My Tele has a V neck. While it took some getting used to, I love it now. Combined with a 7.25” radius, it just fits the hand so well.

I have the Vintera modified 60’s Tele. That has the exact same wiring configuration and I have to say it’s amazing. Love it love it. This has one bonus over that guitar- truss rod adjustment not being at neck heel. That’s a pain on the vintage necks. There seems to be an easy work around with the tuners. I personally have done it this way for years and it’s very easy. You simply wrap your string around the tuning post however many times you want -I usually shoot for 2/2.5 wraps on the wound strings and three for the unwound strings and then you go through the hole and tighten up normally. This will allow a normal string length and look normal while still letting the locking tuners do their thing. I absolutely hate the look of locking tuners with me zero wraps around the post it looks so stupid and you’re always worried God forbid if somebody unscrewed the locker on the back the string would come flying off under tension. In this case there’s no actual parts to turn but still who wants to look at bare tuning posts. Sweet guitar, deal with the tuners!( or change if u can’t deal!) thanks for the video!

THX, got one of these and it's my first time changing the strings on it, I understood it was some sort of locking tuners but couldn't figure out the function of it and from what I've seen you are the only one having a video on how to do it. Next mission will be to sheild the pickups 'cause man.. they are noisy, I do enjoy the pickups and the config of it otherwise. My first tele and I love it.

Those locking tuners are a nightmare. Especially on the fly at a gig. I agree the neck position on the switch should be in position 4. Live you want to be able too switch quickly and decisively and this guitar wont lend itself to that as easily as it should. Im always amazed at few guitars really check all the boxes. This one was so close to perfect.

Agree. That series option should have been the push pull. Figuring out where you are on a 4 way switch can be tricky in real time

I agree. Just give me the vintage slotted type. They're super fast to change and don't slip, at least for me. I've tried the locking type, and I just don't think that they're worth the weight or complexity.

I have the same locking mechanism on my PRS Santana SE. I believe they are aftermarket Gotohs that I installed but I never had any issues once I realized that you need a flat head to break it loose.

I like the see through finish. I dunno how a tele soft v feels, but I use to have a Clapton signature strat and it had a soft v neck profile as well. I didn’t mind it. Felt comfortable playing chords

I did the exact same mods on my squier bullet tele. the series mod helps make the out of phase louder. I did however make sure I wired the switch so the series was in the middle and the neck was on the end.

What's your opinion on the barrel saddles vs individual saddles. Personally I feel the 6 individual will give you more adjustment but I've never had the barrel saddles. Ibanez tele has the individual ones

Anderson to think about how the face cancellation switching which originates from Brian May sometimes gives guitars like this one something of an electric sitar sound. I've occasionally used a guitar that was custom assembled for me with that same type of phase cancellation switching to generate that kind of timbre. I'm going to leave with that comment and ask this question again. Trogly, do you think you could get your hands on a Brian May Special and tear into it?

The white 60s strat would be the one I'd be interested in, as I already have a Tele that I'm happy with. Those tuners do seem odd. Will have to find one in a local music shop to see how the neck feels.

First time viewer - Thanks for the thorough and _honest_ review. It's refreshing to see someone cover the entire guitar in depth and to express both the good and the not so good. I noticed the scratches in the pick guard the second they first appeared on camera. I'm glad you pointed them out. Excellent HD camera work - I was drooling over the glossy finish. However I'll pass on this guy and continue to search for a new Tele. I'll certainly revisit Trogly's on a regular basis.

I like the look of it. The combination of the white blonde with anodised 'guard, yes please! I have those (Gotoh) tuners on my 60th anniversary Classic Player Strat and a coin in the slot is recommended for locking/ unlocking but is still fiddly for me ,plus side is they look normal. Same Strat also has a soft vee neck which I like because it's different to my other guitars.

The one guitar missing from my arsenal. Never had a Tele but I've got a few friends who have them & swear by them, to the point that they'd never play anything else. I quite like Esquires too but if I'm going to get one it'd have to be something really nice & probably more akin to Micawber, with a paf style bucker in the neck. That's the beauty of most Teles/Esquires though - you can put what you want in the neck & switch them around pretty easily (not this one though I noticed). Sounded awesome though!

One day a couple weeks ago I was on a mission at my local awesome guitar store. I was going there to most likely get an American Pro II Strat. But I decided that I’d play a bunch of them and see what happened. I played over 30 strats. The whole American line, mexican line, used ones from everywhere, and 5-6 custom shop strats. There was one that stood so far above all the rest of them that that I didn’t even have to do a second round. The winner stood over all 29 other strats laughing and pissing on their ashes. It felt lighter and resonated more, and sounded the best unplugged and plugged in. The second i picked it up I knew. That strat was believe it or not a 2022 MIJ JV Modified 60’s Strat in olympic white. I was shocked…. I was a US guitar snob till that day. Anyway. She’s so good that she must be haunted. Her name is Christine.

I have those vintage looking locking tuners (stew Mac) and they are ok but I prefer the vintage tuners for exactly the reason you pointed out, I like to be able to reuse my strings if I need to remove them from the headstock for whatever reason. Also, the regular three position Tele is all anyone will ever need on stage…decades of music prove that enough for me at least. 😎 Seems like the out of phase wiring causes the hum to be outer than usual too. 🤷‍♂️ I’m playing the Baja which is the same wiring.

Actually the way that 4-way switch is wired it regular and the description you mentioned is the 'modified' diagram which would benefit the JV modified much better (keyword: MODIFIED). The 3rd and 4th positions are swapped by putting the series mode on 3 and the neck pickup alone on 4 (i wired my Tradition CAB10 Tele this way over 4yrs ago and I love it!) and I have an Alpha push-pull pot I'll be installing very soon for those OOP sounds in the series and parallel positions. By the way that's an extremely hot pickup for a Telecaster that it makes my 8.6K bridge PU warm compared to this lava-hot 13.75K PU, no doubt I'd rock that Tele especially for the chunky soft V neck!

Why are the saddle intonation screws on telecasters always about a half inch longer than necessary? I always grind em down so they don't rip my hand. Just wondering.

After somewhere around sixty years of guitars in hand the soft V to C 7.25”r or a 7.25”r-9.5”r conical on a soft V-C remain the most comfortable for these knobby old fingers muscles and tendons.

What a great idea, lets have locking tuners that are really fiddly to use and take more time than a normal vintage tuner, on a guitar which, if you set it up well, really will not need them whatsoever. The only use for locking tuners on a telecaster is to make stringing up really quick and easy.

Nice and thorough review as always! If this guitar had an ash body and actual vintage-style, non-locking tuners it'd be the perfect Tele and probably better than Fender's lower-priced American Standards nearly bordering on Custom Shop level which is why they probably didn't spec it that way.

Fender could have made a better design on those tuners. Spertzel design would be great. You need a screw driver to hold the top while you tighten or un-tighten the peg. Try that if you accidentally break a string on stage. I'll be switching out mine.

I have Fotoflame Stratocaster. 50's reissue with soft V shape neck. Beginning 90-ies Japanese Fender have used not that great pickups and electronics. When I got mine it was in bad need of a regret to. So I have refretted it and changed whole pick guard. Used CTS pots and OAK switch. Installed pretty nice pickups. Gray bobbins A.Y. Custom 69. Moats period 5 ply pickguard. Guitar looks like million bucks. Plays awesome and sounds awesome. Love the neck. Neck is like most important part to me. Needs to be stable and vibrate good. Thicker once are just sounding better in most of the cases. Plus filling up the void is comfortable for playing to me.

That guitar reminds me of the Baja Telecaster. Those tuners look like there might be a learning curve. Maintaining Aesthetics and functional can be a hard balance. None the less awesome review!

You are correct. The JV model is essentially a Baja tele which has since been rebranded by Fender to a Vintera 50’s modified tele. I would take the 50’s modified over the JV as the 50’s modified has an alder body instead of basswood on the JV.

I agree, it's basically a Japanese version of the Vintera 50s Modified Těle, though as always Fender Japan doesn't get as good electronics, in particular this one doesn't have the Fender Custom Shop pickups that the Vintera has. Also, the satin neck is pretty different to the glossy lacquered fretboard on the Vintera.

I agree on the switch selection but I find it seems like lots of tone options but not alot of different sound with the distortion... Fit and finish looks A one...like you said a rewire and maybe some Danny Gatton pick ups...

The tele hits some sparkly high notes I like. The tuners I don't like. The neck profile is nice. I believe this sort of neck once was called a boat neck. I've seen a mid 20th century Martin that was equipped with the boat neck. I recall how nice it felt in the hand.

I love the 60s version of this, in gold. Absolutely beautiful, and I want to own one. But man oh man those locking tuners seem like such a nightmare. I have a Japanese 60s-style Tele from 2015 and I *never* have to tune that thing. Like, once a year. If I got one of these JV series Teles, I think I’d have to replace the tuners for regular ones right away.

I bought the 60's tele. The bridge pickup has staggered pole pieces. The 50's has flat. Is that the only difference in the pickups? Probably. But maybe not.

I honestly feel like this locking tuner design is the superior design due to the fact that they only torque down on the string hard enough to lock, and locking and stringing is all done in one step. I do see what you mean that you don’t fully know they’re locked without screwing them down yourself, but trust in the gear. Having used both designs over time, I def prefer these in practice. On the other hand I very rarely take strings off without intending on changing them.

I agree, although that did appear to be an obscene amount of rotations to get it to lock. Who the hell takes strings off to clean them? Lol wash your hands before playing and give em a quick wipe after... that's all I've ever needed... seems like lots of ppl don't like this style but I'd like to try em out

Question: if one plays in different tunings a lot , i.e wants to switch to drop d, back to standard, over to another obscure tuning, do these locking tuners have any effect on that? I.e. how do you actually destring the guitar? Sorry if noob question

@@excellerateurbreath to remove you just loosen the tuning key until the shafts let go and pull the string out of the hole. Sometimes you need a small screwdriver or coin to get them to unlock, but not generally.

@@excellerateurbreath if you're gonna play drop tunings from time to time, be certain to leave a couple winds on the tuning peg, as opposed to clamping the string with the lock and cutting it off flush. You'll be golden at that point 🤙

Sadly v necks are kind of a pain in the thumb for me if it's in the position where it's only your thumb is behind the neck. It is better to have both mids on position 3&4 though. I hope it's possible given that 4-way switch has its limits cause that pickup setting is kinda weird.

I have the JV 60's Custom Tele. Great guitar but Tele's sound thin out of phase and I rarely use it in that mode. The 4 way switch is a plus in any tele.

Hate the new locking tuners. Took forever to learn them, and heaven forbid a string break on a gig. The only redeeming thing about them is they look good, and look better than the standard Fender locker. Otherwise, the guitar is excellent, however I could do with out the PP switch as I never use it. I also switched out the pick guard for a single ply white one after slicing the side of my picking hand on the metal one. Wish Fender would buff those edges down a little! Those Tele saddles are on a lot of higher end Tele's once you get to the American Professional level. Definitely don't see them stock on lower end Fenders or Squiers. Consider them a premium part.

Obsidian wire, the solderless replacement electronic plate, uses the same setup in their 4-way switching option: Bridge-Middle-Neck-Middle series. I am already accustomed to it, since I moded my Tele.
