❤Dear Comrade Smirnov, apparently we are going to have to demote you back down to IM, because the latest development version of Stockfish, version 16.1 dev-20240820-9fb58328, released last week, reports at depth of 50, that the best move for black is indeed Rxc4, that YOU ruled out! 🤭 - So let's give you a new ELO of 2200 ❤

I believe that I could find a7 in a puzzle; but in a real game scenario I am not so sure. With puzzles, it’s telling you that a great/brilliant move is on the board right now. In an actual game with the clock ticking away it’s much more difficult to find those moves AND to play it at the exact right time. Playing it at the wrong time or in the wrong order blunders the whole game away.

Watching chess they sit there playing out multiple variations of the game in their head. Just break the board down and work your way from most valuable to least valuable, see what it's attacking, what's attacking it, is it pinned, will it be a discovered check, etc etc. These games aren't blitz or bullet where the last 10 seconds devolves into rapid fire blunders. So, watching grandmasters play the answer is just simply: taking your time to think. Granted the more experienced you are, the faster you will... although that's misleading because a lot of grandmasters can sit there running through these checks for 10 minutes, depending. So it's all variable.

Ok I am 1500 online and here's what I got: White is up a piece for a pawn at the moment, therefore any mass exchanges should benefit white. However, the white queen is being attacked by the rook and the black knight could unleash a devastating discovered check. A lackadaisical move like h3 would lose the queen to something like Ne5+. Therefore, to keep our material advantage, we must either save the queen or counterattack. For the first one, Qf1 is the only safe square as Nd2+ can be met with Qg2 and white is probably fine, if a bit passive. Not particularly impressive but hey if we can't get a counterattack going, let's play Qf1. For option 2, we need either checks or attacks on the enemy queen, because everything else will lead to material loss after the black knight unleashes a discovered check. Qxc8, Qxe6, etc. are rather unimpressive and no follow up is there. But how about Ra7, attacking the queen (ensuring any knight discovered check lets us capture their queen)? -Qxa7 loses immediately to Qxc8 and backrank checkmate. -Rxc4 Rxb7 will always lead to a mass exchange of the major pieces. For example, Rc6 Rxb6 Rxb6 Nc4 seems promising for white with a fork on the pawn, and Rxb7 Nxc4 seems good for white, even if d5 comes with tempo black will find it hard to save their knight in the long term because of Kg2. -Other than these moves, Qb8 and Qc6 also keep black in the game as everything else loses a rook or backrank checkmate. -Qc6 Qxc6 Rbxc6 (Rcxc6 allows backrank) Rd7 d5 Kg2 seems pretty good for white, even if the bishop taking can ruin our pawn structure. Black has basically no attack and our dark squared bishop becomes uncontested. At the very least, white has a slight material advantages and pretty active pieces. -Qb8 is the toughest to crack, but suddenly there is no discovered check threat. I considered Qxe6 fxe6 (not taking the queen is absurd) Rxg7+ Kf8 (Kh8 leads to checkmate with Rxg5) Nxe6+ Ke8 and there is surprisingly nothing white can do. So then I looked at Qxc8 Qxc8 Rda1 Rb8 and saw nothing. Then I thought what if we took a different starting point: Rda1 Rxc4 Nxc4 (which attacks the rook) and I think a backrank queen to king pin is unstoppable, winning our material back. Let's see how my calculation holds up

I knew there has to be something better than Qd4 but could not find either of the moves sadly. Rxf7 and Rda1 are crazy moves to consider I feel like, I did not think any of them could be winning for white.

Guilty of the 1600 thought process. Found Ra7 and the correct trade down sequence but didn’t consider Qb8 as the best response. Also feel like if I’d seen Qb8 I may have discarded Ra7 as I’d be uncertain about there being a good follow up and went with Qf1. 1350-1400 rapid, and since I only play 10 minute I would be feeling the pressure to move to not spend too much time in a middle game scenario.
@swiftsword64894 ай бұрын
Same, I saw Ra7 and calculated the most aggressive/forcing options for black (Ne5+, Qxa7, and Rxc4), but the simple Qb8 just didn't even touch my mind. I am actually 1600 though, so I guess I can say it's very accurate. I also really agree with the rapid thing you mentioned, I only found Ra7 because I had unlimited time AND knew it was a puzzle. In a real game, I might've resigned or something lol because obviously I can't spend 15 minutes analyzing all the possibilities, and would've felt it's more important to just not lose on time. Maybe in classical I would've found it, though I've never played a proper, OTB classical game. Really cool stuff though.
@AchievesTV4 ай бұрын
@@swiftsword6489 think it’s definitely findable! It’s having the discipline to consider that “ok, what if they DONT just trade down” as the next step. The grind continues 👍 Also helps to realize that the follow up of Ra1 is a very natural follow up, I believe in us!

I found Ra7 fairly quickly and figured it was the best move, with plans to bring the other rook to a1, but I didn't calculate it out fully. I also considered Rf7 but then I dismissed it because I forgot that my knight was covering the e6 square for a queen invasion, which I think I disregarded because of the pawn on f7, and then I was thinking that the king would be protecting the e7 square anyway, Doh! I think my visualisation skills just need to be a little bit better, because even though I can imagine moves like Rf7 I can't quite see all of the consequences of it in my head. And after thinking a few moves ahead things start to get a bit blurry and I forget that some pieces have moved position or been removed from the board. Especially when I'm looking at those pieces on the board in their original positions..

First puzzle: only mpve I see is Qf1 since knight on f3 is threatening a revealed check which could win the queen. After that, if black tries Nd2 then white can offer a queen trade and the material advantage will hopefully lead to better control
@juicedrop4 ай бұрын
Another amazing exercise. Again I find that I can't fully commit to finding the best moves for the other player, so essentially I am only looking half a move ahead (1600). Also, I thought the Qf1 move looked a bit sketchy after Ne1+ or Nh4+. Q can't block the check so Nd5 is forced. Situation gets very comlicated! And I thought it also deserved a bit of analysis

Thanks for the tip.

Ok, I did find the best move rather quickly but I wasn't sure it was the right one because what I missed was that white is up a minor piece. Queen is at risk with rook and king will be checked if the knight moves and could win queen even without the rook. Only a few safe places for it to go, only e2, or f1. Black at risk of back rank mate but well protected by rook and queen or possibly if queen could be moved to g7. I don't see a good trade off hand so I'll move Q to E2 for now and look toward h7.

I saw my queen is currently under attack. The only available escape squares not currently covered by a black piece are d3, e2, f1. All three of those squares can be attacked by the night (on f3) on it's next move. So any of those would lead to discovered check with my queen under attack. Looking for an option to counter attack I saw Ra7 The potential from that would give me either a backrank checkmate (if black takes my rook) or the opportunity to take back the queen (if black takes mine). I never considered blacks Qb8 I did, however see an alternative move for black that you never mentioned which is Ne5+ Anyhow. I thought this would have been blacks best defence and would leave us about equal (IMHO)

Thank you! This is great video! and nice example of chess puzzle with different ratings.. Just one quick comment.. if a player gets Ra7 like in your video you give the person 1600 rating.. but then if he also finds R*f7 he gets 2600.. lol.. to get to the f7 square you have to first go to a7.. so from that point of view the move does not make any sense.. you can not give the same move 1600 and then 2600.. you can only change a rating if the move is a different square.. Not sure where you read about this puzzle but the author got this mixed up. lol
@secretasianman25314 ай бұрын
the queen is threatened by the rook, but there's no safe place to move where the queen won't be attacked by the knight when the knight moves resulting in a discovered check by the black queen. so you need to move the queen to a place where the queen can then *block* the discovered check and move out of the knight's attack. that square would be f1. so, q-f1 would be my choice.

Yeah, I'm gonna be low ELO for a while :D
@adityaarora34754 ай бұрын
You are probably right for the higher levels, but I think you are really underestimating the levels of sub 1500 players, which is something normal that grandmasters do. Like in most of your videos, you say that the player is 500 if they hung a piece that was under attack(without any tactics involved), but the thing is that even though 500's blunder, they don't blunder every move, rather they blunder every ~7-8 moves, and by blunder I mean hang a piece directly, let the opponent blunder their piece and not capture, not play M1 when they have it, and let the opponent play M1 from a winning position. So what you say is 500 is really what I would consider to be 250-300, where they blunder at least every other move. 500's "blunders" are generally not really blunders(by my definition here and what you said to be 500 elo), in that usually they miss basic tactics(forks, skewers, x-rays, discovered attacks etc), they miss sacrifices, and they often move a piece that is guarding another piece that would then be under attack. So its something that at least makes sense rather than hanging a queen when its very clearly under attack from a rook. I'm 550 and according to this I'm 1200 level because I played Qd3 which didn't hang the queen immediately at least, but put the queen in a position where it could be discovered checked. I doubt a 1200 would play something like that, I think what you described as 1500 is what a real 1200 would play, 1000 is what a real 500 would play, 500 is what a 300 would play etc. I'd also say that there is a difference between someone who played moves like Qd4, Qe4, and people who played Qd3 and Qe2, because while both hang the queen the former just hangs it in one move, wheras seeing the latter takes more intuition of seeing that there are discovered checks available(and this makes a 500-1000 opponent much less likely to capatailize on it). I'd say the former is what a real 500 is like and the latter might be like 700(I think I played like a 700 because I'm a little bad with shorter time increments and play better OTB even though I'm 550). So yeah just keep this in mind in the future. But good position and could explanation of the calculations.

So... I found 1 Ra7! not so much from any rabid counter attacking mentality, but from knowing that when facing a dangerous battery, attacking the Base of the Battery is often useful. And I did find 1.. Qb8, and then giving back some Material with 2 Qe4, leaving 2Ns v R. (I did consider 2 QxR+ QxQ 3 Ra1, the same back rank idea, which I then saw did not work due to Rb8, missing the Famous "Reverse the Move Order", with Ra1 first. Not even in my dreams would I have considered 2 Rxf!.) I am 2039 LiChess Classical, which is > 95.1% of LiChess Classical players, but 605 million earthlings play chess regularly, and their general standard is poor, verging on piss-poor, not LiChess Classical standard at all, so your 95% planetary judgement for 2000 ELO seems light...

Hey GM Igor i managed to find all those lines and the rating range i got was 2600 but the problem is i am still 1528 in standard rating and sometimes with against 1800 to 1900 players but still looses to some 1400 fide rated players in OTB games though i manage to win against high elo fide rated player sin OTB games. Moreover i have even won agaisnt soem titled players with real fide ratings of 2200+ and 2300+ and 2400+ playign them in lichess form in their streams. But the problem is my standard fide rating is still low. Actually idk what is wrong with me. I could spot the moves and calculate correclty still i feel like im lacking something could u pls tell me what I am lacking and pls help me with it.?

I kept trying to complete the puzzle, but so far it just keeps asking me "Are you from India?" and "Do you own more than two sticks to entertain yourself?" So I guess not.

Lol...1800 here with 1800 result from this puzzle. I don't know what is happening? I struggled to cross the 1600 initially but I am crushing it against the 1800. I am way too aggressive and confusing for them apparently.

I saw Ra7 Qb8 but then I lept for Qxe6!?!?!?! fe6 Rg7 Kf8 Ne6+ and it looked good. In a game I would double check, and ultimately delay the deepest calculation until after black’s first response. Canadian, 2000ish.

So I'm 1330 online with 2800+ in puzzles. I found Ra7 and Rda1, but probably wouldn't have found them in a game

If you still make a comeback with 1 pawn and king 👑💀 then you're a genius finishing off entire army of black .....

I don't like chess tests. That's not fun. I like baby steps. For example it seems to me when I grind and analyze 30 blitz games a day for a month then take a week break, when I come back I seem to see more tactics without even trying to find them. I just happy my brain knows what it's doing and I don't need to get involved in how my brain is finding the tactics. Baby steps add up.

1600... but definitely not 1600 hundred... fun puzzle and presentation/entertaining, but I have the consistency of jelly.

Only thing I could find is Rook A7. Unless it’s something else I don’t see, that’s whites best play.
