Something i have noticed in photography/painting/drawing, theatre, movies and music lyrics ... that if you straddle that middle space between concrete realism and extreme abstraction you allow the viewer to participate in the art. They will assign their own thoughts and feelings to those open-not-clearly-defined elements (or metaphors) thus constructing a narrative or set of emotions and temporarily merge with the art providing some kind of satisfying (?) experience. Its a theme or idea I think about when I get moved by art.

I had the pleasure of meeting Olga in 2018 for the launch of her book 'Before Winter' and the opening of the associated exhibition at ECAD in London. I had previously been enchanted by her extraordinarily beautiful images and found the person behind the photographs no less engaging (I also remember she'd been let down by her accommodation in London prompting a last-minute change of plan). The books are exceptionally well produced and filled with moodsome, story-telling images that are inspirational for anyone interested in ICM / slow shutter photography... highly recommended. I discovered Olga earlier this year thanks to an interview on another site and was immediately drawn to her style. Motion and abstract imagery are definitely two elements of photography I'm interested in and am exploring in my own work. Trying to remain fresh and original in my own work is really hard, especially as I live in a big city that has been photographed millions of times already.

I recently began working a photography job at a boat tour company, where I take pictures of patrons, edit the photos, and then sell them once the patrons get done with the tour. I did it mainly for the editing experience, because up until now I had just been a hobbyist, figuring out things on my own. Ultimately, though, commercial photography is not what I want to do. I want to make art. I love black & white photography and I think works like Karlovac's is incredible. I would love to make a living doing that but it doesn't feel realistic, which in turn feels really discouraging. I still don't even really know how to "get my name out there" in such a way that anyone would even be interested in looking at my stuff. I think my work could obviously be improved, but it isn't bad. Most of the feedback I've received has been positive, just not so positive that anyone would want to compensate me for it. I've had stuff published, but again it's not paid for and sometimes I've even been the one to pay to have it in a particular magazine, which feels stupid but I don't know what else to do.

That’s correct, Olga’s images and thoughts were very accessible because she has a website and multiple interviews. However I do face problems like that with some photographers which is a shame nevertheless I’ll keep the videos coming and I hope they’re as helpful as they can be 🙏🏻

Another definition of beauty I'm aware of is the subject's conformance to--or perhaps better, reflection of--an ideal. Admittedly, that's still a slippery term, but one that moves the discussion away from the realm of pulchritude. Being able to convey something clearly, even if unpleasant or even shocking, is achieving an ideal. (Thanks as always!)

Tatiana I'm already a close follower of your photographic disposition and views expressed here in has been so rewarding in just two videos I watched! I appreciate the way you presented different aspects of photography which has been a seek for me! I love photography and I'm always learning how to improve technically and in saying technically I mean even the technical aspects from its ringside view of the word, that is to say when it comes to expressive ways one can find his photography satisfy the photographer himself from within his urge to expression! But I want to know if someone finds beauty from a photograph which was created from the pain, or grief, or sadness becomes a failure to them who see beautiful pain, grif or sadness which the photograph didn't mean to be made! Yes one may say BEAUTIFUL with a sigh of sadness after interacting with say, a painful photograph and the photograph would then also be somewhat better merited even if the photographic expression didn't reach out to audience but this person obviously justified in saying BEAUTIFUL and if ever be encountered with expressing his views on it he thought would provoke sadness and the photograph reached some audience to understand the underlying expression of sadness that had been conveyed in the photograph in question! It's the toughest thing to achieve to thump your feeling of goodness and badness in photographs and I'm talking of the technicality which is just not knowing to expose, compose, and time pressing the shutter with precision but much more than than acquiring these and that's why photography is so fathomless to acquire perfection! I love images with blurs not only motion but out of focus images conveying pictures like paintings not always through the glass panels covered with raindrops or greasy substances not even making filters dirty with grease and here's some other avenues of variety of photographs through filters and using materials on theo! Thank you very much for giving me an opportunity to express my view! Wish the next video of yours will bring more exciting topics like this one!

Loved her images and words and your insights. Great stuff. As usual. BTW, love your video's composition & color. (I'm a big fan of complementary color play.) The solid green makes the splashes of red on your too-groovy shirt pop and ever-so highlights your skin tones. Love the balance of the rigid white background 1/3 on the left and the green 2/3 on the right, especially with the green leaves' white subtle fireworks of highlights from the ambient light. The leaves also provide a balance of colorful "still motion" with your shirt's lively red/back dance on the left. All too groovy, indeed. And it still felt very laid back, minimal, energetically Zen, kinda like your usual background and your videos' feeling, style. Actually, the video's color and composition were a perfect complementary foil to the B&W abstract photos. Anyway. Thank you.

I’m really enjoying your videos, I’ve discovered so many new photographers since finding your channel. One question I find myself looking for an answer to fairly often is “who are these photographs for”. I find the creative process rewarding and satisfying however I feel if I was to share my work with others they wouldn’t understand. Is this something you’ve contemplated? Many of the artists you discuss have styles that wouldn’t be particularly appealing online and so I wonder what is the measure of good and how that plays against knowing who the audience should be.

I love Karlovac's work. Of the photographers you mentioned I would say that, to me, her work is indeed beautiful. I find the work of Weegee and Titarenko fascinating, but would not call it beautiful. This is very subjective though.

Another fascinating mini documentary about a little known street photographer. After looking over Olga Karlovac work, I have to say Karlovac it remains me greatly of German expressionism. Olga Karlovac has unique way of capturing the world at large. The photos at 0:50, 3:11,5:18, 11:30 and 11:37 all remind me of ghostly figures from a nightmare. Looking forward to your next mini documentary.

Interesting watch for sure but as I am older I learned about the power of motion and blur from Ernst Haas, who used colour as well as black & white. As we know he shot many subjects/genres in different ways so I have never got bored with his work. To continually photograph like above would drive me insane, life is full of many photographic opportunities and I think we should take them.. A photographer that is well worth a look is Martin Middlebrook, from conflict work for ARTE TV to his meanderings on the coast of Bretagne. It's not only his photography, it's his writing as well.

Came across Karlovak's work after seeing another KZbinr do a breakdown of her technique and it was immediately affecting. I love Impressionism and you can almost feel the direct line from those working in paint to Karlovk working with photography (the street scenes especially). I know colour was a big thing for impressionists but the speed, immediacy, the desperation to capture a fleeting feeling in the moment is all there. Love it.

There are standards of Beauty coming down from the Socratics, through the medieval and romanticism, modernity and finally 20th century. Your subjective understanding of beauty derives from postmodernism which is, nowadays, easily debunked by rejecting structuralism, Derrida / Baudrillard and the New York art elite of the 60s and 70s. Bakhtin' scholars did that and Steve Edwards remarkable reply to postmodernism proves that we can live our lives without distorting the concept of beauty or subjectivity, like many of us, here in the West, do. Subjectivity is problematic in the hands of the soviet, chaotic in the hands of western self proclaimed prophets of truth, like those artists in New York that rejected elitism and then acted like one. In your case, beauty is confused with goodness. Hence the importance of Kant. However I admit, you are a hell of a photographer :)

Interesting comment, loved your breakdown and how you structured it. To be honest although I read a lot, I think of beauty as subjective because it presents a similar problem as to quantifying a feeling, it’s different for every individual. But I do agree that there’s definitely different concepts of beauty and the receptiveness to its potential subjectivity does change from East to West. Thanks for watching and definitely more coming!
