Dwayne growing up a white kid in rural Savannah in the 80s, my best friends were black. Many knew of and loved LS even then. Southern Rock is rooted in Black gospel and little churches in map dot towns. I've listened to every form of music imaginable for 40 yrs and no song hits me like this one. Such a poignant story (with a lotta truth behind it) of a bond that knows no color. And this song just exudes true Southern kindness & love. Blessings from St Aug FL my friend.

Been a Skynyrd fan most my life. Saw them live during their heyday back in '76, plus the Rossington Collins band. Just great. Remember, the Confederate flag was displayed on prime time tv back then. For Skynyrd, I believe, it was just them letting the world know where they came from as southern bands, besides the Allman bros, weren't too prevalent back then. After them, the southern rock invasion happened wit the likes of Charlie Daniels, 38 Special, Molly Hatchett and so on.

Today's media is dividing us! I was flipping thru the TV channels and came across some old sitcoms from the 70's like Archie Bunker, the Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, I even saw an advertisement for the Flip Wilson show! And I thought "America was well on its way to mending race relations." Then in the last decade or so, things went down hill,.....by design!

Thank you for this, I was born and raised in Alabama. And in this time we are living in, so many people have got the wrong idea about the South and its people. Lynyrd Skynyrd is practically sacred in the south, just look at their art how it incorporates the Confederate flag, but they wrote and performed a song like the ballad of Curtis Loew. I dont know one southerner that doesn't know every word of that song, and loves it. All this says something about "racism" and what the Confederate flag stands for to the majority of those who fly it. Keep doing your thing man.👍

In the 40s-50s in the rural south, folks would play on their front porch for entertainment, like we watch TV now. The music was passed down from generation to generation. The whole family would play and sing. I picture Ole Curtis as the last of his family and playing on his porch just to pass the time away. The blues on the Dobro spoke to the young man. Curtis wanted to sip on wine and the boy wanted to hear the music. Great reaction.

It seemed like every small town in the pre-television era had a talented, and often influential, performer whose day job (if there was one) was humble. I think of "Curtis" leaning back in his chair, dobro on his lap, on an elevated wooden sidewalk outside of a run-down dive bar, licking a couple of tunes for some change and then ambling inside for a shot. In my youth, back in the '60s, I knew a couple of guys like that in the Ozarks. For a similar Skynyrd song, in mood and message, is "Am I Losing."

You're probably not old enough to remember soda bottles used to be glass and you would have to pay a deposit on the bottle of 5 to 10 cents.Often at that time people( especially in the country) would just toss the empties anywhere.I as a kid would often pick up bottles to sell at the store to buy candy or baseball cards

As someone who grew up in the South in the 70s, this song epitomizes the state of race relations at that time. We all got along famously in those days. We respected our differences and embraced the things we both loved.

Skynyrd only lost 3 people in the crash, but one of them was their most important member. Ronnie Van Zant was a founder, their lead vocalist and main song writer. He was the voice of the band. It was not until 10 years later that his kid brother grew up and took on the vocalist role. He sounds just like his older brother too, so the reunion tour after a decade of nothing new was just incredible. We stood up in our seats as soon as they started playing and never sat down again through the entire concert. It was that incredible. I still have my 1987 ticket stub today.

Artist need support, we need artist. Support comes in many forms. Even if it's just a smile, it can go a long way. I support buskers when ever they're nearby. They add sweetness to my day. I worry about the buskers I've come to know that we have all been isolated and less folks out. Where do the butterflies go when it rains?

I grew up in the rural Deep South in the same time period as they did. We had a black man that picked up our trash that all the kids loved and looked up to. He came out in a big wooden wagon pulled by two mules. Our trash was kept in metal 55 gallon drums. We were amazed at his skill in rolling two drums at once down our gravel driveway and back up full. He also sang for while doing it, and told us funny stories when he had time. At Xmas he gave all the kids a quarter. My mother gave him all of our clothes we'd outgrown. He had a bunch of children. Giving us a quarter was a huge sacrifice for him. I didn't realize it as a child. I don't think he made more twenty dollars a week.

There was a night watchman in Sacramento at a parking garage. If you drove by at say 1:00 in the morning you would roll down your windows and hear the most incredible trumpet being played into that garage. Man-made amplifier !! Just beautiful . OMG ! Finally somebody reacted to this. This was so cool ! Thanks for reacting to this great tune. Not a massive skynyrd fan, but this song is in my top 5. Just a great story with great bluesy jams. When my band-mates and I gather around the firepit there's always liquor and other accessories and inevitably this tune gets played. And 4-10 drunk middle aged fools ( wives are there too sometimes ) are signing this loud af . It's so much fun. First full jam / party since pandemic is next weekend. Guarantee will bust this one out again.

I am so pleased you discovered this song -- my all-time favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd tune! I've played this song over and over. Can't ever get enough. I never thought of Curtis Lowe as a homeless person. I have a scenario all worked out in my head -- I see a older black man, maybe partially crippled, sitting in an old wooden chair with a flattened and faded gingham cushion, on the front porch of a run-down shotgun shack on a dirt road in the rural south, covered with overgrown kudzu vines, and an old, overgrown rose bush half-hidden by weeds. A yellowed, tattered white lace cutain blowing in a light breeze... a lingering remnant of his lost love whose death he still mourns. A skinny, tow-headed young boy rides up on a creaky old bicycle, drops it in the dirt, and climbs up the shaky steps to offer a handful of coins to the older man, with a shy smile... I think it would make a great music video!
