@@whelkpeopleofdoom that's amazing! We grow everything from black berries, strawberries to tomatoes and hot peppers and share them with neighbors. People seem to get really happy to receive them! I try to make sure to get to the older folks in the neighborhood first and a few of their adult kids have tracked me down when I was in the front garden and told me how much it means to their parents. This is so much more valuable to me than money! It's also just nice to know your neighbors, not a lot of people talk to neighbors anymore.

There was this girl on Threads that just posted why she cant legitimize her “home bakery”. In order to get the home inspection for her business, she needed the landlord to approve the operation to be happening on his property. The landlord denied the request and listed some reasons including zoning laws, liability and the insurance policy he pays for… In my state we have laws to protect home cooks that want to sell products but not all states have that so this is not a copy and paste business model.

listen I work in a bakery currently at a large food chain and we technically (legally) have so many OSHA and Health Dept requirements that we (well not me but I've witnessed many of my co-workers breaking them) do not follow. and that's at a licensed and regularly inspected grocery store bakery. I'm not saying that it's impossible for a home baking business to be properly cleaned and maintained but I've worked in a lot of other food service jobs over the years and tbh the violations I've seen would astound you. personally I wouldn't be buying from a random stranger who baked in their home. it's not that I don't believe some people could make it work and do it well but there's just such a high chance of contamination I wouldn't be willing to risk it unless it was like someone I knew personally and trusted.

At that point, I’d rather just risk it and support a local individual and not a national conglomerate. The odds I’ll get food poisoning are probably about the same either way…

@ I’m all for a considered donation. I just feel if someone is taking a hobby and wanting to exploit it for their own “business”, especially to their own neighbors, it becomes icky, and it also influences others to just start charging for something that they are not a professional at… The neighbor I was referring to just posted a hosting event for $40 (a $20 jump). Part of her post stated that sourdough is a complicated process, and we’re all here to learn. If anything, it’s just for a good time. When she stated that it was really difficult for me to see that in her mind with the guidance that she is providing isn’t a guarantee, but she feels that it’s just a good time to be together, I’m sorry that is not worth $40. But I totally get the host tip, I just wish neighborly meet ups were still grounded and genuine, instead of it always being a way to make a dollar, or 40 off of neighbors. lol I have seen the results of those who attended and it looks like there’s a lot of frustration. 🫠 I have found that I do not have the mental capacity to venture into sourdough. Good luck to all on their sourdough journey.

This is such a fair and compassionate video. Very well done. One time for two months I made CBD gummies to help raise money for a nonprofit. The amount of work was CRAZZZYYYYYY. The gummies themselves were pretty simple, as I bought a special gummy maker to do it and had a simple recipe BUT once people heard that's what I was doing, EVERYONE wanted them - and then I got requests for vegan, sugar free, etc and I accommodated everyone and omg, it was SO MUCH WORK. Yes sometimes a hobby just needs to be a hobby!!!

Ive seen a few people with little side hustles like that and most do not report them on their taxes, which screws you for a LOT of insurance claims. For anything, not just the bakery. Car claim, theft, etc. And having worked food service in the past, you have so many costs and so much labor that this isnt worth it unless you already have resources you dont have to pay for (really awesome kitchen, some sort of dependable cash flow, child to "help", somewhere to store bulk flour, etc)

I love the sarcasm and the actual deeper issue that you are addressing. The hustle culture is so sad because many people have no choice but to hustle and many people just think that is what we do as people. Like hustling is exhausting and not normal. Why has society made struggling to survival normal? When can we have thriving as normal? It’s a societal problem where universal healthcare and universal income should be a human right instead of the 1% getting too much wealth.

Hear me out- I can understand how she eventually came to the conclusion that it’d be way easier to put all her knowledge into a PDF instead of probably answering the same 10 questions she gets in her Instagram comments. But wouldn’t fostering a page where it’s common for her to answer everyone’s questions be better for overall engagement? Like yeah I’m sure it gets repetitive answering the same questions every post but at that point she could have copy/paste answers from her damn notes app. Making an unregulated “school” and claiming to be an expert is just insane and takes away from the coolness of starting a micro bakery

And you definetely need to have expensive or at least some special equipment to commercialize this, even on a small scale.

Thinking of the basic setup costs.... like if you were already an enthusiastic hobby baker you might have some to most. But pans and trays, racks, a decent stand and hand mixer, bowls, utensils, cookie cutters, piping supplies for icing etc etc etc. But here in Australia you would also need to have approval/certification for your food safety and hygiene etc. Then the business side you would need an ABN (Australian Business Number) and potentially registering your business name etc. And these would have to be maintained. Being able to sell from a booth on your property would vary from council to council but I would imagine there would be a) a lot of wasted product from people just not buying and b) a lot of spoiled product due to weather conditions. I have seen friends create quite successful celebration cake businesses from home, but that is a made to order service. Which is a much more sustainable approach.

Since this was posted after the holidays, I was able to do something like this. I made cookies for my boyfriend's co workers's holidays. I made SO many cookies at anywhere from a 3x-5x mark-up, and although I love baking, it was so hard to get everything done in time. Luckily I did and while I did earn some money, it just took up so much more time than I would have liked. Would I do it again for them for special occasions? Sure. Would I do it on a regular basis? Absolutely not. It's just not worth trying to think about making money to do something fun like that all the time.

Markie has just posted a video all about this with proof it was *allegedly* a scam! Neighbours said she was *allegedly* running a free bread stand when staying with in-laws to make the content and make it look like it was taken over a long length of time by changing outfits etc She also said it was full time income but by the ‘cupcake laws’ she was adhering to, in her sudden change of regulation, it’s only if you earn less than $12,000 annually. Very interesting video!
