Ace combat is a series that honestly has no business being as good as it is. There is no justifiable reason why a game series about jet plane combat should have a consistent set of amazing soundtracks; great stories, that are also told beautifully well; and a lore to rival some of the most famous video game series of all time. It is a testament to how great something can be when you give your heart and soul into making a piece of art, even when it doesn’t need to be. I absolutely love it and am so happy to see people giving it some more appreciation that it deserves!

@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 yeah, I’ve played them all too. The point I was making was more so that, for a plane combat game, Namco Bandai wasn’t reinventing the wheel with the concept, and they could’ve just phoned in everything, made a quick buck, and moved on. Sorry for the run-on there. But they cared so much that they made it like a company would make a masterpiece like a Halo or an Elder Scrolls. Great music, great gameplay, great story, great lore, and a love for the community. And Ace Combat 5 is the best, I will die on this hill!

Ace Combat does this very special thing, where it mythologizes the player and their exploits throughout the games. In the case of this track in particular the player's journey parallels the tale being sung, so this combined with the radio chatter during the mission that references you as a living legend can lead to a very emotional experience only found in games. Keiki Kobayashi and the rest of Project Aces are truly masters of their craft.

That's the best way to put it, so thanks for posting because I now know how to express this better. Ace Combat 4 did it best IMHO, with the letters written by a guy who was a kid during the war, and knew your greatest enemy personally. The letters are heartfelt and personal, but the reason they're written and WHY they talk about Yellow 13 is what moved me the most. Because that man, looking back on those times, realized that you the player might feel _guilt_ for shooting Yellow 13 down. You, the legendary one man air squadron who killed so many people during that terrible war, with so much blood on your hands, deserve to know he wouldn't want you to feel guilty about it. The very nature of both Mobius 1 and Yellow 13 not having names, being these mythic archetypes, plays into that mythology of the events theme perfectly. In the world of Strangereal, ace pilots like the two of them are more myth then person. (Same goes for Razgriz squadron and three strikes, it shows up again and again just as the monomyth does.) The structure of that letter, which you can watch/read as a single coherent piece that works perfectly on it's own, gave us the view from the ground. Not from some random person, but someone with personal investment in the conflict. I can only hope that when I'm approaching the end of my life, I can find the courage to think of the pain of those who harmed my loved ones and forgive them. That's a saintly forgiveness too rare on Earth.

for context: by the time this song kicks in, it's basically a victory parade with a final objective thrown in for good measure. The song itself is also a time limit to finishing that final objective so you ironically fail the mission if you let the song finish. It's always fun to land that final shot on the very last second the song finishes. It just makes the final moments of the story so much more satisfying.

here's a bit: Ace Combat below the 4th is kinda unknown. It has their fanbase, but things started blossoming *hard* with AC:4 Shattered Skies. Both AC:5 Unsung War and AC:Zero The Belkan War are the main ones, and they should be played back to back as Zero is a prologue to 5. Assault Horizon is... not cannon. Can be interesting, but it's not really an AC game. AC:6 Fires of Liberation is also good (Liberation of Gracemaria is a good sound piece), but things got reeeaally nice on AC:7 Skies Unknown. Story wise is eh, but gameplay and soundtrack... yeah.. Also, all of the above, for the exception of Assault Horizon happen in an alternate reality earth called "Strangereal". Do check out about it.

To contextualize this song: It is 6AM on New Year's Eve. You are exhausted from having just fought a major battle last night - at one point literally flying your high-performance combat jet through a tunnel approximately two-and-a-half wingspans wide, with enemy fighters behind and before you. You thought you had finished this war, but word comes down to you: a massive orbital railgun installation - armed with a live nuclear warhead - has been intentionally deorbited as one final, desperate maneuver by the enemy. Its trajectory puts it smack-dab in the heart of the nation's capital - a large and bustling metropolis. You and your three wingmates are the nation's last, best hope at saving untold millions of lives and preventing nuclear tragedy. You kick the tires and light the fires of your afterburners and rocket into the sky from a highway overpass, because there's just no way to get to the descending doom in time from anywhere else. Things are tense. A timer appears on your HUD. Five minutes and ten seconds, ticking down 'til the satellite will be within range of your weapons. You're flying high in the sky, pushing the max ceiling of your airframe. And then your scopes light up. You hear a voice over the radio, and it isn't friendly. The last remnants of the enemy, men who know what they're doing, stand in your way. Eight aces all told, by hatred driven; twice your number but not half as noble. The timer on your HUD reads three minutes. Ticking down. The battle is pitched. It is hard-fought. But you and your wingmates, you've never fought like this before. Never fought this hard, this well. And the enemy, they're not as blooded as you are. They haven't fought this war that you have, the way that you have. When they killed you last, you were first betrayed and then disarmed. This time, you've got your bow and blades and flame. The enemy falls like grass to scythe, screaming their hate all the way down. The timer ticks down to zero. Oka Nieba - "Sky Eye", in your language - the AWACS watching the sky for you, tells you that the satellite has descended to range. You see it, finally. It is, truthfully, *enormous*. It dwarfs even aircraft carriers, and you've destroyed several of those. And then you hear the hum of strings tensed. The low build of horns, the prophetic words spoken - "CUM HISTORIA "RAZGRIZ REVELAT IPSUM "PRIMUM DAEMON SCELESTUS EST." You sweep your jet behind the falling star, the thrum of this song layered underneath the steady tone of a missile lock on the structure of the satellite. The song plays on as you complement its rising tempo with the whoosh and hiss of missile launches and the buzzing roar of machine gun fire; the satellite responds in echoing kind as it falls apart in the sky, solar panels whipping back at you and pelting your jet with the tinkling of debris. You jink, dive, rise to dodge the deadly remains, all the while unloading your arsenal at this last, terrible construction as The Unsung War hits crescendo after crescendo in your ears. And then finally, it is done. The star is shattered. High above the city, on a quiet New Year's Eve morning, it bursts into light and nothing. "When history witnesses a great change, Razgriz reveals itself..." You are Razgriz: black-sheathed demon, once slain by a holy sword, only to rise from the icy depths of despair; now a hero, a Blaze in majestic light.

sir, idk if someone explained the lore behind this song, the demons/heroes of razgriz are one demon on mythology that barrens the land and dissapears on a long time, thats why revelat ipsum (the story of razgriz reveals itself) returning this time as a hero, contextually you guide a squad of aces of a country that turns against it because of top ranking shady stuff during a war, before that your squad is called demon by the enemy forces because you only wipe enemy territory during ops, after your presumed death (you fake how your planes presumedly get shut down) and you operate under an undercover squad that attacks the origin of the war itself thats a shady corp doing stuff to keep the war going, then you save both presidents and end the war on the mission before, this song turns to be one of the last ones of the game, because civilians doubt until the mission before the mission this music belongs, its a last suicide mission to shoot down a satellite charged with some kinda nuke (im potenzia) under a capital of a first world country, and facing the last enemy squad just before taking off a random road in the middle of said capital its indeed a whole story in like 8 minutes. so damm well putted out nothing like Keikis music, he worked on FFVII:Remake osts, Street Fighter V, Smash Bros for wii U/3DS, Tekken 6 and a lot more, totally a legend.

The story of Razgriz, to my vague memory, is the story of a ravenous demon that comes in two forms: First as a bringer of death, laying waste to the land and people until it dies. After its death, it eventually returns in a new state, one as a hero and bringer of justice where it rights the wrongs that have been done. Razgriz is sorta a person, sorta not. Its both a legend in universe, and it is also representative of the player, their squadmates, and their own journey. First the players are pawns raining hell down on the forces of Yuktobania, which is discount Russia, until its been made clear after an assassination attempt on the player and their squadmates that both nations are being pitted against eachother by an older foe long thought gone that has, over the years, infiltrated both with intention to bring them to complete ruin in an attempt at vengeance. With this plot twist in mind, the characters set out under the moniker of Razgriz (Formerly as Wardog squadron) to bring them to justice and in the process, pull both nations back from the brink. Honestly you should just straight up play the games at this point lol. There are many more tracks you've probably not heard that you'd love and are even better with the context that playing gives you. Sidenote: Zero has references, as you no doubt heard, to this very song as Zero takes place during the war mentioned at the start of Ace Combat 5, from which all the plot really originates.

That is thr beauty of Ace Combat and its music. There's never any dull soundtrack. It's all very enjoyable and unique. Every pilot and game has its own unique theme that plays and it's never a let down. My personal favorite is The Liberation of Gracemaria from Ace Combat 6. Its the main theme of the Angel of Emmeria. Also known as Garuda 1, Talisman. I've never had a soundtrack or song that has made me feel so free and alive. Defiantly recommend even though it has no choir or vocals in it. Straight 10/10.

I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately and I want to create a DND campaign based on the lyrics! It’s so good! “When history witnesses a great change Razgriz reveals itself-first, as a dark demon. As a demon, it uses its power to rain death upon the land, and then it dies. However, after a period of slumber, Razgriz returns- This time, as a great hero.”

Dnd campaign could be built up with the party starting off fairly strong, but have them betrayed and loose almost everything in need to build themselfs back up, the first part would have them performing missions that seem routine but during the betrayal the party can learn the completed quests were only helping the BBG (who can also be the one the part is betrayed by, or who the betrayer is working for). During the redemption part of the story the party can be freelance working against the BBG or work with another faction, but due to the deeds they performed in the first part they are viewed with distrust and need to earn it back. Start with the party around level 10 and during the betrayal they have their gear and weapons taken and level magically reset (honebrew curse or magic thats only feasably useful on captured or detained subjects) so the begining of the redemption is the party breaking out of prison and escaping the country.

Ace Combat 5 was an incredible emotional journey. Every song hits the mark it needs to and NEVER fails. '15 Years Ago' and 'The Journey Begins', while not not huge opera songs like this, hit like fright trains when and how they need. Side Note: I cried at the end when the pilots all started singing together. Some are off key, off timed, can't hold a note, while all coming through their scratchy helmet coms all together was such a treat and a staple moment in the franchise.

I think one of the reasons Ace Combat 5 is so particularly special is because of all the Ace Combat games it most effectively leans into its alternate reality setting of Strangereal as a world of mythic storytelling: Our heroes start as inexperienced young novices in the "peaceful remote village" of Sand Island airbase under the mentorship of a grizzled old warrior, until it's all taken away by a sudden attack from a faraway nation and they have to set out on their own big adventure. Their uncertainty and inexperience seamlessly transition into confidence and skill as they survive and then excel until their legend starts to grow on both sides, they slay a pair of terrible "sea serpents" (the mega-subs Scinfaxi & Hrimfaxi-The captain of the latter first claiming the mantle of the Razgriz legend and passing it on to our heroes on his defeat), make a terrible sacrifice as they symbolically die and are reborn (by flying helpless training planes out through a cave in the earth, no less!), rescue the deposed "good king" from the _literal dungeon of an ancient casle_ in a cursed, forbidden land, slay a fallen guardian "dragon" (the giant spaceplane Arkbird), and finally fight a "god" summoned by a sinister secret cult in the form of the colossal SOLG orbital nuclear railgun platform descending from the heavens to smite humanity-All while _fulfilling an ancient mystical prophecy._ What else could the music for that final battle be but this? It's no coincidence the story so frequently references fairytales, with characters named "Grimm" and "Huckebein," and a vital aircraft with the callsign "Mother Goose One," to say nothing of Nagase's treasured storybook and its originating myth of Razgriz itself, that the squadron only realizes toward the end that they had been all along. Of course it's not the only one to use this sensibility-AC0 is proudly based on Arthurian legend and AC7 has an actual goddamn princess as a major character (together with a "tower to heaven" and a "wizard" who's brought to life a dark simulacrum of a deposed warrior prince), and all of them portray fighter aircraft combat in terms of martial arts (which it genuinely is IRL, but most people outside of old A6M Zero aces don't make that connection), but I think AC5 pulls of this juxtaposition of real-world military hardware and high-fantasy mythic storytelling most elegantly and effectively. Absolute treasure of a game-One of those few gems that left me saddened for hours afterward just because it was over.

To be expected after you reacted to Zero & Megalith -Agnus Dei-!! I just love your reactions, from a poker face in Zero to sheer joy in hearing this masterpiece. I'm telling you, Ace Combat has such kickass OST. The Razgriz is a legendary figure within the Ace Combat universe; I won't go any farther than that. Since you're reacting to "final" songs from Ace Combat games, you should react to "Blue Skies (Infinity Remix)", the final song in Ace Comat Infinity. I believe it's one of the best songs the franchise has to offer, and I think it's up there with Zero, Megalith -Agnus Dei-, and this song, easily. "Blue Skies (Infinity Remix)" could've been the last song in the Ace Combat franchise... I'm relieved, even now, that it wasn't.

Its funny that you mentioned it sounds like a folk song, because the lyrics literally translate to this story you are told throughout the game that you and your squad actually follow. Your squad becomes the Razgriz. Lyrics Translation: When history witnesses a great change Razgriz reveals itself-first, as a dark demon. As a demon, it uses its power to rain death upon the land, and then it dies. However, after a period of slumber, Razgriz returns- This time, as a great hero.

I was waiting for this, it's great to see you feel the emotion on the piece. I won't repeat the lyrics here because there's a lot of it already. But a little bit of improved context. The tale of Razgriz is a child's tale on this game's world. But you as the player and your squadron end up embodying this character's story arc with your own. This is a track about redemption, about Razgriz, once an icon of violence and death, becomes a hero and savior. Minor spoiler: As such, this plays when you finally clear your squad's name and literally become heroes by saving countless lives. Chills every time, man. Chills every. Single. Time.

You said it perfectly. It is the hero’s journey but in song. This song plays during the final mission of the story. It reflects everything from the games in game folk lore of the Razgriz. ***incredibly vague spoilers*** Another thing to build upon what others have said: imagine how you're feeling saving the capital city of your nation to this song; then, *a year and a half later,* you're dogfighting with an aircraft that can only be hit from the front (it's been called "aerial jousting"), nuclear war hanging in the balance, and the part of "Zero" that hits during your react video at 3:35 comes through the speakers. Take how you feel about this song, and add *nostalgia* to it. I feel like your jaw would have hit the floor even harder if you did this first, then 6 months later you got around to "Zero". "Zero" is probably Keiki Kobayashi's magnum opus (though, the soundtrack to 7 shows he still has it 13 years since "Zero", and 18 years since "Megalith - Agnus Dei"), so it was a proper and strong introduction to Ace Combat music. Your reactions have been incredibly infectious. I was expecting you to unfold the entire story in this one track again but watching you get blown away far exceeded what I was hoping for, you ascended to heaven my man hahaha. Getting choked up and misty eye to this track is definitely common. Ive heard it a million times in the 17.5 years since the game released and it still gets a rise out of me. Now if you want to UGLY cry, the end credits version of The Journey Home from AC5 will hit hard. Its frame work is based on the unsung war, but when one of your wingmen gets killed, its played slowed down on a single piano while you hear the rest of your squadron trying to keep it together over the radio. It'll tear you up. Then the version in the end credits is a full orchestra and beautiful lyrics that is sung through the game, it feels like literal peace embodied in music. Its this perfect release after a final mission stopping a satellite armed to the teeth with nuclear warheads. As others keep saying, Daredevil from AC7 man... But to add on the hype, they delayed the game for it to be finished and have the mission progression match up with the song. Also Sol Squadron, it is the same as archange, but add an "outlaw" sounding guitar that plays against the towering orchestra and choir the entire time that IMO, represents the main character fighting an ace squadron lead by a legendary ace pilot thats been terrorizing your forces since the beginning.

I can see many others have said this - but I have to reiterate. The Ace Combat series has incredible music, and it's as they say "Better than it has any right to be." It's an arcade action game where planes have 98 missiles and go up against ridiculous superweapons, combined with overly dramatic political themes about war and nations. And the music is INCREDIBLE. I listen to it when I walk, jog, and workout. I listen to it when I relax in a dark room. It has tracks for literally everything. People have been sharing with you the epic end piece themes of the games - but the interim mission tracks are great as well. And I'm so, so soooo thrilled someone like you from your background finally got to experience this. And the themes are so good. This game, happens after AC:Z the Belkan war - which had the track zero you reacted to. You've now listened to the final end piece songs from what's considered the best "trilogy" of the AC games. 4, 5, and zero. So glad you experienced them!

if you want to know just how this track has affected the Ace Combat community, look up the crowd reaction to the first Ace Combat 7 teaser trailer. All it took was four notes to make it clear that not only was it a trailer for Ace Combat, but for an proper entry into the main universe. after Assault Horizon and Infinity, both spinoffs that had little to do with the original setting, and the last numbered entry being a technical achievement with poor writing, a callback to the Unsung War's melody was enough to get people hyped for a proper sequel.

It's such a joy watching you react to music. Your enjoyment and enthusiasm for the art is clearly visible and how passionate you sound when you explain stuff you experienced yourself during your time as opera singer. It's simply delightful. I'd highly recommend "Archange" from AC7 if you haven't heard it already

If you've been enjoying Ace Combat music so far, I highly recommend you listen to either "Alicorn" or "The Hero of Comberth Harbor", both from Ace Combat 7. They are 2 of my favorite songs, not just from that game, but from most games in general.

I'm going to add to this and say that you might want to listen to "Awakening", "Alicorn", and "Hero of Comberth Harbor" in that order and treat them as movements in one long piece instead of as separate pieces as they build up an overarching story when taken together.

@@MarcoMeatball ok…so I’ve thought about this. I am against the idea of spring boarding off of your platform but I’m honored that a you would like to hear it. Personally I don’t think anything I’ve written matches the caliber you cover. I have stuff on Spotify and iTunes music. So if you want to know I can post a link but I would prefer it if you deleted the post as soon as you get it. My name is on them and you know…internet and all. Let me know. I can post it with two pieces I would prefer (since they were later works, the early stuff is very meditative and one sounds way to much like New World Symphony Movement 4 and I’d rather not be embarrassed.)

Nice, I'm glad you looked at this piece. Spoilers for AC5 incoming. To give some context to this piece, I'll begin with the legend of the Razgriz. The Razgriz is a mythical demon that personifies a cycle of destruction and rebirth, which is a common recurring theme in Ace Combat. Compare this theme of destruction and rebirth with the ending of Zero, wherein your former wingman is trying to use nuclear weapons to do very much the same. It's not a coincidence that the musical structure of "The Unsung War" is laid underneath the more bombastic flamenco that plays in the last fight. In AC5, the player character (and their squadron) parallel the myth of the Razgriz. To begin with, the war you fight in AC5 is itself instigated by a series of false flag deceptions orchestrated by the Belkans, who saw the dissolution of their country 15 years ago during the events of Zero. The two main powers of the war were the Oseans and the Yuktobanians. It is a war designed to bring these two powers into a conflict that will devastate them both. The Osean president even goes missing for a time. Your role here, then, is as a force of destruction, unwittingly wielded by a shadowy organization of disgruntled Belkans, known as the "Grey Men". At one point in the war, the enemy begins to liken your squadron to the Razgriz due to how effectively you rain death onto a submarine which is stationed in the same geographic region as the mythological Razgriz. As the war progresses, you uncover more of the conspiracy which leads to your squadron being set up and persecuted for imagined treason. You are pursued and shot down. You're then picked up by forces loyal to the president that aren't interested in prosecuting the war and the conspiracy is made clear. You then adopt a new name: "The Ghosts of Razgriz." This time you come back as the great hero to put down the elements of government and military-industrial complex that are participants in both the conspiracy and war. The story culminates over the ocean off the coast of the capital city. The Grey Men have elected to crash an orbital nuclear superweapon (the SOLG) into the capital city in a final desperate bid to see their revenge completed. You are tasked with destroying it as it re-enters the atmosphere before it can destroy the city. After a brief air battle with the last remnants of the Grey Men, you reach the re-entry point of the SOLG. It is at this point when titular song begins to play. It is the last hurdle after a relatively short, but exhaustive war that has seen the deaths many. To tie it into your own analysis, the tension that's sustained by the strings and that the voices are looking to release matches what you otherwise feel at the moment: the human side of your enemy is defeated, but you still have more work to do, because if you fail to destroy the SOLG then none of it will matter anyway. Destroying the SOLG makes you as the player the agent in releasing that tension. And you feel much in the same way as in your video. Edit: It just occurred to me that the mission itself is an inversion of the Razgriz myth wherein your great act of heroism is to stop death from raining upon the land.
