Great review Luke. Truly a feature rich tent. Why is there never perfection: just one more guy-out loop. But for those like myself who prefer a 25” sleeping pad, this tent is really just a one person palace. Another great, professional review.

All of Kuiu gear is fantastic. I have a Divide for hunting pack, a 66L internal frame for backpacking/hunting trips, and their clothing options are fantastic. They're pricy, yes, but functionality and warmth is perfect. The main flaw is that all their clothes are very athletic cut. I have to buy 1 or 2 sizes above what I normally do and it's still a little tight. And I'm in pretty good shape. The tent....the weight is why I don't have it. They're meant to hike into a base camp and be there for days, so weight is a temporary sacrifice.

I've been so impressed with their products that I've slowly replaced most of my outdoor clothing with KUIU brand clothing. I'm not surprised that this tent is as good as your initial review indicates. And what a great deal going on right now!

Mountain Star 2 is bomb proof. I purchased mine 6 months ago ( with the orange fly) and have 2 hiking weekends on the AT and one more trip ( non hiking) in WV with this tent. Two monster rainstorms and not a drop inside and this set up is super sturdy . Light enough to backpack, strong enough for Mother Nature and I have plenty of room for wide thermarest, quilt and 40L backpack . I’m 6’260 , and am looking forward to more trips w this tent . Love it ! ( I got the $350 sale too)

I've had this tent for a cpl years it's a great tent overall. I do agree with you early spring or late autumn the all mesh inner does make it a chilly tent. I've been in 30mph winds with mine and it was solid. I do have a cpl of niggles with it though the door tie backs are very fiddly and the zip storm flaps vibrate like crazy so they should use waterproof zips or somehow stiffen the flap.

true. depending on price, people see like, $50 versus $300 and it makes no sense to them, but we know that $300 one will last 10x longer bare minimum. that would be $500 worth of those $50 ones.. it's a no brainer.

minus 1 inch per side because of wall pitch, so 6 ft 4 inches, that leaves me 2 inches on either side of clearance, doing the math, 1/3 of my feet and head will be against the wall lol too short! after using the usmc 2 man, 7 ft + is mandatory. can't have my canvas or bedding get wet at all cost. not to say that's bad, my hiking tent it 6'2" but it's uncomfortable and therefore more for 1 or 2 nights out of convenience rather than by choice for pleasure. i need 6 to 8 inches at me head and at my feet. i'm not being locked into the norm of "this is how long these things are, consumer." 1 extra foot is literally unnoticable overall, yet adds 100% comfort vs. zero. Btw this tent looks insane 😂 very sick color, build, oh yea! lol. i'd use it with a shorter pad i guess, just a thermarest. i need to lay on my back when i wake, and do stretches because of a bad car wreck. and injuries to spine neck and back. need to be able to have my feet straight up and head not touch the other wall : ) W wolfpack

So ideally and as a min you need the following height +4" for feet, + 6" head and foot room (or just add 12") to your height to make it comfortable... i need min 86" for a tent to work 90" is what i like :) i wish the tent manufacturers would make an XL version for us taller people...

Bro, the brown groundsheet, heavier, is for earth, direct to ground, the grey is for interior, more "fabric-ey" lighter. i've been using 2 groundsheets for a while now, same, rugged one darker for outside, thinner lighter for inner. it's a game changer because my pad stays dry and clean even from "unavoidable" condensation. having 2 temperature differentials side by side really does the trick! it's wild. just did it before i watched this 😂 thermarest is bone dry. i've been using shingle layment. it's secret miracle material

I've taken my xmid 1p out on ben nevis in the uk winter and had no problems with it. Most tents can be 4 season tents as long as you have the gear and they can stand wind and snow loads (like pyramids or 3 pole exoskeleton types) Rather than "seasons", i think tents should be catagorised as follows: - Windspeed test (wind tunnel) - snow load test (how much weight can it take to top) - Summit qualification (single skin, freestanding, bathtub connected to the fly) - doesnt want to turn into a parachute in the highest wind even though its bad for condensation) - 4 season non summit features (artic helliburg style or ultralight pyramid style?) dan duston has the x-dome which is very like the tent you reviewed. but it can be steaked with only 4 pegs, you can use your trekking poles to connect either end of the cross pole to strengthen for much higher loads. i think the poles maybe less rigid tho but the trekking poles make up for it. its also uk style fly first or inner first too :) its under 1kg. i've also seen Slingfin (very good tents) use similar features but they are fidily when doing fly first.

Durston is the goat of tents, hands down beats this offering from Kuiu and most others in the world of high tech quality gear...and priced less than this one
@PHYSIZIST21 сағат бұрын
@@Fusildechasse true. also fly is polyester again too. since since the inner makes for the one sided vestibule it allows for a nice balance of vestibule and large, odd shaped inner for even longer pads/stuff etc. the trekking poles can also be used to pin out the fly door whilst supporting the tent meaning you need 1 less peg :) it just like how dan has stuck to the ethos of a 4 peg, actual freestranding exo-skel tent which could be guyed out to the hilt and supported with trekking poles when required

I bought mine earlier when the deal did not include the gear caddy. Additionally I think your gray lightweight ground sheet is an interior floor cover. That's something else I didn't get. I know that I did pay less, but I also got aluminum to me the setup is finicky and weird, but that'll change with time. That's just how it is with fly first tents. It always seems harder.

Everyone I've seen review a Kuiu tent has been pretty impressed with it. I'm curious about the Storm Star in case you get around to testing that out also ;) The main reason that I've been avoiding American tents for the most part is that so few pitch outer first like proper tents. Unless the inner is largely solid like in a mountaineering tent (when they HAVE inners), an inner first pitch is a design flaw. And you'd think that the tent designers based in Seattle surrounded by RAIN FOREST would account for pitching tents in rain, since there's a reason for why they are called "rain forests."

@isded822022 сағат бұрын
Fly first is the great feature in rain, but IMO not when the poles are outside the awning, you spend a certain amount of time to thread the poles through the sleeves. And also you lose some of inner value because of additional dimension between poles and fly

@rosslangerak836115 сағат бұрын
I like the fact that the poles are straight. I think that makes for a stronger frame. It's a minor thing, but I am concerned that one end of the fly can't be pulled away from the inner tent. If there is contact between the fly and the tent, this could allow transfer of rain or condensation from the fly to the inner. It would be so easy to just add a loop to the other end.

Unless & until this company publishes the tear strength of the material you'll not have a valid comparison - because tear strength is all important during strong gusty windy weather conditions. What is the tear strength of the guyout lines, just as important. We only know 1,200 hydrostatic head rating for the outer material is, in my opinion, below minimum standards of 3,000 or higher.
