Great tips. I agree too many videos out there were just pushing IR pack sales but with Helix v3.5 and after the stock cabs are all you need.

Thank you for the kind words! Yes, 3.5 onwards has stopped my GAS for any IR packs. I do have a lot of them lying around from before I had the know-how to tweak though, haha.

This is awesome Justin! I own a few of the XR IRs and really do love them but I'll give this a try to breathe some life back into the stock cabs. My only bit of feedback would be that we can use the Global EQ instead of using up one of our limited effect blocks and get access to the same EQ controls.

Yeah if you are going to be in the same spot consistently might as well use the global. I had it on for the longest time and tried running with it off recently, I needed a parametric eq to achieve the same effect.

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah I shift my cuts on the parametric EQ for every amp (sometimes no post amp EQ) so the Global EQ is something I won’t use. They’re quite minor cuts though, so technically I could apply the EQ in post (I’m a producer on the side).

Have quad cortex. Stock cabs sound like with a blanket on, even changing mic position. IRs from celestions inmediately make my quad sounds way way better. Amazing video! I will try it, but WHY i have to make those changes to stock cabs? Why a lot of brands didnt eq correctly, to sound more like the real cab? Last question, do you think stovk cabs with your advice on eq sounds better than third party IRs?? Thank you!

To be fair, accurate modelling of gear sometimes is different from making the gear “record-ready” like what we hear on the album. For example, Marshalls are incredibly bright and ear-piercing in real life, which is what we get when we load up a stock setting. We have to tame the sound in post. The advantage of 3rd party IR’s is that you’re also incorporating the signal chain that used to capture that sound, like the mic’s, the mic placement, the preamp, and any combination of other mics that was used (some IR’s have blended mics). Even the room and its reflections play a part in the cab resonance. So if you like the 3rd party IR for what it offers over stock cabs, it’s all good! I think the stock cabs offer some flexibility over IR’s, for reasons mentioned in the video.

Good video. I may have missed it, but did you show what you're doing with the parametric (cut) EQ? Also Jason Sadites has a great video showing that IRs are just EQ. He uses Ozone Match EQ to make a stock cab sound nearly identical to an IR.

Oh you’re right I didn’t show the parametric EQ tweaks! Sorry about that. I did a -3dB cut at 3.5kHz, 0.71q to introduce a gentle smiley face EQ. And yes I saw that video too, what a great tool!

Thank you! Yes, it all depends on context. EQ is like the sauce on a dish. Sometimes you need it, sometimes you don’t. I’ve had great success with just the amp EQ and low/hi cuts on the cab, and the shelf to brighten or darken the patch.

I got one set the Greenbacks while I’m using them I’m not blown away I don’t know if I’ll ever be happy with my tone

It comes down to personal preference, if it works for you, that's great! And sorry to hear about not being happy with the tone, sometimes it's finding the magic with the gear you have, other times it's the connection with the gear. Have you tried other ecosystems like Fractal, Neural DSP, etc?

I also got of the Greenbacks previous from the XR and they were really god. I have been using DH´s IRs for almost 2 years now, I got them on a Mooer Radar and now on the HX Stomp, They are the best ones I have tried. But I am still looking to get MY OWN sound, I loved the tones I can get from them but still trying all the ones I got@@ShreddingFinn

I’ve never been happy with my tone, currently using the XR ir but before that it was helix cabs before that some other IR, I don’t know why I just can’t get happy with my tone it cuts through the mix but it’s missing warmth,

Sorry to hear that. It’s good that you’ve achieved one of the tone goals of clarity in a mix. Warmth is a whole other game and hard to get right. I’ve made a preset using the Retro Reel in the front of the chain for analog tape character and for saturation, want to give that a try?
