RIP Brad Delp, one of the greatest rock vocalists ever. Incidentally this song has won numerous polls for best rock song of all time and the story of how Tom Scholz basically created the entire album by himself (except for the vocals) in his basement is legendary. Also, this is '70s rock at its finest. This album was released in 1976 and yes, they were from Boston.

There are some great videos online of how he created the album. Its remarkable that what your listening to is exactly what he recorded in his basement without studio edits. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGLGYXWulLinrKc One fun note. I play guitar and back in the 80s I bought a rockman which sholtz created. It is the greatest guitar equipment I have ever owned.

Brad Delp is hands down the most underrated major rock vocalist of all time. Everybody who knows classic rock has heard his voice, and yet he's not in the public consciousness in the same way that Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury are. Thank you for reacting to this song and giving him some well deserved recognition.
@Spo-Dee-O-Dee

Brad was an excellent fit for what Tom wanted to do, but in the pop milieu Steve was the only arena rocker that ultimately mattered and Freddie among the elite male pop singers.

Funny thing is that this wasn’t recorded by a band at all. This is two people. The singer, and a guy named Tom Scholz, the songwriter, the dude who plays all the instruments on the album, the producer and engineer. You said it sounds precise, and that’s true.Tom was a MIT trained engineer. The band you see on the back cover was added after the record label signed Boston, read Tom. These musicians did add parts to the studio recordings, but primarily all parts were played by Tom and Brad on vocals. Most amazingly at all is that most of the album was recorded in Tom’s basement, which back in those days was virtually impossible to do. Keep going with this album. Just continue through the songs as they’re listed in the running. Really, no one track is vastly better than the others. They’re all incredible, so you may as well listen to them in the order Tom intended.

I came here to say basically what you did. Initially, the "band" was Tom, who spend I think 6 years perfecting the sound and the effects, most of which he created. To get the final sound, all he needed were Brad on vocals (all the harmonizing was with himself), and Sib on drums. Every time she said "the band" I kinda giggled because I know the story. It's true that Tom had to cobble together an actual band to tour, because he couldn't play everything in real time without the tape overdubbing to get the original sound. I kinda feel bad for her because going in blind on Boston is different than just about any other "conventional" band. Once she reads the comments or does some digging on the various WIKI pages, it will be obvious how clueless she was. But that's ok, we can forgive it because she is young and she felt the same impact we did almost 50 years ago when hearing Boston's sound. I think the only track that wasn't done "in the basement" was the last track, which was "hitch a ride".

@@markh.7650 I totally cut her slack. There'd be no reason for her to know any of this stuff from 5 decades ago. She's found the album, that's what matters. And she's in for treat after treat as she works her way through this.

The album is considered to be one of the best debut albums ever. The music was written by Tom Sholz. Recorded in his basement, Tom played every instrument except drums (played by Sib Hashian,) and Brad Delp singing all vocals. No cut and paste in those days. All overdubs had to be replayed and resung directly to tape. They became a touring band with the addition of Barry Goudreau guitar and vocals, Fran Sheehan bass. Every track on this album can stand on it's own as a huge hit. Most popular songs for reactors seem to be "Foreplay/Long Time," and "Hitch A Ride." Hope you enjoy your trip down this rabbit hole. Looking forward to sharing your experience.🤘😎❤

Boston is a band that made a habit of recording one album every eight years (except for the first two), but, nevertheless, each of their albums became an absolute event in the world of rock!! Boston lead guitarist Barry Goudreau, along with their subsequent vocalist Fran Cosmo, also had a short-lived side project called Orion the Hunter, whose only self-titled album was released in 1984. Tom Scholz is an amazing feller. He started writing tunes while going to M.I.T. After getting his Masters in mechanical engineering he goes to work at Polaroid while building a home studio. He recorded most the album there and on his initial demo's played all the instruments except the drums and vocals. He built his own custom guitar effect pedals to get the sound he wanted as well. He even had his own line of guitar effects under the name 'Rockman'. Sadly the company failed after 14 years. His pedals are highly valued collectors items now. "Foreplay/Long Time" next perhaps. The instrumental song, "Foreplay" he wrote while still in school at MIT. Cheers.

I heard this song in junior high and I still feel the same way. I felt back then 45 years ago. Watching people in your generation express the same kind of emotion is really amazing. You’re great at condensing your assessment of great music.

The first song on their debut album. And when this song comes on my playlist... there is an involuntary reaction to turn up the volume.

Arguably one of the greatest debut albums of all time! And what REALLY makes it even more special is the fact that the guitarist recorded this whole album in his basement with equipment that he put together!!

When the guitar player is not only an accomplished musician, but an engineer, he shows he has the smarts to create an album worth of songs, writing all the parts and then needs to find others to form a band to perform the music live. I was surprised the second album sounded as good as it did for a follow-up effort with little time to repeat what years of ideas gave us on this first album.

Boston is the perfect morning drive to work music. You'll sing along, tapping on the steering wheel and arrive in a good mood.

This song evokes More Than A Feeling Indeed. It's their most famous tune, but you're in for a real treat if you listen to the rest of the album as well. Every single song is incredible, it's quite possibly the greatest debut album in rock history. Nothing sounded quite like this before....or since!

20 years ago, I worked staging for a Boston concert. Brad Delp was the only one for all the gigs that I worked that personally thanked everyone for out hard work. Very much appreciated and miss you, Brad!

@VeryVocalPro Not on the final release. Tom replaced Sib's drum tracks with his own. Those studio tracks are all Tom Shulz and Brad Delp.

@ It is one of six songs (five of which eventually appeared on the Boston album) that he worked on in his basement from 1968 to 1975, before Boston got its record contract. The drum parts were originally developed by Jim Masdea, although Sib Hashian played the drums on the official release. More Than a Feeling - Wikipedia
