This was one of his earlier song when he was still pretty clean cut and making the type of music that the labels wanted him to. He said in an interview once that he told himself he would sing what the labels told him until he made his first million, after that he would only make the music he wanted. If you listen to his song in order of release you can tell when he changed.

This song got me through a rough time during my second divorce. I learned during my first one how important it was to be in my daughter’s life (I learned a LOT of stuff during that time). This song reminded me not to make the same mistakes. Thanks for the reaction on this song. Cheers!

"Who's That Man" is a song written and recorded by American country music singer Toby Keith. It was released in July 1994 as the first single from his 1994 album Boomtown. The song became Keith's second number one hit on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) , The narrator discusses returning to the home in which he used to reside. His ex-wife, children and their family dog still live in the residence, but the wife's new husband has now taken the place of the narrator. The music video for this song was directed by Marc Ball, and premiered on CMT on July 21, 1994. It features Keith driving in an old neighborhood, and singing and playing guitar in a dark room. Throughout the video, scenes of a man and a woman, and children are playing outside. It was the last music video where Toby Keith had a bi-level haircut, and the first music video to feature him with his cowboy hat on. "Who's That Man" debuted at number 74 on the country chart dated July 30, 1994. It charted for 20 weeks on that chart, and became Keith's second Number One on the chart dated October 8, 1994, holding that position for one week. And fyi he said in the beginning turn left at the old hotel.

@6:21 @BYSC I broke up with my high school sweetheart with idea that she could find someone better than me. She wanted to go get a career in art and I let her go but we found each other again and ended up getting married. What I believe is that my wife's happiness is what matters to me. Even if that means she finds another that make her more happy and I have to suffer without her love. As long as she is happy that is what matters to me.

This song came out when I was little and I always wondered if my dad felt this way. Even though he didn't like my stepdad, he respected him for taking care of us. Even though my mom left, she really had no choice. He was never home and cheated on her. When he started using drugs, it got worse. There was about 2 years he disappeared.

This song hits different for me these days. I work with my ex-husband A LOT in order for him to remain present in our son's life. Even my fiance speaks with him often, encouraging him to stay the main father figure to our child. His priorities have shifted in the last few years, and while "it would be so easy to let nature take its course" as my fiance says, it's more important to our son that his own father is the man who helps raise him, that it's his values and perspective that shapes our son (13 y/o) into the man he will become. My fiance is prepared and will gladly step into that role should he have to do so, but he doesn't want to, because he knows how much my son loves his own dad and wants him there. So the two of us continue to include him and make things as easy as possible for that to happen - sometimes to the point of making it difficult for us. But I always tell my ex-husband that he and I started this family with our son and it should be us that sees it through. Hopefully one day it won't take so much of a push on my part for that happen.

Keep up what you are doing, you are doing the right thing. You are putting your child first. You son will only benefit from how you handle this period of his life. He will remember that you were open & inclusive to his father being an active part of his life. If for some reason his father should not step up, your son will know it was not because of anything you did that prevented his father from being present which unfortunately happens frequently. So many parents use their children as weapons against each other, causing discord, dissension, alienation, etc. that the kids are lucky if they get to adulthood without trauma and lifelong issues. If only more parents were as conscientious as you and your fiance. I think it's very admirable. When things get tough and the pushing feels downright exhausting, just think of your child and the great man you have standing by supporting your efforts. And, if dad fails to step up, your child will be fortunate to have him as a roll model and all of you will ultimately benefit from the road that was taken, knowing that you did your best for your son. I wish you and your family all the best.

Instead of the aftermath of a divorce could this not also be a soldier mistakenly listed as KIA coming home finally. He knows his family has moved on at last and gotten on with their lives, but he wanted one more look before he did the same. He can't show up and say "I'm back", because that would ruin things.

My take on this song has always been, that he more or less abandoned them. (That's why his truck wouldn't be recognized) And that, years later, he is having some regrets, and wanders into the neighborhood, to more or less see thingshis old life, being appreciated by someone after someone else. No opportunity left to change the path he chose.

This song reminds me of the situation that occurred with my daughters father. He screwed up really bad and lost me and then he walked away from her as well. He even gave his rights up and then over the years would show up causing more confusion after she had been adopted. He even asked for another chance with me and although I wasn’t and could never be mean to him, I wasn’t interested in rekindling anything from our past. I think this song is from that perspective of having regrets and seeing another man taking the role he should have stayed in. Just my two cents.

As a child whose parents divorced when I wasn’t even six months, I would rather have seen the parent who never visited. She died when I was seven. I would have liked to have memories if her even if in brief sudden visits. All I have are of other people who told me of her. Adults think they do best not seeing their child & short of abuse, a child wants to see an absent parent.

Yes sir Billy, I've been there. We were HS sweethearts, got married in '77 and divorced (her idea not mine) in '87, Less than 6 months after the divorce she was dating, who knows she might have been dating while we were married. We had 2 boys, one 9 and one 6 at the time of the divorce. She was a good mother. When I first found out she was dating I told her that I had no control over that but if I ever found out either of my boys were being abused by him or any other man, I would kill them without a second thought and she had no control over that. She knew this crazy country boy was not bluffing. I am happy to say everyone is still alive and I haven't done any jail time. I would love for you to react to the song Tears by Jason Michael Carrol. It's about a dad that doesn't have custody of his daughter.
@Greg4fun
@Greg4fun 2 жыл бұрын
My perspective is this song goes deeper than just divorce. In my opinion the narrator (Toby) pretty much up and abandoned his family. They moved on without him and now he's having regrets seeing them happy with another man. I don't think it's as simple as divorce. I get the feeling in this video that he doesn't even see his kids.

Billy I'll give you credit because this song is really hard to understand the context of it but the PoV is the singer/dad is dead, Toby hints at it in the lyrics when he says " that's my house and that's my car, that's my dog in my backyard" or when he says " those kids have been through hell, I hear they've adjusted well" and lastly when he said " turned around in the neighbors drive, I'd be hard to recognize in this pickup truck, it's just an Ole fixer up, drive away one more time, lot of things running through my mind, the less things change the more they seem the same" Granted it could be taken as an ex story ( hence why I gave you credit) but the wording, the low undertone and the instrumental suggest a sad song indicating he's dead and they've moved on

This "reactor's" generation has a tremendously hard time being able to focus long enough to grasp a songs mere storyline . it reflects the meaningless shallow "music" they have grown up listening to. and THEN when he DID finally understand the song's meaning, just the mere serious nature of the storyline made him feel "awkward". A strange shallow generation. The attention span of a goldfish. Very sad indeed.
