Well its been well and truly proven its a solid 3+ season tent, especially when the solid inner version come out. You’re a f*cking genius Dan. This is an incredible design. Kudos man, well done. For those wondering, the “best” 1p fully freestanding tent - the Nemo Dragonfly Osmo - comparing packed weights (with stakes, bags, etc.) this is about 5.5oz lighter, and looks loads roomier, more headroom (2”), more stormworthy, and is fly first pitch. And this is $60 less. I don’t even need this tent, I do pretty well the X-Mid even in rocky/beachy conditions, but I might just have to pick one for the bougie solo treks. Thanks for being a true innovator in a world where “innovation” amounts to using thinner fabrics to cut weight on basic designs. 👏🏻👏🏻

@@LeavenotraceexpeditionsMost of the insulation comes from your sleep system anyways. The most important thing that distinguishes a 4 season tent from a 3 season tent is the sturdiness against rough weather and the ability to shed snow. @02ditf23Ай бұрын
@@smellybearc7411 “The most *important* thing that distinguishes a 4 season tent from a 3 season tent is the sturdiness against rough weather and the ability to shed snow” That’s only partly true, the main distinguishing features of a 4 season tent are a fly that reaches all the way to the ground and a solid inner. Which this tent has neither. While your insulating ground & top layers will do an adequate job at mitigating heat loss through convection; cold drafts in extreme low temperatures can quickly tank your body temperature, there’s no way I’d take this tent into extreme low temps, the wind would cut right through it. It’s a solid tent don’t get me wrong but it would definitely rest in the 3+ season category. Look to the likes of the Hilleberg Suolo if you want to see what a true 4 season tent looks like.

Interesting design, and I really do appreciate the fly first/outer+inner pitch as they are not very common in North America (they are however very common in the EU). I also noticed the center low peg loops, which are nice for pulling the outer further out and up for more airflow. Some criticisms: While your bottle test does give a vague idea as to how it would handle snow loading (and it is kind of unfair using trekking poles in that test as you are comparing to a tent that does not have them), it really does not give any indication as to how it would handle wind loading as that force pushes the tent over and down flattening the facing side and breaking the back poles. A real test would be how it handles wind load (and it's failure point) using a wind machine with and without the trekking poles. Crossing twin poles rather than Y joints would also make the tent even stronger for a slight increase in weight (that and single poles are so much easier to work with and less likely to break than Y joints). Otherwise looks like a good lightweight tent, though for me I have more interest in the 2p version for a (I presume) second door, second vestibule, and increased through ventilation.
@durstongearАй бұрын
The bottle test is without the trekking pole supports, so it is a fair test. The X-Dome can do triple without the pole supports. But yes I agree with you that it is only one type of load and other circumstances can be different. The corner guylines help a lot and trekking pole help a lot if you are in severe winds. With the poleset design, we upsize the spine portion that is just one arch, so it uses larger tubing to achieve similar strength as dual arch but at a lower weight. Cheers, Dan

Good job Dan! Shocked that you were able to get all of that tent into a 2 pound design.

in August were in Iceland with xmid 2solid. it is very difficult to set up a tent in the weather conditions of Iceland. I had to redo it a little. I've been looking for just such a tent design for a long time. waiting for xdom2

After a few seasons of using trekking pole tents, what I kind of miss is having a trekking pole handy after my tent is set up, I often find myself in need of one to hike down a slope to get water or take an evening stroll. It doesn’t sound like a big deal but the older I get the more dependent upon the poles (or one pole, anyway) I tend to be. I really like the design and space.
