Pretty crazy that they spent tens of millions, hundreds of mils or even billions of $ dollars worth into militant activities. All that international aid money, money from Qatar, Iran, whoever, they invested that most or maybe even all of that money into the tunnels, amassing primary weapons and rockets, paying off labor for the tunnels and fighter salaries. Hamas was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood which was implicated in the assassination of president Anwar Sadat after he arrested their leaders They are effectively banned as a political party and Egypt doesn't want a repeat of the past. The same is true for the 'West Bank' Palestinian who are not welcome in Jordan or Lebanon where they started civil wars.

One thing that I have not yet seen addressed, is the cost incurred by the construction of this vast, intricate tunnel system. It must have been astronomical! And the sole purpose? To facilitate the destruction of Israel, and the Jews. It shows again, that to those in charge of handling the finances of Gaza, it matter little to them that the average Palestinian receives little benefit from this side use of the funds entrusted. I am absolutely sure that the money was intended to further improve the plight of the Palestinian people, but way this money was actually used has caused such a huge, and horrible, backlash on the same people. Sad that so many are so willingly blind to the evil that is called Hamas.

The IDF uses them too, but with little success. The tunnels have sealed and reinforced doors (a few of them were recently documented by the IDF), so the terrorists inside just seal off each section behind them. This means that smoke, blasts, and even flooding would usually only affect a relatively small part of the tunnel, up to the nearest sealed door.

Know a gentleman who explained one tactic they used in Vietnam. Propane. They would open the valve and release said Propane into the tunnels which is heavier than air so it would settle to the bottom. Then simply ignite the gas.
