Early in my cave diving journey my buddy and I dove a cave that was new to us. The entrance is not much bigger than a diver with gear and several feet long. It then opens into a room about 10 to 15' in diameter and continues on from there. I went in first and my buddy lagged behind still in open water while I got the primary line set up. Once I entered that first room, I turned around to watch and wait for my buddy. The first thing I noticed when I turned around was about a dozen openings in the walls of the room that all looked nearly identical to the actual entrance I just came through. It was what I imagine it would look like to be inside a piece of Swiss cheese. If not for the guideline I was running, I could not have identified the actual entrance with any confidence and I was only 10' inside the cave. I had been through all the training and knew the importance of the guideline, but at that moment it REALLY sunk in.

As an open water diver I am 1000% aware that I have no business going in to an underwater cave. (Nor do I want to! As a child my mom and I got briefly trapped in a regular cave and I was traumatized for life.) I just don't understand these people. Do they want to die? I was a regular "dry caver" (is that a word in english?) for like 7-8 years, never dove before. But holly cow these guys do everything that they possibely can to disorient themselves. I had the opportunity to "explore" on my own (the ppl who were familiar were behind, but letting me explore), and with that experience, I am watching in horror what these ppl do. I'm 17 minutes into the vid and I have no clue where they turned and where they went to....

I really appreciate this channel as a beginning diver. They talk about a lot of the basics and also more advanced stuff still far above my grade. But when I did have some worries, seeing how confident these guys talk about how it goes and show it, has helped me quite a bit. I'm not a diver but love watching your channel, I'm a hiker/wild camper/mountain runner though and find so much of what you mention about safety relatable, people don't realise that common sense alone isn't enough, you need to know the techniques and safety precautions that people who have messed up doing what you're doing before you, have discovered through trial and error, and occasionally death e.g. navigating on a mountain top when there's zero visibility is very similar to being in a silted out cave system etc. so knowing how to use a map and compass and walk off bearings can be equally as important as being able to navigate with reels and lines in a cave.

@13:36 I’m a flight instructor and what Woody says here, and really a lot of things they both say in their other videos are so closely related to flying. Especially when it comes to the hazardous attitudes like these divers have here. We’ve seen it so many times where pilots exceed aircraft limitations once and the aircraft is still intact, or non instrument rated pilots flying into clouds for a few seconds and nothing crazy happens. It’s that false sense of confidence that says, “that wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.” That only solidifies the mentality of it’s not so bad and they can probably do it again, and maybe even a little more next time. When in reality the next time could be the flight where they cause structural damage to the plane ripping the wings off, or getting so deep into the clouds they’re unable to maintain positive navigation and control of the aircraft and spiral straight into the ground. Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first and the lesson afterwards.

I was just thinking that. Private pilot with instrument endorsement working on commercial. I watch these videos as a diver but as a more experienced pilot and I am in awe how closely related it is to see the hazardous attitudes of this stuff. Not having the humility to realize IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. Get training. I want to get cave certified but I’m even worried at 100 dives if I’m even ready to go to the tech world. Can’t imagine being an open water diver with no training doing this.

It’s a personal limitation you set to yourself when you’re calm and have no external pressures on you to complete a goal. For example. If I’m not comfortable flying in 15 knots of wind then I don’t go. So when my buddy really wants to fly and I feel obligated to take him and it’s beyond my personal minimums we always fall back to that.

So, I saw this at Ginnie two weeks ago again at Jackson Blue two dudes running camera rigs, single tank backmount, split fins, and no reels or spools on them past the signs. I cared a lot and it bothered me, I signaled I was pulling my primary reel because I didn’t think they understood it wasn’t a permanent line. I’ve had a couple people tell me that variety about ignorant people will pass with time. I mean the whole joke about “here’s your sign” really rings true. The scuba police are there at Ginnie. Somebody on a go cart wash checking divers, so I’m fine with that.

I got the pleasure of diving Ginnie last year with some friends, it was an incredible experience, especially under that log with all the tannins in the water. I had about 100 dives prior in the lake I live on so this amount of visibility was insane. We had a really experienced guide, he also took us to Devils Den and the Grotto, it was around Halloween so they were having an underwater pumpkin carving contest right outside of the entrance to the ballroom, pretty cool. I've got a bunch of pics of us (trying) to sit on that log.

I feel this way when my mother in law starts cooking and trying to take care of things she has no knowledge in. Example: bed bugs. They have them in their room. I've told her that they are immune to pesticides. Pesticides will not work on them. So I gave her some alcohol and masking tape with the instructions to put tape down and rip off bed bugs and eggs, then spray with alcohol. I had them and got rid of them this way. Did she do that? Nah. Too much work. She bought spray and sprayed the mattress and got upset when none of them died. Of course it didn't work. I told her it wouldn't. So she bought fogger. She still hasn't set those off yet (it's been two weeks since purchase) so maybe she's taking my advice and realizing it isn't going to work. I offered to get some climexa (it's silica dust. My ex husband got rid of some with this. It cuts them open. The only problem is it's a pain to apply and you have to dust it over all eggs so that when they hatch, they're immediately cut up.) but she didn't want that because it would "poison the dog." So I offered to get diametecuous earth food grade which works just like the climexa. Nah. It'll poison the dog and her because she has COPD. Mind you this is the same woman who, they had roaches, and I got rid of them with spray and advion. Told her to put down some advion in their room and the first thing she asked is if the dog would go for it. I paused and said NO. Which I cant guarantee that. The dog could easily sniff it out and eat some. I got zevo spray to kill their roaches and she insists I poisoned her and the dog with it, when she came out with a list on her phone of all the oils in it and how they are deadly to humans and dogs. To which I said, "do you see this thing here that says SAFE FOR USE AROUND CHILDREN AND PETS? IF THIS WERE DEADLY THEY COULDNT PUT THAT OTHERWISE THEYD ABSOLUTELY RISK LAWSUIT." tldr I understand how woody feels. I really do. I'm not arrogant. I'm just faced with stupid too much.

Back in 1981 I was stupid enough to try this same exact thing, single tank with one light at the Devil's ear. When I watched this, it gave me goosebumps because that was me. I got lost, panicked and almost lost my life. I thank my lucky stars that I somehow managed to get myself under control and find the entrance. I remember how relieved I felt as i took a break at the bottom of the entrance with the sunlight shining down. I never entered a cave again.

One, it's not fair to close off caves . Those who love to cave dive deserve to be able to do it. They know the risks associated with diving. Two, if caves are closed, there will always be something else enjoyable but dangerous that people want to stop. Where does it end? I ride horses for fun. Riding is not a safe sport/hobby. You are on the back of a 1000lb animal with a mind and will of its own. If you don't know what you are doing, you can get seriously injured. Even if you know what you're doing, you can still get hurt. I know the risks. But my enjoyment outweighs the risks involved. It wouldn't be fair to me and others who enjoy riding to ban it because some careless/inexperienced person was injured or killed. It's the same in my opinion, when it comes to caves. Keep the videos coming Gus and Woody! I really enjoy them!! Love you guys!❤️❤️❤️

Im working my way to cave diving classes. Currently have AOW, advanced wreck, deep diver, search and recovery, navigation, and taking my solo diver. Need more dives to finish my solo so, im diving every chance i get. When my instructor made me turn off all lights during my advanced wreck and then he siltted the room out, no way i would have found my way out without the line. It was black and we were still close to the entrance. We also had a backup smaller tank and reg attached to us.

Diving is one of those weird worlds where you cant be over prepared unless your trained for it. No dive lights unless trained because a light can easily trick you into going into territory your not ready for. You can easily go buy everything online and some shops will sell it to you, doesnt mean your anywhere close to being ready to use the equipment.

i lived in Gainesville for a few years and visited ginnie springs (on inner tubes/with snorkel) a few times! I saw the cave entrance and it sparked my interest since i often free dive. Quick question. I know if one of your 3 lights fails, the dive is over. What if you bring 6 lights like Gus? Would the dive still be called if you have 5 working lights left? Not to worry, I'm not a diver and would never enter a cave under any circumstance. Btw these videos give me enormous anxiety lol

I dive with 4, but my main light is the brightest at 4,000 lumen, it also lasts a lot longer since it's a canister light. My backup lights are all 3,000 lumen but they don't last as long so even with 4 lights if my main light failed I would call the dive. Unless we are like really close to our objective...like if we were at Ginnie and wanted to go to see Tom Mount's Plaque, and my light failed 50 feet from it, I would just complete the swim with my backup light, and then get out since I technically still have three working lights (minimum for cave diving).

Nothing serious ever went wrong on my flatwater trips. It made me falsely think I could just do whitewater kayaking. I thought to myself, how different can it be? It's still kayaking. But dude. it's a different monster man. I never needed training for flatwater kayaking.... whitewater requires training and real skill to avoid having a problem. I had no idea how much more different and incredibly intense it was. I thought I was totally qualified. I was NOT!

In long deep caves where there are still unexplored sections and its hard and dangerous to push deeper due to silt. Would it be possible to take it a pressure hose or something and feed it in as far as they can safely. Then head to the surface and run a pump creating water flow out of the cave. Like how they clear drains. Only not as violent as to not damage the cave. And depending on the cave system. Could you pump air into a room? Creating safe-ish spots people could rest or wait for help if need be

18:35 I gotta be honest, I don’t dive and at most will snorkel because the open water and being under it just nah I am good. I would much quicker skydive etc Anyway I had no idea, when I was growing up in my houses pool my dad had these old pair of flippers I found downstairs in his things around like 2004, I was young 11 probably. Anyway, I had no idea that they even made flippers with a crevasse, until watching this lol obviously using those I did fall in love with how effortlessly I could carve the water and fast I could move. What is the differences with the flippers and why use each for the different systems exactly?

@divetalk serious question about this situation specifically. With this being a spring and with a lot of flow around at this particular time, could they follow the bubbles of their open circuit being reasonably close to the cavern zone? I'm a total non-diver with no experience in diving at all. I'm from Ireland, the water is WAY too cold my friends. 😂. I'm just wondering if, in a worst case scenario would this be a possible help? Obviously they shouldn't have put themselves IN the situation in the first place. Simply wondering out loud.

Not so much the bubbles, because even in the high flow most of the bubbles go straight to the ceiling and it's hard to make sense of a cloud of bubbles disappearing into fractures/pockets in the ceiling. However, the flow itself would have led them right to the entrance in this particular case (when they were right under the exit and less than 10' away). That particular part of the cave is known for "throwing divers out" if they don't expect the exit to be so sporty. So even in a cave that is known for shooting divers out when they get too close to the exit, they still couldn't figure out where the exit was. Flow is not always a good clue though. The water goes through all kinds of places that a diver can't fit through and the flow can sometimes lead the wrong way. A much better option would have been for them to cover their dive lights and look for the glow of daylight coming in through the exit. It would have been very obvious if their own lights weren't overpowering the natural light. They were looking right at the exit from 10' away and just didn't recognize it. Trained cave divers will often cover their lights momentarily as they approach the exit (last 20' to 100' in most caves) so they can see it more clearly. I usually turn my light off completely once I am close enough to the exit to see clearly with natural light so that I can enjoy the view while on safety/deco stop. The natural light coming into the cave is very calming and often beautiful.

@CL-gq3no that makes total sense now you explain it yeah. The cave roof would have all sorts of crevasses to catch the air plus it could snake up and down meaning the air has no vertical path out. Thank you for your response, very informative 👍

Damn, I knew it was gonna be that thing where you know where you are, but don't know how to get out. I started the video with that thesis. I carefully inspected the video @5:04 to familiarize myself with the area, and the wooden debris seemed to me to form a 'U' letter facing with its opening towards the sign from that perspective - which I tried to remember. Now going back they're at the sign at @14:55 swimming further and there's no shape I familiarized myself with earlier. The cave just looks much different. I know where they are but the surroundings are much different from that position. I would only guess which way to go from the angle I remembered them approaching the sign from. It's so easy to misjudge in the depths of mother nature, scary and deadly as hell.

In other episodes with lost open circuit divers, you say “if only they brought a flashlight” when they are lost at night in the ocean. I guess my question is should I bring a flashlight for emergency during open circuit or no?

In the ocean, absolutely. A signal mirror is a good idea too for being seen in the daytime. For caves, no lights without training. They aren't supposed to be in the cave at all, not even 1 inch, but the lights allowed them to go WAY too far into the cave and the lights also masked the dim natural light from the exit which was right in front of them.

Hey, guys! Non-diver here and fan from Brazil. I have some questions about the lines: when you're cave diving do you have to hold on to the line during the whole dive? And about setting up your own line, how does that work? Do you set up a line if you're going to an area of the cave where you can't find one (wouldn't that be unexplored cave area and a no no?) Or if you want others to find you? Sorry for the confusion. Just love how you guys always explain things so well to us.

As a tech/cave/rebreather instructor, once they turned their lights on, I did not want to watch any further. We have seen this too many times - OW divers going beyond the cavern signs. Stupid is not the correct word. Suicidal is. Yes, should their lights fail, they have: no light, no experience, a single tank each, a useless snorkel, and worst of all, no line to lead them back out and no skills for how to get out.

1.Always have a guideline to the surface. 2. Use 1/3 of your oxygen for diving, 1/3 for getting back & the last 1/3 for any possible delays or holdups. 3. Bring multiple lights incase one should fail, but diving glowsticks would probably be better as they are lighter, don't rely on batteries or electronic components and can be tied off to the guideline, Making it easier to NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THE GUIDELINE. Though they may not have the light penetration needed for some cases, they give off a lot of light in dark areas, plus they last around 12 hours.

I have been in a real cave before and I can say, when the light go out, you have no idea where to go, combine the twist and turns that can totally make one lose notion of where they are. Like, I had no Idea we where back at the entrance after doing some walk with some turn, only notice one I went the entrance looked to the sides and saw what I saw when entering. In a cave, the entrance can look very different from what you remember or have imagined, and that is how one can take the totally wrong turn.

Last time I went to Ginnie my buddy Cory and I hit all he caverns, obeying the rule of thirds and the no lights rule in the ear and eye. We had fun in the eye swimming through the little hole in the ceiling, we gazed into the abyss beyond the cave sign. Just before hitting thirds we saw a group of cave divers lights flashing below, so we vacated the cavern to allow them room to deco. Fighting the flow in he ear was intense, there was a lot of rain right before the day we dove so we had to almost spider man down the side to the cave mouth. My buddy led the dive, I followed him down past the log to the edge of the cave. I was right behind him as he slipped into the final bit of cavern seen at 3:52 turned around and grabbed hold of the rock center bottom of the screen. He wedged himself against the left wall to avoid being blown out, I grasped the narrow walls either side to hold on. Again we gazed into the darkness not daring to venture further into the unknown. Its crazy to see here what lay just beyond what we saw that day, and to to think some poor fools risked it all for a glimpse at, well...wet rocks.
