George Montgomery's AA/GS 1969 Mustang was the car that killed the gasser class. In 1968 or 69, I was living in the St. Louis area as a 19 year old drag racing fan. My home track was the old Alton Dragway, and one weekend Alton featured a show with 10 AA/Gas Supercharged cars, which I loved. I attended the race and of all of the traditional gasser cars, such as the Anglia and Willys, was Montgomery's late model mustang. Because of the Mustang's better aerodynamics, he slaughtered all of the old traditional gassers. You could watch the same Mustang on nitro running in the 6s instead on Montgomery's car on gasoline running in the 9s. I knew, as a 19 year old, that day was the day the music died for the gasser class.

That Alton Dragway now a house trailer park. When I used to take my wife and son through there headed out to the motocross track north of there I would point it out. After a while they would tease me, “Hear it comes, keep your eyes on the road, quit looking over there!”.

Pink put the 427 Ford tunnel port over the top of any Hemi. . Built a gear drive to replace the timing chain. He built the last one for Australia before he passed away. ED Piink : The legend of fuel drag cars..

Sneaky Pete, engineer and fuel rail driver extraordinaire, designed the gear drive for the Cammer. Pink is the man that figured out to retard the right bank 6 degrees and the left bank 12 (when on fuel) and with the first whap of the throttle the stretch of the 6 foot timing chain had both cams set correct. Ohio George pioneered the Cammer FOR BLOWN GAS USE, and this... video, needed to make that clear.

Foot note: before the Willys George’s supercharged Cadillac powered 34 ford is in the Garlits’ museum, yes the mustang started the death spiral of the gassers, A/FX classes didn’t help either. 1974 Gainesville last race for the stand, only one car in its own class, and that was it. Now if you want to relive that era watch the southeast gassers assn, they run the organization by the 1967 NHRA rule book, great racing.

Gassers were killed by Funny Cars. The original FCs were door slammers, ie, Gassers moved forward. When Ford built the first one piece flip top cars we knew it was over. The Modified Production class also died

Technically they were killed by AFX cars then those were killed by funny cars then funny cars liked NHRA drag racing by not resembling factory cars at all. Sadly there no going back. It really was the stock classes that made NHRA so popular in the first place.

Gasses Forever, I had a 41 Willys coupe with an injected 425 ci, 1966 Buick Wildcat engine and a Muncie m22, narrowed 57 Ford wagon rearend and a Super Bell straight axle on the stock Willys springs and steering, spindles etc. The engine was set back 9 or 10 inches, the car had all the original body trim, headlights, etc. and original paint, it would do bumper dragging wheel stands, and was titled and licensed for the street, this was in California around 1980, what memories

My older brother used to take me to the drag races when I was 10 to 13 and one time I seen a guy with a black opal cadet with a race Hemi jammed in to it tubbed full cage it was nothing like I’ve ever seen and I was thinking this guy knows what he’s doing or he needs his head examined! It was everything he could do to keep it on the ground nobody could touch it,it’s something I’ll never forget.

Long time drag race fan from US 30 in the 60's. Many years later was a roofing salesman in Chicago. Went on a call in Chicago at a company called Schumacher Electronics. Didn't think much about it. When i went into his office, behind his desk, was a large picture of his car blasting off from a night run at US30. I felt I was in the presence of royalty. We sat and talked for a good hour, not about roofs. The company i worked for changed hands and I left. I don't know who did the roof but every time I see a picture like 10:55, I think about that talk.
