I had a very similar golf swing years ago; prior to an injury and surgery. Since I couldn't play golf for a season, I watched way too many KZbin videos. No one (until now) suggested this type of swing was Okay. So when I began playing again, I attempted the traditional swing yet once again (No Thanks!). Literally, Thank God, I stumbled upon this video - giving me the confidence that there was nothing "wrong" with my old swing. I practiced your method during my warm-up bucket today, and it was like meeting an old friend again. I played well today with great ball contact with added distance on my irons. After getting comfortable with the swing again on the front 9 - I shot a 38 on the back 9 (7 pars & 2 bogeys). TIP: I find it difficult to focus on club position, yet I find it very easy to know where my hands are. I simply focus on Thumbs UP on the backswing & Thumbs UP to the finish. It makes it feel so natural without much thinking about the swing plane. Thanks from Tampa, FL

I think this is really going to help me after yesterday's round! I am one of your experienced golfers and although I am an advocate of the VLS, that doesn't mean that sometimes I don't I stray away from it. I think yesterday was that day. My backswing was below the "red line" and I was hitting a lot of "fat" shots because of my lack of rotation! I will definitely try to remember the "red line" in the future! Also, I am archiving this video for future reference. Good Job Todd in helping me out!

Hi Todd, Peter from Argentina here, another great tip as you always do deliver. Last month I played with my great friend David Comstock from TX, who was so impressed with my game now after watching your videos, he decided to suscribe as well and told me that already after just 2 weeks he has noticed improvement in his game. Thanks again Todd, really nice to play good golf with your tips and lessons !!!

Hi Todd. Neil here from Fernie BC. Our courses haven’t opened yet so I escaped to Mexico for a few rounds. I’ve been watching your videos. Very simple and easy to understand instruction. I’m working on a more upright swing. I don’t wear a glove but I try to keep my watch on my lead wrist pointing at the ball during the first part of my takeaway then going more vertical. It works! Longer and straighter shots. Thanks.

I like it to some degree, just don't over do it as it can lead to improper face positions.

Hi Todd just watched Liv golf live here in Adelaide Australia, was amazed how far forward pro,s had the ball for iron shots, do you recommend this for amateurs Enjoy all your golfing advice
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
Good question, we like to see the ball slightly forward of center for most irons. The real key is proper movement of weight/pressure on the feet. This is a cornerstone of the Vertical Line Swing. I cover this in detail in my book, The Bad Lie.

Todd, I am in Hudson Wisconsin, and we have been playing in our area about three weeks. I like the vertical line swing, but the longer the club, the harder it is for me to swing this way. Do you have video's of hybrids and three, five, seven and even my new nine wood? Mark G.
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
You bet, here's one using a hybrid to help fix coming over the top: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWilp4aIna52a7s This move should help you with hitting longer clubs like hybrids and fairway woods. Hope the info helps Mark!

Thanks Todd, Jaroslaw from Poland again here, good “secret” tip that I totally agree with, it helps! Can you show something on how hands are working from the top of the backswing in order to shallow the club and ensure the max swing radius at the same time? For example, are you initially pushing them “away” in the opposite direction to the target? What is the secret there to ensure good start from the top every time? Thanks J

Welcome Jaroslaw! You may be one of our first from Poland, great to have you. How long is the golf season there? Yes, will be sure to add this to the content list. @@USGOLFTVshow hi Todd, the season in Poland lasts most of the year, with the exception of a few months in winter, but it also depends on the weather. I have your book and read it, but I don't remember it saying anything about the aspect that interests me. I try to push my dominant hand in the opposite direction and behind me which helps me get a radius but also to shallow the club. If you could discuss/show this aspect that would be great. Best J
@mikerodrick2430 Жыл бұрын
Getting the hands higher can also cause an over the top swing & a resulting slice if you don't shallow the club from the top which is the most common issue for high handicappers. Nicklaus & Couples had high hands but they had a flying elbow & played a fade.

Allan Patrick again - I thought I had the VLS pretty grooved in and could go through the bag hitting everything solid but the shanks crept in and the last 4 times at the range I've hit virtually all the balls thin across the ground or shanks dead left. Looking at this video I realize I have been inadvertently taking the club inside at the top as I try to get enough hip rotation. I've been trying to rotate the hips more like you said but I realize I've been taking the club inside as a result. This must be why I have become so totally lost from the top. Keeping the hands above the red line does seem to help swinging on the mat at home. Will this tweak help or is there another drill video you recommend?

Allan Patrick - You have recommended in several recent videos to let the shaft drop a little at transition before weight shift. First there was a video suggesting this with the drive, and a later video suggested this with all clubs. Have I misunderstood you? This is not mentioned in "The Bad Lie". In the book it is briefly described at transition that the club drops a little, but it is not as emphasized as in your recent videos.
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
Allan, good question. The club drop is not something we talk about a lot as we feel it should happen naturally if the pivot is correct.
@allanpatrick4105 Жыл бұрын
Allan Patrick - So we are to drop the shaft slightly below the line before the weight shift and downswing? Makes sense and may help my timing; keep me from coming down too quick from the top.

How can you avoid a body arm disconnect if the arms go straight back and up while the body is rotating?
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
Steve, think in term where the top of your arm connects to your side or chest. Keeping these to connected is what you want. Hope that helps.
@leonberkowitz8769 Жыл бұрын
Hi Todd I really don’t agree with you on this point by getting your hands higher in the backswing. Most amateurs lift their arms and hands in the backswing and get too steep causing all sorts of issues . Swinging straight back can cause what’s called rocking and blocking as the late great John Jacobs called it. He told Jack Nicklaus who disagreed with him during the Ryder Cup many years ago as Jack had an upright swing with a bit of a flying elbow. The European team won that year. As golf is a rotational game you have to swing your hands towards your right pocket to keep it on or under your shoulder plane ala Ben Hogsn analogy of the pane of glass. Once you lift you are in serious trouble as your arms then have to drop in the slot before you turn which is too hard for us mortals. In my opinion much easier for us experienced golfers to set up with flared feet to help our turns.
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the perspective, thanks. We find that most golfers take the arms too in and around on the backswing thinking it will help them swing from the "inside" on the downswing. However, this combined with their lack of body rotation is what promotes the outward movement of the handle in the downswing in our experience. In simple terms, we like to see the arms take the club back and up and the body rotation take the club around. The combination of these two is what produces the best backswing position in our opinion.
@leonberkowitz8769 Жыл бұрын
@@USGOLFTVshow So are you saying that most amateurs would benefit from a more vertical backswing getting their hands and arms higher ? Too me that sound’s like too much compensations in the downswing. A one plane swing arms being on or below your shoulder plane in my view is easier to replicate, getting your club path to automatically shallow in the downswing coming in to out .This may not get as much distance for us older players but it’s better than looking for your ball all day in the woods.
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
@@leonberkowitz8769 good conversation. The club never swings on one plane, that is a misconception that many golfers have. The club and arms are always changing...we find it best to be more vertical with the arms with good hip and shoulder rotation, this is the key match up.

but higher the hands are in the back swing and proner is the swing to come over the top. Stefano from the .....land of the next Ryder Cup
@USGOLFTVshow Жыл бұрын
Good question, if the transition is good the club will naturally drop into the slot. The key is proper weight shift early in the downswing. I cover this in detail in my book, The Bad Lie. You can find it on Amazon if interested in learning www.badliegolfbook.com/
