A few miles from you. Same issue, same results. 41* lol, every house had a thick frost on it and it stayed there till the sunlight hit it!

It was 41 along the coast. Most of the city was in the mid-30’s and I saw pockets in the 33-34 range. Raleigh and Charlotte got a freeze. Their forecasts for this area have been pretty lousy.

Is it just me or have there been eruptions nonstop this year? That would certainly explain some cooling.

The volcanos have been going off, even before the freeze in Texas. And actually Texas has always had some pretty crazy weather. We are truck drivers and we have seen blizzards in Texas. Once we went all the way south to find warmth and there wasn’t any so we had to go over to Yuma Arizona and then ended up in the Imperial desert in Southern California. There we found warmth. But Lately it’s been cold in those places too. Volcanos have always done this , the difference is there are a major amount of volcano eruptions and earthquakes like never before. And more hurricanes and tornados than ever before also.

It was 81 the day before the frost. We are getting up to 90 after the weekend. It isn’t about the highs. 80’s in the day can still mean a frost at night. Anything can happen when there is a cold outbreak. They had frost and freeze warnings throughout much of MS, AL and even northern LA.

We had a frost last week (about 32.5F for an hour or two). Luckily it wasn't too bad as I don't have any tender annuals out yet. Burned some of the apple / plum / aprium growth points, but they're recovering. Unfortunately, we lost like half the foliage on a potted japanese maple... We're still 2 weeks out, but hopefully smooth sailing from here. Our berries have been flowering really well and don't seem to get set back by the frosts (hopefully we'll get to try some new stuff for the first time). Your garden is looking great!

Ugh, so late for a frost. You're at a pretty high elevation, though, if I remember correctly. That's a harsh climate out there in NM: very cold winters, very hot summers and very little time spent in between seasons. How does the lack of humidity make the temps feel? I wonder if the dryness makes the "cold" feel warmer and the "hot" feel cooler? I've never been in the Southwest during the summertime, only the winter.

Oh it was in the 80’s before the frost. We were at 82 the day before. 90 next week here. High temps have no correlation with frost. It’s all arctic plunges.

Great videos. I love your straight forward explanation & experience . Can I please ask, what is the Black matting you are using in your Yard? Plastic, Weed mat?? I considering doing something very similar to destroy lawn area & convert to a Food Forest.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 жыл бұрын
It is called weed barrier. It is a permanent product made to smother everything under it, so it'll kill all weeds and lawn underneath. I have several products linked in my Amazon Storefront, and a video here on how I use it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joWUo5iFfpZga6c Please do not confuse it with "landscape fabric." Landscape fabric is very thin and cheap and needs to be covered by a thick mulch layer to be effective. It also doesn't last long. Weed barrier lasts many years. Mine is almost 3 years old and gets cooked in the Carolina sun all summer and still looks new.

You are wrong! Formation of ice crystals does not take energy from the surroundings. Quite an opposite, when moisture freezes, it releases heat, preventing additional freezing.

Why wouldn’t you just bring all of the container plants indoors? Thought that was largely the purpose/benefit of growing in containers. You must’ve really felt confident about the water method?
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 жыл бұрын
It's completely impossible to move that many containers, let alone fit them anywhere. We are talking 50+ containers. Tens of thousands of pounds. They stay outside all year and do not get stored for the winter because there is no room to protect them. Of course, when they're dormant in the winter time, it doesn't get cold enough here to hurt them. Now that they've all been growing for 6 weeks, they cannot be protected, so they are susceptible.

I have 78 fig trees in containers! Really, we had this happen THREE TIMES here in middle North Carolina within a two week period! It is not even closely realistic to "bring them all in the garage!"
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 жыл бұрын
I know your pain. I would have to take 2 days off from work: one day to bring them in and make the space, and a whole day to carry them back out and put my garage back together. Once they leaf out, they’re on their own, unfortunately.

@@TheMillennialGardener I just started watching videos about this beetle and what to do if you see the signs, which is tiny hole bored into the trunk with little toothpick like protrusions (which is actually the saw dust).....they get in there and make "galleries" they call them....lay eggs after infecting the tree with a fungus. Really the only thing to do at that point is cut the tree to the ground. There is something they spray on the trees to prevent, but it is not 100%. I have never had a problem up to now.....always something.

Do you get splitting more or less on the inground figs vs containers? Have you actually culled any fig varieties and do you think they would do better in ground? I think you should definitely do a tour/critique of all the figs. I never heard of Noir de Barbentane until you said something about it the other day.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem to matter whether they're in ground or in containers. It's rain on the fruits, or dramatically cooler nights than days in the fall, that cause the splitting.

Mr Millennial sir I have come to listen and learn from all you teach. This is a little off subject from this video but I want your thoughts please. I watched your root pruning video and today I got permission to dig up some small fruit trees plum peach blackberry's etc from a old lot they tore house down and going to clear the lot. I did cut some of the roots so thinking of your root pruning video I added some good soil and rooting harmone then I removed about 35% of the top growth so the cut roots could support the tree? did I do right? Planted in ground
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Were the trees still dormant, or have they leafed out and are actively growing? If they've leafed out, you're going to want to make sure you did a few things: 1. Don't plant the fruit trees deep. Plant them a little elevated. 2. Make sure the top 2-3 inches is a nice layer of good quality compost. Then, mulch on top of that to keep the roots protected from the sun and hold even moisture. 3. Water them in with fish emulsion. Fish emulsion is my secret weapon against transplant shock. I have an in-depth tutorial on how I like to plant my fig trees here, but you can apply this to many fruit trees: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJCQkn-ueLR8brc Removing the top growth was a good idea.
