For the last 15 years, I've been creating artworks using graphite and so I thought I'd talk on a part of the drawing that is often overlooked, the mapping stage. It's a foundational stage of the drawing where you loosely apply graphite to the paper before you put in the details. Let me know in the comments if you spend time in this phase of the drawing or if like me, often you find yourself rushing through it. Hopefully this can help us slow down and pay attention to one of the most important stages of drawing.

Hi Jono, A while ago i saw the "i can't believe how long this took" video, and it inspired me to pick up the pencil again. I believe i read or seen somewhere that you have ADD, like me. (and many other people). The hyperfocus part actually helps me drawing and to get in a flow, but it can work against me as well and then i am all over the place with a drawing and when that happens, i usually end up destroying the drawing because.. well, i erased the paper away.. another mistake i make way to often (and this took me a while to actually figure out wth was happening) is that i work too fast, or press too hard when using softer pencils for pupils or dark shadows, and sometimes even blending.. The drawing starts to reflect light, the paper doesn't pick up graphite anymore, and everything starts to look like a black and white aquarelle painting.. i read alot about this issue and most say i flatten the paper, but some also say i stack too much.. which one is it?

1:57 On these large drawings you normally do, what size do you often use for your grid lines?

I often reach a stage where I know if I overdo it I might make it worse hence I leave it for tomorrow (I've ruined a lot pieces because of this😊)

How do you use the grid method? I understand how if the photo and drawing are the same size but how do you make a large drawing with a small photo and it come out right?

Scale the proportions up. Also, if you have a small photo and want a large drawing, you're going to have to invent a lot of the detail yourself. That's where the "art" comes in...
