"Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Hero Mode" is a mod created for TTYD that features new characters, artwork, story components, battle mechanics, overworld puzzles, and more to the base game in order to freshen it up, create a more challenging experience, and make an expansion on what everybody loved about the second Paper Mario. in this video I checked out the latest version of the Hero Mode Mod, which now includes Chapter 2!

For anyone confused about the Don Pianta plot at the end, Bowser and Kammy went to Don asking for help with finding Princess Peach. Don claimed he knew where she was, but asked for them to, as Bowser put it, "find these two tree stumps and dish out punishment!" in exchange for the information. I doubt he intended for Bowser to actually kill his daughter, but rather he wanted to use fear tactics to scare the two of them into breaking up. He "suggested" the two of them go on a picnic together, then told them he felt ill and couldn't go with, and then finally gave Bowser the go-ahead to storm in once he knew they would be alone. Frankie honestly trusted Don and didn't believe he'd ever backstab him like that, but Francesca saw through it. I imagine she's seen him plot out schemes like this before when taking out opponents or getting back at people he doesn't like, and she recognized the same patterns here. After all, not only was Bowser was targeting _them_ specifically, he also knew _exactly_ when and where to strike. There was only one way a random warlord from a far off land could have possibly known about the picnic - Don had to be behind it. Francesca was right - he mainly asks Mario to check up on them to see how much terror he caused, to make sure Bowser actually did his job. Though he may have also wanted to make sure Bowser didn't go _too_ far... And as for why he sent Mario instead of his own men, Frankie is one of his associates. So if the other associates found out about the way he was treating Frankie, it could really easily shatter their loyalty towards him, which would be too huge of a risk for Don to take. Though when all was said and done, he had not only failed to break Frankie and Francesca apart, but he had also completely broken his daughter's trust in him. Selfishly, he tried to keep her to himself by ruling her with an iron fist. And yet, in a cruel irony, his efforts were the very thing that drove her away...

Bro wrote a whole essay about lore that may not even be right lmao I definitely interpreted it as Don Pianta actually being genuinely confused because he didn't make any such plot. Besides, why would he talk so much about how he "approves of their relationship" and how Frankie is like a son to him? Even to try and sell a lie, that just seems excessive. I think for sure there's something else going on there--it seems like Reed may be setting up for the true villain of the game to be Dimentio from SPM, and we know Dimentio can transform into other people, so perhaps he disguised himself as Don Pianta to send Bowser off with some kind of ulterior motive. Reed is probably setting up for this plot to have some kind of larger pay-off when the Don Pianta stuff comes back after Chapter 5

@@itsmeike​ Yup, that's what a deep love of a story's mystery will do to you, lol I'd agree that it could have been an impostor impersonating Don, but what gets me is the way Francesca said "No Frankie! He's been doing this for a while now, you can see it in his sorry face!" It implies this isn't the _first_ time he's tried to meddle in her life like this, and she's just fed up with it. It struck me as very odd that her first thought was to go "wait... wait a minute, my dad is behind this, isn't he!" in the first place, but if this has been happening for a while now, the fact that she jumped to that conclusion actually makes so much sense. There's also the line of "Go! Do what you want! Even if it means gettin' married!" And yes, I know that's a line from the base game, but it's still an admittance that, on some level, he doesn't want to see them get married. It shows he has the motive, and it shows he was lying about it when he told us it "doesn't bother him". Reed could have easily changed that if it didn't fit the story, but he chose to leave it as-is on purpose. Though, I do agree, _something_ weird is going on at a grand scale. I just don't believe it's impersonation... between the "paranoia" section, the cursed book, and TEC's comment in chapter 1 of "it feels like we are not even on a 'world' ", the weirdness feels like it's on a universal scale rather than an individual one. But, you're right, I could 100% be wrong. And that's the most fun part about theory crafting! Being wrong! 😂 I'm just excited to see how things play out.

The infinity money part gave me the idea of a super boss shop keeper (like Kekleon in Pokémon mystery dungeon) that only fights you if you abuse a very obvious infinite money trick in a shop, and it would be totally on brand for this mod

If I recall correctly, the "Allergic" status condition is the rarest status condition in TTYD. Nobody in the game references it, and no enemy inflicts it. I think you can only get it by eating Space Food, and even then it's not a 100% chance. For sure the most obscure status condition in the base game of TTYD. You can go through the entire game and likely never get it. fyi, as frequently you play TTYD for your content, I'm assuming you already know all this. This comment is moreso meant for your viewers to read than directed at you, as most people who played TTYD probably doesn't know this rare status condition is in the base game

I love the way the Piantas are being handled From what I understand, Francesca thinks her father sent Bowser to Petalburg to murk Frankie while they were on their picnic, then sent mario to see if the job got done. Frankie is just some poor idiot who loves her and thinks his boss still likes him, not getting that the man just sent a hitman after him. Bowser also misunderstood the directive anf thought he was supposed to kill them both, which never gets brought up ans makes it a bit more confusing, which makes sense for why Frankie is confused.

the dimentio and frankly theories are both quite interesting. When the puny elder was describing giving mario the star "pure heart" was in red, but I'm not sure if that is the same in vanilla. If the frankly twist does happen, it would be interesting to see it revealed at the point where doopliss normally tricks you while disguised as frankly

Beldam being transphobic was part of the original japanese version of thousand year door. Beldam always refers to Vivian with masculine pronouns while everyone else used feminine

True. Also in the original, it says Vivian is "actually a boy" in the pause menu. The original Japanese understanding is closer to a crossdresser/femboy than a trans person. In the original English the issue was removed entirely, while in the remake English it's been changed to be about gender identity, not crossdressing/femboy. But not in other versions. So you can pick your canon.

I love this mod. The music choice is great I really like the character changes and that he made Vivian actually trans instead of our speculations whether or not Vivian is. I definitely think Dimentio and some part of the Super Paper Mario villains are in the future, and i almost think...maybe Dimentio is the reason why there is a 'Hero Mode.' It sounds like Reed's story implies the original TTYD happened but for some reason Hero Mode is having it hapoen again...but changed, and i almost wonder if this is post-Super Paper Mario too. Now that I've finished watching this, I'll comment properly with the "knowledge" I got from finishing watching the video: I suggest you wait for more Hero Mode to be finished in development. TTYD remake is two months later (at time of posting) and there's surely more TTYD mods out there or challenges you could do. I think it's too early to dive into the level 0 challenge since the dev of this mod only has the story up to chapter 2
