Thanks for the great info.. Have a question. I have the same machine (dominator) and very happy with it. I am wanting to order a large contact wheel for hollow grinds. Wanting a 14"... how close are those tooling arm set handles to your 10" contact wheel? Wondering if a 14" will fit without hitting tooling arm tightening levers.. Any info clearance of yours would be very helpfull. Thank you!

Hey man, thanks for question! The 10” can get close, but you can set the end of the handles so the tip points away from the wheel, before putting the tooling arm on. I’d send more pics and measurements, but I’m currently out on the road for my main job for the next couple months. I also know OBM sells a different handle attachment option, but i dont have it so I can’t speak to if it would help this issue or not. What are you hoping to gain with a 14”? Honestly, I’ve been wanting yo go smaller in diameter from my 10” vs going bigger, but that just might be how I’m using the wheel. If you end up buying it, let me know what you find out. If not, I’ll try and add some more info to this comment when I’m back in my shop making sparks fly. Let me know if you have any other questions, Thanks again!

Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate it. I guess I will have to go with a 10" as OBM doesn't have much to say when asking them other than "We believe so"... To be honest I don't think they know if a 14" wheel will fit or not. A 14" wheel is too costly to go off of "We believe so" and end up putting it on a shelf because it won't fit. I will go with a different manufacturer for a dedicated 2x72 for hollow grinds with the larger wheel. 10" will work until then. As far as the 14", I have used several with a large wheel like that and it seems to be the sweet spot. I used a 14" serrated and a 14" smooth and liked them. Would like to try smaller than 10" as well too as you mentioned. Thanks again for answering..

I just got the exact same model. Do you also have a problem with the lock down handles for the upper and lower arm getting in the way of each other?

Hey man, i totally know what you’re referring to. I adjusted the handles after getting the tooling arms in place so that they wouldn’t hit when I loosen and tighten the tooling arms since they are like ratchets. So if you pull the black part of the handle out it will allow you to move the placement without tightening or loosening the tooling arm. Does that make sense? Hope that solves your problem.

Which model did you buy? I'm also a knife maker in Michigan and I'm looking to upgrade my awful 2x42 to something made for knives. Good video and thanks in advance for any info.

Hey Phillip, the one i got is the OBM dominator, it’s the one that flips to a horizontal grinder. I jumped from a 1x30 to this 2x72 and i couldn’t be happier about it. It’s a night and day difference! Where in Michigan are you located? Thanks for checking out the video, hopefully it gave you a little more information about the OBM grinder!

I'm trying to set aside money and your set up is almost exactly what I want except I also want to get an surface grinder attachment. I'm in Marysville Michigan but we are actually moving to Melvin by the end of summer. Melvin is just north of Yale if your familiar with that area.

So i bought the motor and VFD from OBM instead of another source that way i knew the motor and vfd were right for my Machine. Plus this meant i only had to pay for shipping once, which is the worst part of buying a grinder IMO. Both OBMs motors that they sell through their site come pre wired to the vfd which is so convenient so you can get grinding faster. Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks for watching!

I got the same grinder with the 7" drive wheel and 1 HP motor and VFD. I am using the flat tool test, non adjustable except for forward and back, having trouble getting it to fit when at 90 deg, any suggestions? BTW I love this grinder, i waited until I got a good grinder before spending my weekends in front of it. I didn't want too many bad habits to unlearn.

Robert thanks for you question, so sorry it has taken me (Matt) a couple days to respond! As Dave mentioned Ive had some trouble With my pro tool rest i purchased. That was apart of the original video but I cut it out and decided to do a focused video later on the tool rest and how we resolved the issue. If you want to send me any pics or videos of what your struggling with to [e-mail] I’d love to see what you’re running into and see if we can figure out as I’d love to include any tips/tricks we discover in the weekly update video. No worries at all if not. My suggestions: 1) shoot obm customer service an email, explain the issues and attach photos. I did about my tool rest and they immediately shipped out (free of charge) some new hardware they said would help. I’m waiting to install it all when we do the video. Ultimately, i think this grinder is newer and most people are buying the other model so there are still some bugs to be worked out and quirks to be learned. Even with the quirks I love this grinder and haven’t found any grinder with the same price tag and value that it brings especially with the rockstar customer service. Ultimately, if I don’t like my pro tool rest OBM said i could package it up nicely, ship it back to them, and they’d give me store Credit for it so i could try something else. Of course if you have any questions keep Posting them here so others can learn from them as well, but anything super in depth we can through email. I’m happy to help you any way I can!
