Why not that dog (저개) ? I'm assuming your dog (hopefully fictitiously lost) is with neither you (the speaker) nor any of us (the listeners).

Danny Knowles : Native Korean speakers also use 그 to refer to someone or something that is not visible, yet both speaker and listener(s) share or know about. For example, a mutual friend, or something you you've both seen. For example: 그 영화 means "That movie", which refers to a movie you have both seen. Or 그 음식, "That food", referring to a particular delicacy you've both eaten. 그 식당, "That restaurant" refers to a place where you've both eaten. And 저 식당, "That restaurant [pointing]" refers to the physical building where you go and eat.

Thanks Tony. So if it's your dog that's invisible and I've never seen your dog, in this case, would I ask you "Where is that dog (저개) of yours?"? Or does (저개) refer only to a dog that neither party knows anything about? Kinda like (저) is exclusively used for something strange or surprising or unknown? I've only just started learning Korean and "this" is one of my first words. Ugh ... "this" isn't going to be easy. When in doubt (especially for beginners) is it safer to use (저) or (그) when referring to "that"? I would not want to offend anyone (especially when talking about their lost or invisible dog).

These kinds of lessons are the best. It gives the student I guess the ability to ask questions. just by having what is that? and being able to ask is a powerful way to start learning nouns. More like this, like How do i get there? How can I say this... It would be great to have a lesson on these kinds of learning tools so we can self learn to.
