The Leopard 1 gets a lot of stick for being a bad tank. Even though it's been moved from 7.7 to 7.3 in the last year, people are really struggling with it.
The Leo has an absolutely outstanding cannon for its BR. It's a 105mm L7 that is capable of firing an APDS round with 300mm of penetration and a very potent HEAT-FS shell that can punch through any tank it'll face.
In today's video, I'll be using the Leo 1 almost stock just to prove how well it can perform while playing aggressively rather than cowering behind the spawn and waiting for enemy engagements at long ranges!
The Leopard 1 is an amazing tank and it's one of War Thunder's most iconic vehicles!

Why the hell would anyone ever think this was a bad tank? It's amazing. To those trying to give me a reason as to why it's bad, hear me out. Armor isn't everything, especially at a BR like 7.3. Try playing the Tiger II in an uptier against APDS and HEAT, your armor is irrelevant at that point and becomes more of a hinderance as it lowers your speed. The meta changes from thicc bois to extremely fast, heavily armed, and lightly armored vehicles. It's a bit of a change in playstyle, which is something you'll have to get used to as the Leopard definitely plays differently from it's predecessors, (The M48 would also apply here). Armor is less effective although not completely useless, and you're relying on your firepower and mobility to dish out the damage. And as for firepower and mobility, you have a lot of it. The thing can get around pretty well even when stock, and the stock APDS round can punch through the front of an IS-3 for goodness sake. Don't play it like a Panther or a Tiger, play it closer to how you'd play the LeKPz M41. If you get hit, chances are you'll die, so be cautious. Use your speed to get to a good spot early on and just unload on the enemy. Brawling at closer ranges is also an option, albeit a riskier one. The vehicle does best at medium to long ranges, especially with the good sights and high pen. Charging in and being able to take several hits and get kills at the same time is no longer a thing with this tank, (and never really was with most vehicles). If you can't adjust, I'd recommend playing another nation, or sticking to lower BRs. About stock grind, I didn't find it that bad but whatever. The suffering isn't exclusive to the Leopard 1, most of the vehicles in the game are quite awful when stock, so I don't see the point of arguing about the stock grind as it applies to so many other vehicles. And all you have to remember if that you're not suffering alone, and that you have a good half or more of the playerbase suffering with you. Yes, there are tanks that do what it does better, yes there are things with better armor, yes there are things that punch harder, and yes, there are things that move better. But it's an MBT, a universal tank, a jack of all king of none kind of tank. It combines the best of all worlds. Usable armor, excellent firepower, and good mobility. Use it correctly, and it'll serve you well.

It is a light tank by playstyle , and the Panther and Tiger 2 players whine when they get frontally shred by autocannons >25 mm . Just flank, take advantehous positions and let this hell of a L7A3 rain on tge enemy team. The Leo 1 went into service in 1965 has a rangefinder, NVD and a hefty magnifier for the scope. The only thing it suffers by is a lack of stabilizer (french suffer btw) , and this isnt even that bad , as everyone but GB and SWE lacks a stabilizer. So they moved down the IS3 and sent the terminator to kill it right with it .NOICE

@@meimyself7134 play it like you are playing COD 4 all ghillied up mission. Bushes and vegetation are your friend, also avoid moving too much when hidding in them. Its more like a light tank. The default round is the best. Sometimes somehow your turret will bounce shots but dont rely on it. If you are seen you are dead. Play calm and collected. When you can, use long range shots because the scope is just god tier and the cannon is very easy to aim. Also last advice is, turn off your engine when you are trying to be sneaky and use the free look to look around. While you have battery the turret will make sound when rotating so avoid rotating it needlessly when enemies are too close. Thats about it really. Its a lot, yes but there are many other tanks where this info is very usefull.

Theoretically, they could use the same calibre penetrator in an APDS in a larger cannon. I.E say a 90mm cannon has a.... 35m projectile, in a 90mm sabot, or a 105mm sabot. It would travel faster, maybe even be slightly longer in build, but still the same diameter projectile, and achieve better performance.

just because you are a good player, and get a decent match, it does not mean the tank is good. You might be good, but the tank is horrible. Poor mobility, poor survivability, poor secondaries, no armor. And these are true for all matches, and all players, good or bad.

@@Serby665 Just because your playing is horrible doesn't mean that the tank is bad. You are a very bad player, but the tank is excellent. Good mobility, good firepower, excellent zoom, and versatile. These are the facts that most players struggle to see. Armour is useless in first gen MBT, so try not to take any hit. Leopard 1 fits perfectly into this meta, you're just a bad player who can't use it properly.

this is one of my favorite tanks in the game after the Panther A. It was also the first MBT that I got the free ace on. You are fantastic with it, especially for not having it spaded. When I used to play it heavily, APDS was going through tanks like a laser beam doing no damage still, so I may have to play her again.

I'm glad you tried the leopard, but tbh I really prefer my MKPz M47 G. Its very refreshing using the same HEAT as the M48, while also being weirdly survivable and quick. I'd recommend giving it a go

Leo is a great tank as a german main i can say that but when ur grinding leos ur playing with jagdtiger or tiger2 u got reliable armor you can bounce shots , immediatly using a non reliable armor tank can be hard for some players

Ah I love this tank. Truly a new breath of fresh air after 6.7 grind. Its fast,great gun and good rounds. I missed the old sound for it tho,iirc post italian release has the best sound. Wish i can have that sound again because the cannon slaps

The only thing that I don't love about this tank is the repair cost. 8000+ SL is a hard loss if you are having a bad day. It's my favorite tank but I sometimes get scared to play it because I don't want to lose 8k.

APDS got a buff a while back. Before it either bounced, or penetrated and caused no spalling and fragments, resulting in enemy medium tanks like T54s and T62s being able to survive multiple side shots. Also at its BR, German players would be going from Tigers and Panthers with reliable armour to a tank that was built around mobility, not armour, which resulted in German players trying to go head on against ZSU-57s.

You did the Panther A and Do 335 B2, which is a really strong combination, but have you tried the more difficult but more rewarding combination of the Panther G and Ta 152 C3? Panther G is slightly higher BR but doesn't get instantly killed by any plane with 50 cals, and the Ta 152 C3 only gets the nose mounted MK103 but has a much better flight model, crazy strong flaps, and 4 MG151s around the engine cowling which absolutely shred anything that crosses your path.

Little bit of a late comment, but Odd, the 105mm cannon that Rhienmetall uses have an APDS cartridge with 105x838mm measurements. The shell itself is only 58x272mm, and the tungsten penetrator is 55x147mm. Cheers to Scotland from Virginia!

Everything you said in description stands,but the problem is uptiers to 8.3,ghost sheels,no armor best armor...thats frustrating and It is very common when you are playing as Germany (the only problem with leo is like too much jumping gun when you stop and everyone can kill you until it stabilises)

My only problem with Leo 1 is how badly the mobility needs to be looked at. Spaded it still feels slower than a spaded Panther A. It loses speed way too fast when changing direction, too. I still feel it should've stayed 7.7, atm there's a huge black hole uptier for 6.7 where you'll consistently see Leos, Centurions and more.

OddBawZ -- how would you compare the Leopard 1 (7.3) vs AMX 30 1972 (7.7)? They're quite similar, but the AMX has the 20mm coax which is an insane backup/AA duty utility.

Leo was and still is one of the best tanks for it’s BR, although i started to prefer the OF-40 for it’s laser rangefinder, otherwise it’s just a chonkier Leo 1, very fun pasta mobile

Hey odd nice video, I think the person in question is me, so I just want to clear out somethings, I never said the leopard is a bad tank, infact I think it should've stayed at 7.7, all I said was that a stabilized leopard with apds only without heatfs be added, but since the vickers mbt would be inferior to it in every single way, I asked if there was a possibility that the leopard carried a weaker apds round like the one the bulldog used. I just generally enjoy the playstyle of the British centurions and stuff and thought maybe we can get something less painfully slow with stabs and if in my opinion since I have the RU251 I did Much rather use that as it is in a much better position and it's faster while being quite undertiered, either way though I would say I did much rather get the panther2 which I missed due to exams, as it can still be very competitive at a full uptier as it's much faster than the tiger2 and you can brawl with it, and with this put the german m48 at 7.3 where it should be like the other m48's. Nice video though!
