One detail I love is that during the flashbacks with Flamme, their clothes and the architecture are all Greco-Roman style instead of medieval like the rest of the series, because it takes place 1000 years earlier.

Something I really love about the fights in this show is that even though every fight has a winner and a loser, the loser never looks weak. Qual, Draht, Luegner, Linie, and Aura: you get the distinct sense that any one of them could have easily defeated Stark, Fern, or even Frieren if the latter weren't on their game. (I mean, Qual actually DID defeat the hero's party 80 years ago.) It's an incredible feat of writing to make the protagonists feel overwhelmingly powerful AND still make the dangers and antagonists of this world feel genuinely lethal at the same time.

"Sousou no Frieren" is written as 「葬送のフリーレン」, and the meaning of those letters are: 葬 = funeral 送 = send At first, everyone thought it should mean "Fireren's funeral attendance", because it's the story of an Elf outliving all her friends. Then, at some point, is actually revealed to mean "Frieren the undertaker/slayer" (because she sends her enemies to their own funerals). Having a deceiving double meaning in the title, and then revealing the true meaning of the title in the middle of a season is becoming a trend in anime.

Demons will hide their magic from lesser prey, but they define themselves by whose mana is greatest and magic most skilled. When they face a mage, they HAVE to flex that mana and establish dominance. Flamme, Frieren, and now Fern refuse to play by those rules, and they treat demons like lesser enemies. That's why these demons are so shook to find out what's happening. It turns their whole view of the world on its head.

The UTTER disrespect for an enemy that you not merely hate, but LOATHE is why Frieren's name translates to "Frozen." There's cold-blooded, and then there's Frieren. Even JJK had more consideration for their opponents.

When you realise that Frieren didn't just defeat Aura by not doing anything, but that she defeated her by stopping doing something instead.
@wrexgrafix847 ай бұрын
It’s funny how despite how amazing Fern and Stark’s fight was (especially with the animation) in episode 9, you talked so excitedly about Frieren’s cold execution of Aura. That’s how amazing the storytelling is in Frieren… whether it’s the slice of life episodes, the sad and heartwarming episodes, action-packed fight scenes, or dramatic buildup like in Episode 10, every episode is so well done. 25:44 “I wanna know how Stark is.” I’m sorry, but Stark died from his injuries … Fern doesn’t have healing magic, so all she did was use her spell to look under his clothes… 😜 30:48 “Sou Sou no Frieren” 「曹操のフリーレン」 (pronounced like “so-so no Frieren”) is the original Japanese tittle, and normally it means “Frieren of the Funerals” as it shows her having to see the deaths of her companions in her long life. But for the demons, it means she’s seeing them off to their deaths, which is why they translated it as “Frieren the Slayer.” It’s also like saying “Frieren the Undertaker.” If you’re a demon, she’ll kill you in the ring, a jail cell, a wide field, a demon king’s castle, wherever. ^_^

Your point about slice of life vs. action is definitely hitting on something. The way I think about it is that this is a slice of life story, but that slice just happens to involve some fighting. And the cool thing about the fights is that they're not separate from the rest of the story. It's not like many action shows, where the plot gets put on hold so we can do some cool action scenes, and then go back to the plot. Regardless of whether they're slaying demons, shopping for birthday presents, or searching for flowers, the story is always told in the same way.

They don't have strong romantic feelings or reproductive drives. Like most elves in classic fiction. Enough to create a few children over the course of millenia, but could you imagine a world in which individual elves have children every few years for millenia? About the title, Sousou no Frieren (葬送のフリーレン) is ambiguous. Sousou means sending someone off, funeral rites, etc. but apparently it can also mean to kill violently. To slay.
