The best class that I ever had in college was one where we had to come prepared as if we were teaching the class. I've tried to follow the same philosophy in flying and other elements of my life. It has served me well. Thanks for the video.

Notebook from day 1 plus I use old photo album books for quick view/flash card references. Great pocket reference. I really format things into data tables.. airspace, tower light's, etc. Plus ref charts for Press Alt, etc.

I would love to know where Flying magazine was finding $100/hr rentals!

Agreed. The article didn’t say how they came up with the numbers-whether they were from a specific area, a national average, or what. I used them as an example, because they are generally trustworthy, and it was one of the few references I could find that seemed to use consistent numbers for their estimates. Thanks for the comment!

They are all bogus numbers to attract customers.

Agreed - Here in SoCal the cheapest is more around $160/wet and $85/CFI - I just finised PPL and I ended up 100hrs and $30k

Wow. Thanks for sharing. That is definitely a bit more than $100.00 per hour...

Great video. I would follow this up with get involved with your local aviation community whether at your the flight school or local FAA team meeting (wings). Learning from the experience of others and talking through those situation with your flight community is even cheaper than a notebook. It’s free!

Or go learn to fly gliders. Cheaper and fun. Usually free flight instruction at most clubs.

Here in Canada we have Cessna going for 200hrly. My instructor is 95$hrly and she is class 4. More expensive for more higher class instructor. What holds me together is knowing that my salary one day will pay off all of my investments so I don’t worry about the debt haha

My first 37 hours were spaced out 1 flight a week and with a shit cfi compared to my second cfi. CFI and student connection plays a big role. I will checkride in 2 weeks. Am exactly 19,000$ deep in already and that is without counting foreflight, ipad, bose a30, flight bag, far aim, book, online course, stratus. So technically ill be with checkride cost anmd all close to 25-26k in for my first license if included the equipment. Doubble my expected budget but the first 37h contributed to that since I flew 1 time a week with a shit cfi and I barely had time or prepared since work was demanding 60-70hrs a week so money was compensating the bleed out from the other end. Now jobless and studying not so consistently because I suck at it and with nice good cfi took another 50hrs. My guess is if youre young and fresh and your mind is right and your brain overload is not yet of an adult with all the problems and your motor skills and studying skills are on point you can breeze through this in 12k or less if you hack around it with cheaper gadets or you are light enough to ride a c150 savings can be INSANE. But if all odds against you in other words if your mind is running like the airplane performs on a 100 degree day with 90% humidity then brace your chase and bank of america for impact because you will watch the drain, specially if you get high anxiety studying like me. Good luck kiddos! never give up no matter what it takes just go get it is all about getting there anyways your skills will be far more valuable than 10 +/- thousands of dollars and xyz. After having mastered these skills better now I expect my IFR to be substantially lower. Wish me luck. PS: first 37hr the plane was 200/hr and 70/hr instructor. Second plane was 155/hr and 35/hr Instructor. Thats a 33% Discount so yeah I got raped superhardddd. All I can tell you is I do not even miss the glass pannel for shit at least not for the PPL will see IFR. I loveee my gyros and instructor as well. That first guy really hussled me like a champ but that is fine live and learn. Seee ya!

Love the idea of keeping a flying journal to compliment your logbook and to aid in learning. This is the second time i've heard it mentioned. Heard it first from Hoover on his channel Pilot Debrief.

Thanks. I’ve found it to be tremendously helpful. And, I often refer back to it-both as a pilot and as a CFI. I love Hoover’s channel, too. Lot’s of really good information!
