For me the number one benefit is the cost efficiency, because having a cab, loaded with good speakers is one thing, but buying a Royer or Neumann and a better preamp costs the same as the guitar rig. With IRs you can play a lifetime for about 100 bucks.

I agree with absolutely everything and yet after years of using ir’s and modelers I recently bought my first amp and cab (mini rectifier + matching cab) and the sound in the room (playing in a live set up) is incomparable. Literally my bands entire sound improved in an instant. I still record via Ir’s they are for sure the best way to record

I built an oversized isolation box big enough for an oversized Mesa Recto 4x12 cab and mic'd it up with several mics in semi-fixed positions V30's and Eminence Legends (X pattern). Its in a closet and so I can crank any amp I have and get a consistent recordable sound. I found with IR's I was having almost too many options. So in my case less is more and it gave me a fun project to do too. I'm just analog and old-school with my tone. I have an ENGL vertical 2-12 special edition red that absolutely crushes! Something special about capturing the sound in that moment. I'm certainly not dogging on IR's...I have X50 and it kicks ass. Cheers

I used to not get it either. One day I thought, I have these 2 great amps but I only record using plugins. Why not use my amps? Your channel and others proved to me that IR's can work. I bought a Two Notes loadbox and some IR's and haven't looked back. Later I bought a Revv G20 and it's my main amp now just because of the built in loadbox. I love the sound of a cranked cab in the room, but 90% of the time I'm using IR's and I completely agree with everything you've said 100%.

I agree with you about everything you mentioned in the video, you are 100% right. However, one big and for me very important thing real cab has and IRs don't is the (hate this word, but don't know the other one for this) is the feel and direct unprocessed sound, when i feel response from my mesa cabinet that bumps directly to my chest and it is triggered from me playing and inspiring me to keep playing and writing music. That being said, i also use IRs when recording, convenience is there, no doubt.

a) This channel is one of my favourites b) everything you say I completely agree! When I discovered IR's in particular in conjunction with the Torpedo Captor and the Kemper, I never again mic'ed an amp, unless if I had a studio at my disposal. Another great thing about IR's is that you can REALLY quickly test a variety of amps and settings that would cost you a true fortune if you had to use a studio for it. Also, I now do all my guitar tracking at home and only go to the studio to do vocals and drums. Saved me £4000 on my last record!! IR's for the win! And yes, NOBODY will ever tell the difference!

I have never been able to get IRs to sound as good as micing cabinets. For me, IR recording has latency or strange monitoring which make capturing my performance difficult. Maybe I'm just used to getting the sound the way I've always done it, but real cabinets give me the fastest path to the sound i hear in my head.

I was really considering buying the helix stomp and using IRs just as an alternative to a real amp in live situations but I live in Brazil (and not even in the big cities like Sao Paulo, it's kinda the underground scene of the underground hahaha), so most of the places we play don't even have FOH monitors and the possibility to mic cabs, so we have to play just with the sound our amps can give to the whole place. Maybe one day I will be able to use them.

IR’s make sense for someone that doesn’t play shows and lives in an apartment around other neighbors. I prefer cabinets though, even if I had close neighbors I would just spend the $ on the Rivera attenuator to bring the sound down. Louder is better Computers, IR’s, recording software and all that becomes extremely expensive and most can’t afford all that. It’s not reality for most people, most people these days are on a budget. So, a low watt/cheap amp would be the best solution with a 1x12. (Used is better)

My apartment is on the top floor and I am in an isolated project studio room, so I get to enjoy both worlds, but the ease of use and flexibility is awesome with IRs, the fact that I can change cab sounds so quickly is great, while also being able to make my own IRs with my franken-cab 4x12 project (UK v30,G12-k100, and a greenback and Eminence DV-77 real soon to complete that) and modest mic selection.

Ever since I bought a bunch of your IRs, my recordings got worlds better. I used to try and make a Randall ISO cab work in a terraced house. I don't want to bother anyone obviously, so I was apprehensive to really crank the amp even with the ISO cab (which does work great but isn't a miracle worker). I spent next to no time mic'ing the speaker up for the best result, so I'd track all the guitar parts with a sub par guitar tone and my mix would suffer in the end. I was basically swimming upstream the whole time. Now I primarily record using Neural paired with OwnHammer, my mixes are so much better. I generally start with guitar sounds, so to start with a tone I really am proud of makes blending with everything else as much less stressful process :)

It’s a fine balance. I mike up my cab often with two different mics, none of which I can ever find IRS for, and the sound is huge and full. That room isn’t treated but with a 120W ENGL head even with the master on 4, and channel volume on 2 that’s loud. I have not been able to get IRS that sound close and that don’t need a lot of EQing in the DAW to take out the hardship frequencies. Still playing around with all options, even considering an ENGL cabloader.

You missed my favourite reason for using IRs.. Live tone can match studio recording. Always nice to have that perfectly mic'd mesa with a 414 mic and that hpf removing that super low end at a gig, rather than a crappy cab with a battered sm58 because the sound tech doesn't have a sm57 available.

It's very easy to take IR tech for granted. I remember about eight years ago I got into the digital amps thing, first running my multi fx units through IR's with the builtin cab disabled. Amazing how quickly that made my life easier. And like most people who find something new, I caught the bug and was always looking for different tonal variants. I'm pretty happy with the IR collection I have these days though I still try out new packs from "time to time. The ease of use and flexibility is hard to beat. Cheers

For bedroom musicians, home studio owners and hobbyists, Cab IRs is the best solution for all the reasons that you mentioned. A sound very close to real one to enoy unlimited hours of playing without worrying about the setup every time. Again, if properly mixed into a song, or used in a live concert who can tell the difference anymore?

Even when I gig , I run my Modeller>Poweramp>Mesa 2x12 for stage volume. Then I run an XLR output from my modeler with an IR straight to front of house so I know im always sounding consistent.. unless you have the isolation, micing a cab is impractical. I've had to really comes to terms with that. I'll ALWAYS prefer the mic a cab, but the conditions have to be favorable for it to work. What I'd like to see is more tube heads with loadbox/IR functionality built-in. 20 watt, 50, 120 watt amps across the board should be considering this, almost as standard now. With the Grandmeister 40, the Astro 20 and a handful of others, a new standard is being set. Next we need these kinds of amps with more headroom and big boy tubes.

All the reasons you state apply to why I have a Kemper Stage. For the price of one boutique head one can buy the Kemper, the entire Ownhammer catalog, all the Michael Britt and Top Jimi profiles plus a slew more for pretty much any amp out there. I'm not going to claim that the flexibility of any profile is the same as having the amp in front of me. But the flexibility of having all those different amps when profiled well, plus the Ownhammer IR's, far outweighs this. IMO for us guitarists the biggest hurdle is "feeling it" over studio monitors or headphones and getting used to that response. I got used to that in the 80's when I had to stop using my amp in my apartment and using a Rockman. What I would've given to have even a PODxt back in those days!

"Better" is subjective and doesn't necessarily apply to all players in all situations. For example, one major drawback of IRs is that you can't get the cool feedback you'd get with a cranked amp. Yes, I know you can simulate feedback with a DigiTech Freqout pedal, but let's not make every single fucking thing artificial, please.

I managed to improve my Neural DSP plugins and extend their range. They sound even better now. All my gears sound better. I am speechless... I had a Two Notes CAB M+ and thought I would never be even close. To my taste Ownhammer IRs are everything I love. Special mention to the Dizl JS and Eng JS mixes. I'm also living in a condo, so Cab IRs have been a godsend for me. Besides that, I suck at micing real cabs, so my $1500 Mesa 4x12 would end up sounding worse in a mix than my $30 IR pack anyway :D The only downside for me, which is often talked about when the subject of irs comes up, was the optional paralysis of having too many cabs at my disposal. Now that I've been using them for a while, I just have a few go-to cabs I use, and that saves me a lot of time.

I agree with all points made, but there are many cons too. Soundwise, IRs mathematically assume that the whole setup of cabinet, mic, preamp, room and so on, is a so called linear-timeinvariant-system. In reality all of those components are nonlinear and timevariant to some degree. While the result may perfectly match the cabinets frequency response, you won't get things such as speaker drive, preamp saturation, program dependent frequency responses, reactive load for the amp and many other details. In addition, things like guitar feedback, a realistic in the room tone or mic bleed into other instruments, are hard to get starting from an IR. I like to use my IRs in combination with EQs, Compressors, Saturators and Reverbs to get the job done properly.

I have tried Ownhammer, GGD and ML Sound Lab Ir's compared to my Zilla cabs micked with Sm57 and MD421 with several heads (Mesa RA100, Boogie MKIV, Peavey 5150, Fryette D120). In my experience, when you have a good room and little skills in mic placement, I always prefer the real thing to record killer guitar sounds. By the way, IR's are very usefull to record tracks in silence and test some cabs/speakers/mic combinations. Cheers from france ;)

Good video man, but would be interesting to specify for what kind of applications you prefer IRs over mic’d speakers - only recording? Also, would you still prefer IRs if you had the opportunity to build a sound proof studio at home and afford all those expensive cabs and mics? I love IRs for live streams and demoing or just playing at home trough the headphones. But for proper recording of music that you actually intend to release, I think even slightly sloppy mic’d cabs in the studio will give the mix more life than ‘pristine’ IR of an expensive cab.

IRs are a convenient, efficient cheap compromise, but to say IRs can replace cabinets is a big stretch - there's currently no time series sampling used to sample cabinet IRs, and IRs don't capture nonlinearity in the poweramp, speaker and microphone. One can argue that those are minutiaes that probably wouldn't matter in the final mix (most likely true), but that's also exactly why IRs can't replace cabinets for me.

Having spent 30 years in my studio mic'ing up my stockpile of amps and cabinets with my stock pile of mics and preamps, 95% of the time these days I opt for using the UA OX for no other reason than it speeds up the flow. The OX gets me pretty close to what I'd mic up myself but the time it saves when you're stacking guitar parts and keeping the ideas flowing outweighs the alternative. WIth budgets tighter then ever, would rather a band spent an extra hour on being creative instead of waiting around for me to change the cabinet and mics.......

One can find themselves falling down the IR rabbit hole. If you have one or two cabs, you have limited options so you mic them up the best you can and spend the rest of the time creating music based on your sound. If you have all these IR's available, you can find yourself spending a majority of the time trying different Speaker, Mic, and Cab IR combinations.

statements made at timeline 6:00 forward not all true some far from being true respectfully. Cab impulses are like a photograph taken in time and are static, flat rep of one given point in time and does not include the live dynamics that come with micing a real one using your fingers & moving air, speaker cone movement, hitting the mic diaphragm and the bouncing of sound of room acoustics. Sorry. Play through a real amp mic'ed on crunch tone like a Vox AC30 would establish this for your ears and confirm that.

To me it look like a way to get yourself deeper into the rabbit hole😅. Attenuators with ir's + audio interface + good monitors can get very expensive, much more expensive than 1-2 cabs which thats what the average player ever use. Allso in my opinion taking a tube amp and connect it to digital device with digital ir's, kind of takes away its magic...i mean for volume issues just get regular attenuator.

In ur studio setup it makes sense that you use IR's but like you said real cabs have their place. If I'm writing music it helps to hear that punch from a cab to get into riffs. Thanks again for the great advices. I have just watched your video on the Torpedo Captor X and since I already own an Orange Rocker 15 amp, I am considering buying this to play at low level connected to the computer. However when you are mentioning the Helix platform, I am now wondering what's best. In your opinion, what sounds better? The Helix or a real amp with load box and IRs? From my understanding, the Helix can't replicate the attack on your play and the feeling that the cab by displacing air produces. I do rehearsals with a band so I like the small form factor of the Rocker 15 and there is always a big 4x12 cab where we play which to me makes sense to keep the amp.

IRs are very difficult to integrate in a digital system like L6Helix. If you are used to use cabinets, they sound very digital...the difference is huge and make me frustrated. It's not easy to find / create an IR that works well at all. I mean running an IR inside a small cab with a speaker like Celestion F150M (which is ideal to reproduce an IR) and a digital amp simulation. I spent weeks looking for a good sound but nothing found until now. I'm crying :(

I'm using DSL20H with York Audio IR, just like you, but my records sucks.. It sounds amazing in direct response but not good after recorded in Reaper or Ardour. I see a lot of guys using presence and reverb but when I use the head through send output there is no presence, ressonance or reverb. I'm kind of lost here, any advice will be very appreciate!

I agree with all of that , but in the beginning IR will cost a little bit much than cab no ? I mean you need proprer speaker for playing with your guitar , i have cheap speakers ( they are good but i dont know If for a musical use if if will be good ) and dont know If i can play guitar with it

I love real cabinets. But they're too big as you say to own them all. So I compromised for one cabinet and a crap load of IR's to change the tones.

What’s your favorite Ownhammer mix for fighting excessive high and low end? I’ve been struggling lately with guitars that sound bassy and harsh. Thanks!

Reasons to choose a real amp and cab: 1 - i'm heterosexual 2- play some metal and my chest says ohh yeah! 3- elon musk sucks, i like real engines. 5-... you get the point. Jokes aside... thr feeling of playing real tubes, a real amp on a real cab inspire you in a way that no emulation can...you the sound is from those warm valves, you are making it, that gives me goosebumps ans i never get goosebumps with digital stuff, they have come a long long way i am aware, kemper has done something amazing profiling but to me i am 100 analog.

my questions is this - isn't there a difference in low end and in general between a real cab and an IR, since the IR is just a static picture and the real cab moves air dynamically?

I agree up to almost everything except they sound identical. Yeah, capturing the impulse response of the pulsating membranes (speaker -> mic) is indeed a very good way, but still it's not the whole truth. Why? They do not account for the distortion of a speaker during complex waves. That is, if you play a sinusoidal wave through an amp speaker you'd get a (preferably) not distorted, harmonics free notch in an FFT graph. But this is rarely the case with amp speakers. People *want* to distort their cab sound, because they also like the characteristics of the distortion given by each cab. The result of this? The speaker's bandwidth often decreases (!) when the medium (membrane) is distorting the sound. And this creates a dynamic equalization on high frequencies that is NOT possible to capture in an impulse response function. This generates harmonics, which are often very pleasant (they are multiples of 2, 4, 6, 8 etc) to hear, and I personally also prefer them. This is how you *can* distinguish between a real miced cab, and an impulse response. The latter sounds brittle and harsh at 1kHz to about 2-3kHz, because of that effect.

The real question then is: Why do you have so many real amps? 😂 What’s so much worse about the modern-day amp sims that you would still rather spend all that money on real tube amps? I currently just switch back and forth between “all real” (Marshall JVM + 1960 AV cabinet + Shure SM58A Beta) and “all simulated” (Kemper, now with the OwnHammer IRs, rather than the stock ones, thanks to you!).

Say, i try my amp line out with IR. Somehow it feels like the sound of the amp without a cab go pass the IR a little, this is so strange... what could it be ? No matter what IR i use, i see and hear a bunch of high freq pass 6khz. This make it harsh, i do remove it with a LP filter. On my headphones doesnt sound as harsh as on my phone speaker. I use Catharsis IR mixed and also Landcaster SMG pack. Apart from those harsh highs, it sound cool... it is weird, i tried using a vst poweramp. Should i try the line out to a DI box to the interface pre? Could it be the cable? I kinda dont want to spend money on a torpedo if the line out can do the job... i will rather spend that money on a good reamp box to be honest

also forgot one more... its WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY Cheaper lol. for the same price of a real 4x12 you can buy 1 or multiple packs of IR's with 5 to 10 different company's, 2000+ different variations for those cabs and you get the exact same sound everytime... no guessing and making sure its miced properly again

All of the above. I use the Celestion IRs with great results. That said, I cannot get the thing that happens when you have a real speaker cab driven with 50 to 100 watts a few feet away from the guitar. The interaction is not possible with IRs.

There is way to much color to the amp. Like look no farther than that comparison video you did of a bunch of amp heads. You basically made all of them sound in the ball park of each other. I basically purchased the jcm800 studio after watching all of your videos even did your exact settings with 2/3 of the od pedals you were using along with the amp settings. Never could get it to where you were at and that’s using comparable speakers. Now I still have the amp, still driving it the same but using creambacks and man… in the room it’s incredible. No it still don’t Sound as pristine as yours, not even close but I’m using the real deal in a real setting. No slamming here, I honestly enjoy the living crap out of your videos.. your playing, your songs… man. I just have to remind myself that.. dude unless your using his set up those amps will not sound the same in your hands lol.
