A few things to add. I'm beginner in divin, just after 10th dive with OWD and I bought Garmin Descent G1. I didn't have smart watch before, so for me in the price of $500 I've got a great sport smartwatch and diving computer in one. I like the garmin dive log app, customization, etc. I'm also software dev so I've created my own watch faces for my watch. The battery lasts very long, but I also have solar edition. The one disadvantage is that the screen is quite small, very readable, but still I need to focus on it to read anything. The notification problem or mobile app - it is still customizable, you can turn most of them from the watch itself. Regarding mobile app - I haven't have any problems with that, always connected, but I'm using android. If I would have another smartwatch, I would probably buy dedicated diving computer, but Garmin is great for my OWD needs

I've been diving with a Mk2i and the T1 transmitter for a few years now and I have loved it. Glad to see you have finally gotten to do a review of a Garmin dive computer. It does give a fair bit of alerts and it can get annoying at times. There is a silent diving mode that you can enable and it should disable any vibrations and tones during a dive. As for the chirping of the transmitter, I have gotten used to it over time but you can also adjust the transmit power of the transmitter. Lower setting will have a lower range but it does make the chirping quieter.

Mom told me that I started to swim before walking, and all my friends here in Ukraine can swim, i never saw somebody here who cant =) I saw maybe somebody, who swim not so great, but can't at all?

i think theres a lot that contributed to it... i can't imagine going into the apple watch ecosystem myself for example, just off of the battery alone. 1 month over 1 day, any day. add to it the concept of subscribing to use an existing feature, and i think that's enough ammunition to ridicule a company, and well justified at that - in my own opinion. i don't think the capability of the watch is the target of the ridicule to as much of an extent, bar bicking below 40m. which people might not think of as a bad thing, but in the unlikely 'what if' scenario, on which most of diving principles are founded in the name of safety, it does objectively fail much sooner than other computers. that being said, if you like it and it works for you, that's the main thing to keep in mind! im sure it works for a lot of people. after all, that's why we have so many brands to choose from.

I got a Mk2i second hand with 30 dives for half the retail price. I have it for a while and I like it as a smart watch and a dive computer. In regards of screen brightness, it's actually good for me. I was a bit concerned about the sonar chirp, but I reduced the transmitter power. I never noticed it and no one ever complained. The app connection always worked perfectly for me, but in terms of UX I have to admit it is a bit of a mess. Formfactor is also a thing. I eventually got used to it, but for a day to day watch it is big. The Mk2i was already quite expensive. If it was today and I had to pay the full price for it, I would probably go for other smart watch and pick a Shearwater Peregrine TX as a computer. The Mk3i does look very cool and I am very curious on what they can come up with in following generations.

I thought having full GPS data from my dives would be awesome; however, after I arrived back at shore after boat dives, many spots weren't recorded. After the year renewal, I decided to cancel the subscription. Last November, my LDS had ScubaPro G2 dive computers with the old style, user servicable battery transponders for $700. They told me the demand for high dollar dive computers weren't as popular as the AI Shearwaters and Garmins. That chunky box is perfect and it doesn't emit audible pings as it uses LF radio.

Great review Gus. Agree, the messaging function is more of a gimmick at this point. But the one subwave function that is nice, is it shoes your buddies depth and distance from you. So if visability is not great it does help to relocate them. The sonar transmitter can get annoying, but you can minimize it, signal strength is adjustable. The thing I found that really helps is put it on a short hose and tuck it behind you vs right on the first stage. Get it away from you ear. There are times I don't even notice it. As far as the app, that is weird, I've never has an issue with connecting to either the Connect or the Dive ones. I come back to the boat after a dive and it automatically sends the dive to the log. But, I am on android, and not Apple. The Dive app with the map is great, just make sure to start your dive on the watch before jumping in so the GPS can get the entry location. But I'm with you, I like both the Shearwater and Garmin, so every day I use the Garmin, and then add the Shearwater as my second computer on the dive.

Like your videos. Keep them coming please. Agree with your point that dive gear price points are nearly always are driven by quality and functionality. For most divers recreational diving is what they do. That is Air or Nitrox, single tank or manifold twins within no decompression limits or perhaps with modest deco times (even if no bail outs, which is another thing altogether). So a lot of the Garmin 3i computer features are not and never will be of use to them. For them the Suunto Ocean and AI pod is half the price and provides the same form factor with the same Bühlmann algorithm, the same type of sports and health monitoring features, the same easy to read AMOLED screen and useful battery life - and it does not beep and has fewer buttons. It is cheaper because it will not message other divers on the same computers type and is no good (not designed to be) for independent twin side mount, trimix or CCR - which only a few folks will ever do.

It would be great to see if the messaging aspect really works in a cave - I would love to see a video on that once Woody is back. I hope he gets better soon. As for the comuters I personally think the simpler the better - a diving computer is a supporting item and should be simple and not distract you with complicated handling for pressing button combinations and stuff - imagine you are narced (or panicked) and mistake the buttons and get panicked even more bc you are not able to get the infomation you want on the display... the simpler the better. I think the garmin computer is very good for technical divers amd special divers that want a computer for a lot of deph but if you are a recreational diver I don't believe that the benefits of the watch are that essential for you and do not outweigh the heavy pricing. If you can afford it, well... no one is stopping you but for recreational divers I personally think the simpler it is the better - especially if you do not dive on a regular basis.

I’ve switched from The Suunto Core Eon to the mk3i but I’ve been using and wearing Garmin’s watches for a long time (910xt then Fenix 3, 5, Epix) so I’m used to the 5 buttons. Bottom line, it’s a great watch with a super bright screen (I dive in old slate quarry which are pretty dark and I’m over 50 which doesn’t help 😊) and you can wear it all the time, run, sleep, hike, yoga, You name it, it will do the job. The tiny light is, and I was skeptical at first, a great feature, even under water. Obviously, It will not replace a diving light.

Good review, I was thinking about getting a new dive computer. I went and watched your unboxing video that you linked at end. More in the budget of what I would like to spend. The Garmin sounds to have quite a lot of functions. I've had numerous Garmin products, a few have been underwhelming in actual use. As in failures of their primary use.

Fyi: android has a much larger market share than iOS at 70.7% vs. 28.5%, respectively. These numbers are as of the first quarter of 2024.

I used garming from mk1 to mk3, amazing all day with logged more than 300 dives. All working flawlessly and sold my old models to get the upgrades, give a good resale price. Never had connection issues with the app, maybe u need an update of the software. Trackers everything u can imagine.

Thank you Gus for reviewing Mk3. I recently bought Mk3 and I am loving it. Amazing piece of tech it is. Btw what watch face do you have on your mk3i?
@ubaldo_ubi_purchiazza51092 ай бұрын
I have done more than 200 dives by now, with the MK3i...few of them deeper than 70 mt...one over 100 mt. It's an AMAZING dive computer and an AMAZING smartwatch (with tons of different sports on it). If I have to find something negative: when the PPO2 is getting high, the computer is asking you if you want to switch gas...EVERY TIME, is pretty annoying. Said that, it's the best dive computer (even better than Shearwater).

Yes, its expensive, but take the Sherwater Teric worth $1500 and the Apple Ultra worth $800 you have exceed the combo price of the Garmin Mk3i.

Love this video Gus! Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on the Suunto Ocean? Asking for a friend 👀🙈
@johnhogg97562 ай бұрын
It’s dead easy to remove sports you won’t use in the connect app. Or add sports that aren’t installed and change the order of sports/activities so your most used show up higher in list in quick access. You can also change or add button combos to do certain things. Like I added press and hold middle right and top left to lock buttons. Press and hold bottom left and top right for Man Over Board.

Those were great criticisms for improvement! I have managed to limit the notifications to just sms and phone calls (plus ig dms by choice) on my mk2s i can't remember where i did it haha, but I freaking love this watch / computer. And YES i hope they put the light on the smaller watch. They seem to mimic those base functions with the Fenix line though 🙂

The chirp also bothers everyone else in the dive group. I went on a dive where the shop was testing them out, and 5 people had them. It was the worst dive i have been on.
@matt_stu2 ай бұрын
You can lower the transmitter power to reduce the chirp sound level. I still didn't like it on the lowest power level, so i moved it on a hose and it's routed next to my hip/ weight pockets in close proximity to the hand where my watch is. Now i don't hear anything anymore and have never heard anyone else hear it.

Can you do a video on your recreational set up. That would be awesome.
@johnhogg97562 ай бұрын
Garmin aftercare is top quality too, more often than not they will replace out of guarantee broken watches too.

I just got the Suunto Ocean and would love to hear how it compares. Other than the light, it sounds like the features are comparable.
@j3ts287Ай бұрын
So basically, it’s a good all-around fitness watch that could also be used for some recreational diving.

What did they do before dive computers? Do a video on that. Was it paper and pencil. How did you know your depth, how long you need to stop on the way up and all that other stuff.
@ironized2 ай бұрын
I was going to mock you so hard until I saw the end. Depth gauges, times and RDP Tables/slates. Basically same calculation as a giant table and you worked off it.
@Tegneaufreak2 ай бұрын
Stop rules are the same. I started diving when computers were new.. you were basically out of your mind to rely on a computer.. so.. you had a watch, depth gauge and dive tables and you planned before the dive and dived that plan. You could extend the dive by doing a multi-level dive, which would require more planning before hand. I quickly started using a computer and other divers thought I was nuts..

If you want a look into old time dive equipment, there is a yotube channel called "Alec Peirce Scuba", who has learned diving in the 1960s or 70s. Used to build his own rebreather. He has a video list called vintage scuba, where he shows some of the old equipment he used. Very interesting. They started diving without pressure gauges. They had something call J-Valve on their tank, that allowed you, when you ran out of air, to pull a lever and have a couple of minutes more air to get to the surface ... crazy stuff...
@Yggdrasil422 ай бұрын
I second the recommendation for Alec Pierce’s channel.

Is there any chance you guys could do a reaction video to reptiles in marine environments? like Marine iguanas, Salties, Sea snakes, Komodo dragons/monitors in general, etc. I know you've had a few videos with underwater Crocs, Gators and some snakes, brilliant videos.

Well, i use Teric with 2 transmitters for sidemount cave diving, because it bulletproof. As a secondary computer i use Huawei Watch Ultimate (it does all health and training features. After 100 dives Huawei Ultimate stopped to react apparently due to water damage. Huawei kniws the problem and replaced it immediately
