I can't believe the thing was running good with those loose plugs! Glad you found them.

That’s what I’m saying. I’m assuming that the plugs sealed more with the heat of the engine and metal expansion maybe.🤔

I have an '03 V8 4Runner with 159K miles, I changed the plugs several years ago and all were tight. Just two months ago I changed both valve covers and my coils were clean, however, three or four coils had length way cracks like yours. Engine ran fine, I put some super glue in the cracks and reinstalled, no problem, engine runs fine.

As the plugs wear, they start to leak combustion where the ceramic meets the metal base, creating the brownish band at the base of the ceramic. Original spark plugs will have a triangle stamp on the tip of the spark plug.

15:29 Genuine auto parts will have the vehicle manufacturer (this case toyota) name/symbol on them along with the part's manufacturer's name (in this case Denso, but not always). OE parts are the exact same part from the same manufacturing line, but they don't have the vehicle's manufacturer's branding (often shaven off). Since OE parts are not sold through the manufacturer, in this case Toyota, they are often cheaper while being the exact same quality. I would suggest you research the difference between Genuine - OE - OEM - Aftermarket

Threads on the 3rd loose plug looked messed up. Recommend a spark plug thread chaser that inserts into spark plug hole, then expands to match threads on the way out, so any cuttings will exit the cylinder. Add some grease to the thread chaser cutting threads for some extra metal capturing assurance.

Ha i had that arc thru of the 2 rear cylinders on a 92 Rodeo. It used to kill the wires burned and cracked thru the boot. With every set i replaced i had to pack the outside of those 2 boots with clear high heat silicone and they would run for years after that. My plugs were in tight too

I have a 4.7 (2003 sequoia 196k) same issue with the coil packs and have been chasing the “shimmy”. Just am fyi it appears to be a normal occurrence. I’ve replaced spark plugs, coils, fan clutch, motor mounts, timing belt w/ water pump, belts, and more. I’ve exhausted all avenues with the exception of the a/c clutch and power steering pulley.

I have seen this happen on several Toyota models not just the 4Runner. But, a good check up once a year will usually prevent it from causing problems. It is a testament for the the quality of the engines that they run with very old and damaged coils. If I were you I would put a full set of coils and plugs. No point of keeping ancient ones in. Denso makes those plugs and stamp Toyota name on it. If you buy from the dealer it's the same with the Toyota name on, maybe. At this age you will be hard pressed to find new Toyota anything for it, mostly re-manufactured parts. In that case use Denso re-manned parts. I replaced the alternator on my 2009 Camry XLE with one, even the dealer will have the Re-manned ones only.

If you read the package on the spark plug they dont tell you to use torque wrench, but to use the hand tight method and some hockus pocus and I believe that is why us rookies have bad installs. Also no lube on treads if using torque wrench, as it will actually overtorque.

A little advice. Change all the ignition coils to new ones. They tend to create resistance when they get old (200k plus) and lose spark power. I didn't believe it when I heard it from an old honda retired tech, but I tried anyway because it kinda makes sense if you have any knowledge of basic electronic. Well, it was true. I immediately noticed the engine more responsive and pepy. There was no noticeable gas mileage improvement, but I also noticed fewer down shifts on my regular commute hills.

Do they not make the boots separately? Coil innards are probably fine but the boots can be replaced a lot of the times if possible

You'll get it running good. Wish I could say that about my 2000 Camry LE 2.2L. It's still the 02 sensor. I hooked it up put the battery negative cable back on started it up it quit 2 time. The 3rd time I heard bang. It quit the 3rd time. I thought it had damaged the engine. When the engine goes off the rest of the Camry stays on. I'm beginning to think that the O2 sensor has to be programmed into the computer of the Camry. I'm going to find out. I'll get it to run. Now I'm angry enough too.

Something to note, Denso and NGK are the OEM manufactures for Toyota. They'll last as long as the ones from the dealer but wont cost you a line of credit lol

What are the odds that they hit the crush washer and called it quits? Either with bad torque spec or electronic racket and said send it from there. How deformed do the crush washers look?

@AgentLokVokun they are not prohibitively expensive. And like sparkplugs, its worth it to replace all 4. Plus if you are getting it done, cost is gonna be same for 1 or all.
@AgentLokVokun
@AgentLokVokun 5 ай бұрын
@@asadb1990 The joke is he _can_ afford it. Not replacing them all is just silly stuff. Epically if the ones in the less accessible places aren't done first. But some can argue the "while you're in there" list can just eat you alive -- so being $ mindful is super important. I **WOULD** personally argue that picking Iridium spark plugs over vs Ruthenium _is in fact a bad idea_. Put another way Shoulda gone with ruthenium -- it's not gonna be done again unless it's a video because F that noise.
@AgentLokVokun
@AgentLokVokun 5 ай бұрын
@@asadb1990 Also it would be *8* total -- so he would have to buy *6* more not *4* (He bought 2). At anywhere from $60 - $80/pop We're talking about a $500+ job with out plugs at the low end of the deal. Throw in another $100+ in plugs and you have a money pit forming right there. Pragmatically? Replace the plugs and coil packs and call it a day -- you have a repair fund yeah? Value wise? Why replace if not broken?

A lot of Toyota engines from the past leak from the valve covers. The weird washer design gets too soft over the years and the covers get loose. The torque spec for the plugs is 13ft lbs but I use the updated torque spec of the newer engines which is 15 and have zero issues on all my engines. That truck looks like the previous owners got their money's worth. I've literally never seen a 4Runner that badly beaten. Then again, I live in California so moat owners out here keep them in crem puff condition.

Didn't the new spec change to 25Nm during the redesign with the turbos? I think that's 18 ft lbs and still on an aluminum head. I would just go that instead since the spark plugs didn't change from iridium.

.... Well I presume you are not an automotive technician.. well just to let you know the ignition coil from denso and the ignition coil from Toyota even though it's made by Denso are not the same and we can prove that with an oscilloscope when Denzel makes a spark plug for themselves they do not have to adhere to the specifications that Toyota gives them.. when they make a spark plug for a Toyota they have to adhere to the Toyota standards.. and we have seen that over and over again using ignition scopes slash oscilloscopes
