I did collision repair for over 30 years! This is practically the same method that I used and the only way to do it however for the sake of strength and to give the Weld a backing I will put a 2 inch piece of the new quarter panel inside lapped under the skin on each side of the joint. Especially at the rocker.

I used to make up a fillet to go inside between the two panels where it butts up, then weld it together. Helped stop heat distortion. Quick grind off. Perfect finish every time. I did this work ( body and paint) for 25 years. 6 days a week. 12 to 15 hours a day. I got so prolific it wasn't unusual for me to be working on 8 cars at a time. Getting them ready for my guys when they came in the next morning to get them in the booth for paint. Didn't do my marriage any good however.

Short, simple, and to the point. 👍. Looks simple enough until you have to do it. It requires a sharp blade and a steady hand when cutting. The blade can be purchased any day of the week but the steady hand…that takes time and experience to make something difficult look easy.

Gap is a little big. The best way is cut the new quarter where it needs to be. Then over lay it and scribe a line with a sharpe object. Cut the panel and debur both panels. Youll then have a super tight gap. As for the techs that say to use a Backer. Im against it as it doesnt allow cavity wax to get between the backers. If its a butt weld then youll be able to spray it with cavity wax. Most of the time procedures say Butt weld only. I forget what they call a butt weld with a backer, i think its called a "fillet" remember seeing it on the symbol sheet for a quarter i just finished up.

I used a similar tecnic to cut a board of wood to fit a especific hole. Bigger board that covers the entire hole and then cut both. I cut it on a 45º angle in order for the board on the wall not to fall inside the wall. In metal, that won't help you. Maybe make three cuts and tack weld the cut corners. Then finish the cut.

Good job hear in Australia we have to remove the panel at the original join seems and spot welds cut and shut jobs like this are illegal the was to many bodgers doing bad work and car's would break in two in an accident so it was outlawed you would need to reinforce the joint and get an engineer report if you want to do it this way even a chop top needs to have a engineer report before it can go back on the road it makes custom work a lot more difficult to do hear and much more expensive for the customer

I prefer to use panel bond adhesive with a series of backing strips glued to the underside of one side. The backing strips are 1 5/8” wide, leaving a 3/4” flange on each side of the gap. This is clamped using aircraft Cleco Clamps through 1/8” drilled holes. Then glue on the new panel by laying it onto the flange created by the backing strip. Then fill holes with more adhesive. This creates a super strong double thickness joint that has zero warp, no sparks and is completely watertight.

Hi there, the repair is well done, BUT, modern high carbon steels should not be welded, but the gap should be sleeved and MIG (CuSi) brazed. A complete weld over that distance makes the panel weak. In a next crash it will crumble there (the seam) or rip off. Trie yourself, make a weld with two modern metals (high carbon steel) and do the same thing now sleeving the seam and MIG brazing it. Than trie to tear both panels, you will be surprised..... ; ) Keep on hammering...
@AUTOBODYTECH
@AUTOBODYTECH 5 ай бұрын
I've always wanted to learn MIG brazing. I disagree that it will crumble or rip off in the next accident, all though MIG welding does cause it to become more brittle. There are other manufacturers such as BMW that glue their quarter panel section with a backing plate and this is considered safe. Thanks for sharing!

I’m thinking of buying the Milwaukee M12 Bandfile and just wondering what ah batteries you’re using and how many spotwelds you can grind on each charge? Are you grinding with a 60 grit band? Thanks

@user-gc7hz9hk1v I recommend the tool. I plan to do a review soon. I love the tool, but it's definitely a battery hog!! I use 3ah and 6ah m12s with 50 grit
