As much as I can remember, the Toy Story 3 game from 2010 got phenomonal praise as being the best video game adaptation of all these characters. Like, much higher praise of a video game based on Toy Story anyone would think. As for the difficulty of this game, I personally think this was one of those games made when the Video Game rental scene was still relevant, and the harder the game, the more people had to rent if if they wanted it long enough to see the ending.

I literally watched the first two movies with my Mum last week. Such a fun trip down memory lane. Thanks for this relevantly-timed review! I played the second game as a kid on PS1, so I look forward to seeing that being reviewed as well! That Woody "jumpscare" where he hides under your couch, though... I thought he was gonna jump at you and try to kill you by the end of the review, but nah, nothing happened. Is that being saved for the next review or what?

Your videos are so underrated, you definitely deserve more views and subs! Also, i heard the reason why so many old games were so damn hard or even unfair at points, was because of space on the cartridges. They couldn't hold a lot of memory, so the game length on most of them weren't that long. So they made a lot of them freaking hard to lengthen the game. Thats the reason, but i don't think its an excuse for some old games. Like this one. Lol

That's the reason the first Ecco the Dolphin was made so insanely difficult. They didn't want kids to rent the game and beat it in a weekend. I have beaten Ecco 1 and actually quite like it, but honestly checkpoints would really improve the game. It's really easy to die, and having to start over every time is just painful. I think the Sega CD version has checkpoints but I haven't had a chance to try that one yet.

great vid man! a bit late to the party, (im bad at watching people's vids on time bleh) but i would like to mention a few things: 1. i'm glad you mentioned that there is a password system in the PAL version, i've seen a good chunk of reviews for this game not mention that at all (tbf they were american reviewers but still) 2. The way to earn continues (also more health/lives for that matter) is to collect all of the stars in a level, if you collect all of the stars in a level, you get an extra life. if you miss a couple of them, you get an extra health point. once you collect 300 stars in total, you get a continue, rinse and repeat. (this is EXTREMELY helpful for beating the game, I WISH THEY TOLD US THIS IN THE GAME) 3. the SNES version is so much worse. god. I'm kinda surprised you didn't look at that one as well but I'm glad you stuck with the Mega Drive version. The SNES version has really bad collision issues with Woody's spaghetti string, you have to be EVEN MORE PRECISE IN THE SNES VERSION, i can see where you didn't like it in the MD version, but god you have to be PIXEL perfect to do it correctly in the SNES version, same thing goes for climbing across ropes/chains, it's horrible 4. i am so sorry you played the gameboy port i personally love the Mega Drive Toy Story game, i dig the different gameplay styles (some of my favorite games are Earthworm Jim and Battletoads im such a sucker for this stuff) and the music is pretty damn good, especially in the later half. The difficulty, is definitely a big issue with the game i will admit, and the fact that they shipped this game in North America without a password system is criminal

One of my biggest gaming accomplishments was beating this as a kid on the SNES with no password system in the North American version. The game also looks way better on SNES with gorgeous colours, no weird sepia tone like on the Genesis. You might be too young to remember this Jak, but back when this game came out games were really hard for the most part so that kids couldn't beat them in one rental from the video store. And I guess this worked, cause I failed and failed to beat this game when I rented it and it wasn't until I got the game as a birthday present that I beat it after months of mastering it.

I nearly finished it as a child, so it was not that difficult. You are probably too young to remember games from that era which were way more difficult than this, like "The Lion King" or "The Adventures of Batman and Robin" :D Also, graphically speaking I think is a pretty good game.

You know... this might be the very first game I ever played. By the time I was born my dad had a neat little colletion of Genesis Games. Spider-Man, Altered Beasts, Primal Rage, Sonic 3D Blast, among others. I remember one day, probably back at 1998 or 1999, my cousin cauth me playing Sonic 3D Blast and my 3/4 year old ass tried to show off my "3D" game. Then she brought me to her house (back then we lived on the same street) and showed me Snow Go on Crash 2, the first time I ever saw or even heard of a PlayStation... my mind was possitively blown.

I played the PC version of this game, and yes, it really is THAT hard. In fact, I ended up having a guide by Disney Interactive faxed to me (thanks to my aunt for letting me use her fax machine). Even though the PC version was pretty good, I still envied those with Super Nintendo or SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive consoles because the "Really Inside The Claw Machine" level was exclusive to them. I agree with you on Nightmare Buzz. I think what makes him so scary is: 1) You don't expect a boss fight in a game like this (especially as early as stage 4), and 2) The music gives you the chills. Plus his moves are hard to predict. The lasso mechanics of this game are so bad that in a way, this just feels like a poor man's version of Super Castlevania IV. I did manage to beat this game back in the day, but probably wouldn't have if it weren't for the fact that the PC version had...a level select window.

Nice to see you back in action with a new review. Gotta admit that I wasn't expecting it to be Toy Story but I'm all for it. I actually remember playing a little of this game on the PC way back in the day and I never got far in it. I think the furthest I ever got was the toy grab machine section lol. Seeing this game is super nostalgic for sure but also because I remember that the advertised this game a lot on VHS Disney movies haha. Anyway great review. I saw someone else mention that this review felt like a return to form of the AVGN inspired videos and I agree, the ending gag got a good laugh outta me, I was not expecting that haha. Makes me wonder if you'll ever experiment with in the field live action goofs again, those were fun but I'm also aware that it may have not been good on the physically plus all the random things that can happen that can ruin a shot and for that, I totally understand if you prefer keeping things a bit more simpler this time around. Anyway, looking forward to the next one!

I had the PC port of this growing up (yes that exists) and its one of the few childhood "hard" games I was able to beat. The PC version straight up has a level select menu that you can fully unlock by cheating (figured it out randomly so idk how it actually works) and because of that anytime I got stuck on a level I would just skip to the next one. I think there were maybe 6 levels in the entire game I was able to complete successfully, the rest of them I skipped. I remember being able to beat the first two levels, the RC car level where you smack into buzz, the level running away from scud, and the last 2 levels. the PC port is really weird though. If I remember correctly it has the best visuals but they're not like improved, they're just in a better color palette. I also think it's missing a handful of levels, although I'm not 100% sure since I'm going completely off of memory. It's probably worth looking into a little bit.

Since you’re reviewing Toy Story games this month, I’d like to see you review “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.” The video game based on the cartoon spinoff of Toy Story. Despite the impressive Cell shading, this game does have a punishing time limit on how you have to race the boss to the end of the stage as well as collecting the Little Green Men and parts for Buzz’s robot member XR. It does have impressive quotes from Buzz (voiced by Patrick Warburton of course).

I had the PC version that would let you select any level as long as you had beaten the previous level(s) first. I'm not sure if it was a glitch or intentional but I could skip the Claw boss and the second level in Sid's bedroom if I wanted to. I was never able to beat either level so I'm glad that the option was there. Bizarrely, the PC version had the Mega Drive/Genesis exclusive level but it didn't have the 'Doom' level for whatever reason.

Honestly looking at the gameplay and Jak's description of playing the Toy Story 1 game, I can already see some things that could've been improved upon, for one the animation for Woody's Pull String Whip is definitely as awful as it is, I figure if you made it so without directional input, Woody would whip around himself, with directions he would strike in that direction and have a pretty wide reach perfect for attacking enemies and using the grapple points, also simply giving Woody a Ledge Grab would solve some of the issues of missing a platform as well as updating some of the textures to tell the player I can grab this, like simply if it looks solid then you can grab/land on that platform, either way there seems to be a base of a fun game there somewhere, with a few tweeks it could actually be fun, possibly as a Rom Hack of sorts. Either way I'm very happy to see Jak to play the Toy Story 1 game cause it definitely is this enigma of why is this as not talked about as the second movie's game, speaking of which he's gonna talking about that next and dude it's gonna be a good time.

The graphics are better on the SNES version, as well as the music but it's because the SNES not only were released later than the Genesis/Mega Drive but it was superior when it came to graphics and sounds (although it had a couple of weaknesses, such as some games lagged due to limits of how many sprites could be shown at once before dragging it down, such as Super R-Type and Gradius).

I wouldn't be surprised that the reason of the game being hard is cause Disney demanded to be hard due to the people that rent the game during the time wouldn't be able to finish it, and those people would be forced to buy the game instead, was a typical practice to some companies to reduce the Blockbuster videogame rentals, still sadly cause this game had potential, one thing that I find cool is that the SNES version has a little trick, when you duck in one of the drawers of the first level, you get unlimited health until the end of the game, and also an option to pause the game and press select to skip the entire level and continue in the next one. Why this is Snes exclusive specific? Idk, but is very helpful, would be great to know about it before hand though.

my favourite Megadrive game up to this day. Visually way ahead of it's time, extremely variable with gameplay genres, music is lit, and the difficulty? Well, just gotta git gud, as with most 8bit/16 bit games of that time. Luckily there are passwords to skip level or have invincibility to train levels as much as you want, which I did a lot as a kid. Now, as 33 years old, i replay this gem twice a year without any issues and grateful that my dad presented this game to me and showed what's good gaming is.

Your lucky. Here in America we don’t have the password system. Also good review

“You might get so mad at Toy Story that you may want to slam Doom into your Super NES and take out your anger by shooting a bunch of evil aliens. Then again, Doom is an extremely difficult game, so it might just make the problem worse.” -George Wood, 1995

I believe older games were harder so you would have to keep renting them in order to beat them. Back in the day when Blockbuster and Hollywood Video were still a thing, and kids rented games, the developer made the games harder so kids wouldn't beat them in a few days.

Yup, and it hardened our nerves of steel, the most abused generation of them all. XD ... Well I dunno, the zoomers seem to be bad at problem solving and troubleshooting despite being on phones all day...

It's sad, but true relating to Zoomers, I wouldn't say all of them though.

I had really fond memories of this game as a kid. Maybe I need to revisit it now and see how much BS my kid self put up with.

Old games were hard because if they weren't, you would beat them in less than an hour and feel ripped off by how little content they had. I know, there are rare exceptions. This stopped being an issue by the time the PS2 came since games were already 8 hours long or more without the difficulty.
