Melissa Cross is a classically trained singer and actress. But it’s her work with metal bands that’s the reason for her success, and her nom de guerre: the “Queen of Scream.” The 60-year-old has worked with some of the biggest names in hardcore, from Slipknot to Slayer and Megadeth. As America’s heavy bands hit the road this summer, Cross is in demand--and takes VICE News backstage at the Vans Warped Tour stop in San Antonio.

She was somewhat right, but also not altogether right. To say metal is not "tainted" like pop is not true; I read interviews by metal artists who quit the scene because labels would limit their artistic liberty by telling them how they are supposed to sound to sell records. "That's metal; that's not metal"... The industry is not as heartless like pop but but it's still an industry.

@@danksamosa3952 vocal folds is more proper in my experience (5 years studio ) I think i confuses people to call them cords but most people who listen and don't play or participate say otherwise. Her breathing methods are solid you always want just enough air not to much or to little when you scream, you also don't want to push it out with your throat because back pressure will hurt your folds you want to use a steady stream of air and if you need to mute yourself between screams close your mouth it'll just go out of your nose ezpz. I've done screaming for 6 bands so far, working on getting another one together though really soon.

You like Metal? Then, don't debate over what is metal or is not. Listen to Chuck Schuldiner : "I don't want to preach, but I would like to see metal become more of a united thing. I'm tired of people breaking things down into categories like thrash metal and death metal. I think people tend to stick to one category, and I want people to support all kinds of bands, whether it be Slayer or Queensryche or Death. I miss the days when it was acceptable to listen to everything from Priest and Maiden to Slayer and Venom."

"Metal" is broken down into hundreds of sub-genres; however they generally are still referred to as simply "metal" because most people who don't listen don't understand, so it's easier to just say something is metal. Metal as a whole is still an underrated and niche category of music, we should be trying to spread the love and experience to others instead of fighting amongst ourselves over meaningless sub-genre details. Treat it like the pit, don't swing your arms, only involve those who want to be involved and pick your brothers up if they fall; we should be uniting and not fighting. Stay classy brothers and see you in the pit. \m/

@@liamaldrich2476 Yup. Unfortunately the screaming on those first three albums sound better to me than anything after. Once he started trying to do things properly it lost a lot of the rawness and emotion which made me love it. From the Self Titled and Iowa where he’s just ripping his vocal cords apart. To Vol 3 where he’s just unnaturally raising the pitch of his voice. Now it feels like the screaming has lost a lot of the feeling it used to have. Almost like it’s more of an instrument than it is an emotion.
