes videos, they talk about how it was a priority for the show to present historical Japan with as much authenticity as possible. So every detail - from the costumes to the language (1600's Japanese is not the same as modern Japanese) to the way people move and the ceremonies and on and on - was carefully represented. The show had the largest ever Japanese crew for any TV or movie production filmed outside of Japan. Actor Hiroyuki Sanada officially had a role of producer on the show, so when not acting, he spent his time on set making sure every detail was correct. By the way, the FX network's "Shogun Viewers Guide" web site is excellent. It has all kinds of features on the characters, episode summaries, the historical background, the making of the show, etc.
@paintedjaguar3 ай бұрын
"present historical Japan with as much authenticity as possible"... Then maybe they should have found a main actress who doesn't reek of 21st century woke. I'm sure she'd be fine playing a contemporary California girl or something but she's completely miscast as Mariko. Go watch the original miniseries and you can see how it's done in the wonderful performance of Yoko Shimada. Even just the way they move is worlds apart.

Rutters were books of notes taken by navigators, describing landmarks, weather at times of the year and which direction currents flowed. They even made notes about the type of sand/terrain at the bottom of seabeds, which was ascertained by using a lead tube with wax in it, that was on a long rope. Sailors "swung the lead" (a phrase used for an easy job nowadays) and made a note on how deep it was to the sea bed and what kind of sand, coral or gravel stuck to the wax. They had compasses, of course, but before accurate and reliable clocks were invented there was no way to measure Longitude. These rutters were top secret, priceless, and jealously guarded by navigators.

His son is Yoshii Nagakado. Just an example to make getting names down easier. He'll pretty much exclusively be referred to as Toranaga-sama in the show and simply Toranaga to us.

I'm the same age as you guys but I watched the original Shogun miniseries in 2011 as research for a samurai in a writing project at the time. The original miniseries (on Paramount Plus now, by the way) was based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell just like this was. The gentleman who played Hiroyuki's role in that version, Toshiro Mifune (who was apparently just as committed to Toranaga as Sanada was), was reportedly the first choice for both Obi-Wan Kenobi (because George Lucas was partially inspired by the samurai movies he made with Akira Kurosawa) and Mr. Miyagi. Which is funny because I keep telling anybody who'll listen that if Chozen is spun-off from Cobra Kai the ideal actor to play the bad guy, his arch enemy, is Hiroyuki Sanada.

Blackthorne (while they were still on the ship) said "rutters" not rotters. Magellan's Pass (the Strait of Magellan) and navigating it was HEAVILY guarded Secret known only to the Portuguese and Spanish. A rutter is a navigation diary, a ships guide for navigation points, longitudes and latitudes, sea conditions, etc. So for a Protestant Dutch ship with an English pilot... enemies of Catholic Spain and Portugal at the time... to have a Portuguese rutter detailing Magellan's Pass would equate to a war crime and mean instant execution. But as long as the Portuguese dont find out about that rutter, then the crew can bluff their way out (or so Blackthorne thought).

I've waited for you to finish the whole series before I could binge your reactions. This series ... this is something worth watching. This is next level amazing. It's the perfect blend of real and fantasy, in that all the characters are inspired by real people, but it's still dramatized. The attention to detail is utterly bonkers, and it's simply beautifully shot. And it's terrifying. When I was a kid ... a teenager, as it was ... I read the books behind the show, James Clavell's "Shogun", and I was amazed by it. I told my mum at one point how much I admired what these people were and how amazing the culture was. "Oh yes," she said, very calmly, "It's a lot of beauty ... clothes, buildings, artwork, poetry ... all to cover up one of the most barbaric, blood-soaked, murderous cultures without ANY respect for human life in human history! These people thought cutting your belly open with a sword to bleed to death in raw agony was not just acceptable but desireable. Is that really something we should strive to emulate?" Then she prodded her index finger on my forehead and told me I was better educated than to fall for glitz and glamour and to look deeper at the rot beneath it. The thing she taught me was, incidentally, not that JAPAN's history and culture specifically was awful, but that a LOT of history was, all over the world. She has much the same view of Romans, Vikings, the European middle ages ... you name it, really. I got my master's degree in history many years after that, but I did remember that lesson of hers. To always look deeper. Very few of us today, would be happy living in a society with laws like the ones we see in "Shogun", for instance. But that doesn't mean it's not intensely important as a historical period.

A new falconer in Texas actually trains a wild caught Red-Tailed hawk and helps it through it's first year of life out of the nest and then traditionally releases it back into the wild to help propagate the species. Young red-tails are notoriously bad at surviving the first year on their own. The new falconer does all this under the guidance of a Master Falconer and the observation of the Texas Hawking Association.

I agree with you he was the one character actor that didn't fit. That was one of the flaws, and the terrible CGI of the earthquake was pitiful too. And for me they didn't quite push the envelope as far as the graphic content which for me adds more realism. I'm sure it wasn't the producer's fault it was probably the network having them edit out graphic content.

So, just a quick background here: This story is a fictionalized account of real events leading to the establishment of the Shogunate that would rule Japan until the Meiji Restoration (which led to the Satsuma Rebellion that you enjoyed watching in, "The Last Samurai.") All of the characters (including Blackthorne,) are fictional versions of real life people that were connected to these events. In terms of the languages that you hear, you should understand that nobody speaks English to each other, although I think Blackthorne lapses into it occasionally when he gets pissed off. He is an English pilot serving aboard a Dutch ship, and so when he speaks with the other crew he is speaking in Dutch (although we hear English.) When he speaks with Mariko, the Portuguese, or the Spanish pilot then he is speaking in Portuguese (although we hear English.)
