I'm almost 6 years clean from heroin! There's only 3 end results for an addict - incarceration, death, or recovery! This is for those watching who may be struggling tonight with addiction! You CAN do it! You absolutely DESERVE to live a life unchained! If you fall, as many of us do many times, as long as you're breathing it's not too late! Just pick your ass back up and hustle for your recovery the same way you'd hustle to get that fix!

Ronnie wrote this song after Gary Rossington totaled out Gary’s brand new car while drunk and stung out on drugs just days before they was supposed to start out on tour it made Ronnie mad and he wrote this song to show Gary how stupid he was and wanted him to get clean.

Seems to happen with bands. Same thing happend with The Band, Rick, Richard and Levon doing heroin, Robbie trying to keep it all together. Rick had a near fatal accident broke his neck and back, left him in pain for rest of his life, but got hooked on heroin because of the pain. Although I believe he did heroin before his accident, but probably was major reason he continued to use it. Too bad, such a talent.@@BST-lm4po

Thing I love about lynryd skynrd is that they are one of the most honest bands I’ve ever came across. There’s no gimmicks, no filler, no nonsense or profanity, either….just a group of normal looking guys who can play their butt off with good solid tunes. There’s nothing to sell, the musicianship speaks for itself

The Needle and the Spoon and That Smell were both cautionary tales written by Ronnie Van Zant with real life inspirations at their core. In a manner of speaking, both songs were meant to be 70's interventions done Skynyrd style!

Growing up in the 70s, to all this great music, we had no idea just how spoiled we were. These artists, the singers, keyboardists, guitarists and drummers were virtuosos. Very few bands out there now, that write and perform their own music. Back then all your rock bands did, only a few pop stars existed, like Cher and Streisand and they never wrote anything but their name!

Another point here, Gary was the one who wrote the chord progression of the song,so he had to be intimate with it to help Ronnie with the song. And I don't care what people say it takes days and weeks for a lot of songs to be completed to a finished product. Thanks for reading this, brothers and sisters of the Skynyrd Nation. Brother Gary

@@garytrew2766 I think you're mistaken. Allen Collins is credited with writing the song. If Gary would have written the cord progression, he would have been credited as a song writer too, but he's not. It's just Collins & Van Zant.

I see you're a few songs in now on reviewing Skynyrd. I'm glad to see you're liking them and the sounds and messages they were conveying. You refer to them as "every mans band", and that's not necessarily a bad thing. As it were though, Skynyrd is the quintessential Southern Rock Band. They are the mark that all other southern rock bands strive for. And while there are others I'm not sure you've gotten to just yet like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers and The Outlaws, as good as they are (and they are great), they are not as good as Lynyrd Skynyrd. In my never so humble opinion.

I really like how you noticed The Wonkettes on the backing vocals, and that arrangement was just so perfect to feature them here. They always carve out a space in the jigsaw puzzle of the various moving instrument lines and their arrangements to do whatever they want, and here they made sure that you could always hear their vocals as they came in, usually pretty high and on pitch. You can't work your way up to it you just have to nail it. And so there's space for it to breathe in the music, but then also, they slap some nice reverb on it and it's just perfect. The other thing that has always got me about the song is exactly what you said. This song really is a banger and not only is the musicianship good just the whole arrangement and how engaging it is makes you want to move. It certainly makes me want to move. And then the more the lyrics start to sink in, the more you're like what? Laugh. That's a great way to use tension.

Thank you for reacting to Lynyrd Skynyrd. You can't go wrong with anything 'Skynyrd. Please treat yourself and your audience with a reaction to "Call Me The Breeze". Btw, the backup vocalists were Cassie Gaines (who died in the plane crash along with her brother, one of the three guitarists, Steve Gaines, and band leader/lead singer Ronnie Van Zant), JoJo Billingsley and Leslie Hawkins. 😊✌

It's so easy to get lost in the six string brilliance of this song! By far their best example of the chemistry of Gary Rossington,Allen Collins, and Steve Gaines. All 3 amazing soloists!

The messed up part is as a teenager we all loved this song as we was all out partying. We never took the time to really listen to the words. We all thought it was talking about partying and getting messed up. It is but not in a positive way.

Some people carry the aura of death, especially if they're self destructive. To say some has "that smell" is to say one day they'll probably die at their own hand, directly or indirectly.
