This Tank Makes You THINK - Leopard 2AV

The Leopard 2AV in War Thunder is the top tier reward for Summer Quest. While it's a good tank, it's most certainly pretty unremarkable. For comparison, it's kind of like adding Sherman 76mm as an event tank but with a 75mm instead.
The Leopard 2AV has an L7 105mm cannon as opposed to the 120mm! For what is basically a budget cut Leopard 2A4 from Wish it only sits slightly below at battle rating 9.7!
While you can technically get the Leopard 2AV for "free", it honestly doesn't feel like a reward. More of a tech tree vehicle that's just here as filler.
I'm a bit disappointed but at least we didn't get something completely overpowered! :)

Hey Odd, I had an idea for a vid you could do, Its kinda mean but its pretty fun, Its ground RB, With Germany. The Tanks are as followed: German Sherman, German Churchill, German KV-1b, German KV-2, and the German T-34. An aircraft you could use could be the German P-47. Sadly I was too late on the second turn because I spawned inside another leopard. It took 2 other Leopard's to get us apart. However if you go to his discord you can see the announcement of the video and I am actually on the left in the thumbnail (STRV 122B PLSS) and on the first try I was allowed to go first. But the 2nd try was fun aswell.

It's laziness, not "running out of ideas". There are plenty of fun and interesting vehicles not in the game yet. I think it's just Gaijin has access to "reliable" sources of info on Leopard 1 and many other well documented historical tanks, so they put them all in.

@@julianh9347 I agree! The Strv situation is just sad; it's such an exciting vehicle. It will be sick if it's working correctly. The same thing with Artillery vehicles, the Bkan for example, are super cool tech from their era. They are really poorly suited for direct-fire roles. That and all the Multiple Rocket Launcher Systems. I know Gaijin is uncomfortable giving the player accurate arty, as that would cause a significant shift in their game dynamics, but I wish they give at least some way for Arty to function as intended.

Nah. They'll always figure something out. In 2032 we'll still be talking about decompression while grinding the new Harkonnen tech tree because crossovers are now a thing and instead of a Nuke you summon Mecha Godzilla. People on reddit will then complain about historical accuracy because lore says he never appeared on the Maginot Line and one of the rivets on his left foot is slightly out of proportion. Germany still apparently suffers, Russia remains "op" and USA got another 14 Shermans.

It would probably be too powerful against many vehicles (thinking of opened top things especially) and... basically too much for what would be a few, if not just the croc, flamethrower vehicles. Then there's the trailer to faff with. The AVRE though? Hell yes, that would absolutely work. There's also the concept italy vehicles, some german stuff ofc, more americans (again, the shermans!). Could even do 'wacky' stuff like the australian universal carrier with a 2pdr.

So the 2AV is interesting from a historical standpoint: This vehicle was developed and submitted as a prototype to compete against the XM1 Abrams tanks (remember that the first models of the Abrams used the 105mm M68 main gun instead of the later 120mm M256). The Germans passed over this themselves, as they felt that the 105mm gun was obsolescent against the latest generation of Soviet tanks (T-72As and T-80Bs, which premiered in 1978-'79) and insisted upon the 120mm Rh-120 to be mounted into models that they would accept into service. Unfortunately, while it's interesting in that historical context, it simply comes too late for significance gameplay-wise (considering that it faces designs that came well after it, like T-72AV TURMS!), and cramming it in as a limited availability event vehicle means it will be extremely rare once the event is a few months past... Had it been a tech tree vehicle from a couple years ago when late '70s vehicles were the top tier in tanks it might have stood a chance at relevancy...

I think the Leo 2AV will get its BR reduced eventually to something like 9.0 or 9.3, which would put it more in the weight class where it belongs alongside XM-1s, early Merkavas, T-64s and the very last of the Leo 1s.

@@cqpp Japan has plenty of extremely interesting vehicles to add, from wheeled 40mm CTA gun platforms, chaffee's with ATGM's strapped to the turret, Toyota's with L-MAT's all the way to a 105mm unmanned light tank prototype (similar to the AGS). As for France, I mean, there are hundreds of vehicles that could be added. Shafting Japan is semi-understandable, but France, nah. No reason it should be missing IFV's / APC's at this stage. Btw, curious as to why you believe "minor nation's should not be getting event vehicles"? Is there something wrong with other nations being able to create fully functional lineups?

I’m sorry OddBawz I have to disagree with you. I do not agree with the fact that the Leo 2AV and the 2A4 are bad vehicles for their br’s. Everyone thinks armour, thermals and ammo runs this game but in fact mobility has always given players the upper had for years in war Thunder. Getting into spots minutes before your enemy is a way better advantage than any vehicle with thermals, armour and top rounds. This is why top tier rounds were never needed. Players are just to lazy to learn weak spots, angles of other vehicles from other nations and good positioning. Love the videos and keep up the good content.👍🏻

I miss the days when skill actually mattered. To learn weak spots of enemies, to our position them. The game has honestly gone more backwards than forwards. Making the game idiot proof. Same applies to aircraft. Does not matter who has the better dog fighting skills it’s all about who has the better premium or aircraft with the better missile. With tanks it’s all about mobility and OP ammunition. Just saying man. I’ve been around the game for a long time, spades and grinded out 90% of each nation’s vehicles and aircraft with the struggle of no GE because it’s not fun that way. Sorry about the rant mate. Thats rights. Also mobiltity is a very important attribute of a vehicle. The Leo got a decent 105 cannon with good mobility and a decent armoured turret on a 9.7 br. Put it down to 9.3 and it will be a great vehicle to play with a strong line up around it!

I personally feel this (admittedly boring) Leopard is the perfect style of entry for an event reward. It doesn't break the meta, and it has historical significance behind it, they likely just need to lower the BR to 9.3. (The 2AV PT20 seen in WT was the 105 L7 equipped prototype developed to be evaluated in the US against the XM-1)

Honestly, it may be the fact that pretty much every German tank has had the same name since the Leopard I. I wouldn't think too much of if since Soviet/Russian tanks are pretty much just derivatives of the same series of tanks for the last 50+ years, just adding slightly different guns or reactive armor. The USA has been using the M1 series since the early 80's(when fully fielded). Israelis have used some version of the Merkava. Chinese and India just use varied Russian derivatives with German style spaced armor(for a more modern look) and Russian derivative ERA. France made their own tanks that have been too expensive to replace. British have been using the Challenger name forever as well. I think its the fact that 3rd gen MBTs are near the pinnacle of what you can do with a logistically sound, big gunned, tracked, armored box. Beyond electronic/sight upgrades, new engines/electric motors, some wonder metal for armor and projectile upgrades you pretty much just use the same frame with the upgraded components. Bigger tanks could incorporate a lot more, but they would be severely limited in their theatre of operation and the nations that would buy them. Its more like the world ran out of new tank upgrades and not the game.

tbh you get to that BR and go a way you could possibly get sniped at because there are like 50 maps with like 5 varients of each map, you get lucky to play the same map of the same variant out of 100 games and if you mainly focus on one or two countries then you would have problems on lots of maps. Still running into maps that i've seen only a handful of times while playing.

I feel like they couldve made this leo interesting despite its shortcomings if it had scouting, wouldnt be broken as it doesnt have thermals, but it balances out the bad. or maybe just drop it to 9.3, it is basically just a german xm-1 anyways.

The only reason the XM-1 is probably still at 9.3 is because of the terribly performing M735, if it ever got M774 I could actually see Gaijin putting it at 9.7, so remove DM33 from the 2AV and maybe you can justify it being 9.3, but even then its armour is basically 2A4/M1 Abrams level so its quite well protected against a decent amount of vehicles at around 9.3 so maybe not, which is why Gaijin gave it DM33 (which "historically" it never used) and put it at 9.7.

The tank has worse armor than the XM1 as mind you, the XM1 has 650mm of chemical protection on both the hull the the turret, the leopard 2AV only has the same protection on the turret, but it's hull is absolute butter that 105mm hearts can easily pen it. XM1 also has access to thermals (Leo 2AV doesn't), has better mobility (29hp/t vs 27hp/t), and can carry much more ammo in it's blow out panels (30-35 rounds vs 12 rounds). The only advantages the Leo 2AV has is slightly better kinetic protection in the turret and a better shell. In it's current state it's absolutely a 9.3br tank, heck I would rather play the XM1 than the Leo 2AV anyway.

@@dagreenbolt9169 I hope you realise it is literally impossible for the currently modelled 2AV to have less chemical protection than the XM-1 (the XM-1 has no hull protection by the way so you made that up), the left side of the 2AV (its "weakest" side) has 115mm of RHA and 380mm of NERA (provides chem protection), the XM-1 has 114mm of RHA and 260mm of NERA, which translates to the XM-1 having 580mm of Chem protection, the hull of the XM-1 is actual butter it has no NERA, whilst the 2AV has around 750mm of chem protection on the left side of the turret and 850mm on the right and also has 150mm of NERA in the hull and a fuel tank that eats up HEATFS and some ATGMS, so to clarify the XM-1 doesn't even have 650mm of chem protection it has 580mm, how do I know? the T-55AMD has a 600mm penning ATGM that goes through the turret, that same ATGM won't pen the 2AV, the 2AV has 2A4 levels of chem and KE protection (of course a little worse hence 9.7), which instantly makes it better. So wherever you saw that the 2AV has less than 650mm of chem protection is incorrect and the fact that you are using chemical protection to say that the XM-1 is better makes me question if you have ever played top-tier where tandem, top-down and other whacky ATGMS exist, chem protection at this BR is negligible. Thermals are nice to have (honestly I hardly use gen 1 thermals because you can't tell what's what), regardless, the radkampf, PT-16 and 2K which are all 9.7 and don't have thermals, so terrible point, mobility is also a garbage point, it has the same mobility as the 2A4 and good mobility is probably the only reason the XM-1 is even 9.3 because at this BR it actually has no protection, with one of the worst APFSDS rounds in the game. The 2A4 can carry 15 rounds so you're 3 rounds worse off, oh well, the 2AV doesn't have "slightly" better protection, 105 DM33 can't even pen the 2AVs turret, which means no US round (bar M1128) can pen the 2AVs turret until 10.3, the XM-1 has a worse round than the 105 DM23, and M735 can't even pen the LFP and the UFP is trolly as hell, whereas the XM-1s turret can get penned by 8.0 and 8.3 APDS and APFSDS, the XM-1 has no armour against KE rounds, so overall the 2AV is better in every regard except thermals and is a negligible amount worse in acceleration/manoeuvrability, and yes it is a negligible amount practically every other MBT you face around 9.7 will have a worse or similar hp/t as the 2AV, I mean mate, I don't know if you know this but the T-72 Turms has 18hp/t and no reverse and is still widely considered one of the best tanks at 9.7, also if what your looking for is a glass "cannon" (which the XM-1 isn't because it doesn't have the cannon part) then I don't know why you would use the XM-1 and not the 2K which has 30hp/t or even the Rooikat at 8.7 with DM33, in the end I don't know how you can actually think the 2AV is worse or even on par with the XM-1 because it factually isn't.

It confuses me that the marder has thermals at 7.3 but plenty of Germans at higher BRs don't get them... It's a HUGE disadvantage when you're fighting a large number of vehicles that have that trick up their sleeve. Just odd

to be fair i would play this more like a light tank than an mbt. also in my opinion with what it has to offer it should go down in br but because of br compression it gets screwed it would be incredibly op against 8.3 but it isn’t effective against 10.7 at all.

Khrizantema-S is BR 9.3 and has BMP-2M ish missiles that can point and click any tank from any front and one-shot it, anything but overperforming soviet tanks that is. It also has a ground radar for searching and tracking that ignores smoke and trees. 8775 SL to repair when spaded in RB. That should make you think! Bring a few HE shells when you risk facing something like that, that's my pro-tip, three are good enough when I roll out. Looking forward to making free GJN outta this oddity.

This tank is basically the first M1 Abrams in the American Tech Tree, maybe a little worse in places cause no thermals but a little better in other places because better round. It kinda demonstrates just how much it sucks to play these lower end top tier tanks that can get uptiered into 10.7-11.0 matches

I started questioning my existence after this video. This thing at 9.7 is worse than the ztz96a which has gen 2 thermals, great apfsds, and reactive armor
