She will never reach her goal, because the goal is not the object. It's the chase. Her wanderlust has taken her many places, and will take her many more. An interesting point of view. I'm an older retired fellow with much wilderness adventures behind me. One thing I realized many years ago is there appear to be two basic personalities in those who go adventuring. One set is the goal oriented type. Achieving the summit of the mountain is paramount to them, not doing so is a total failure. The other set of folks is all about the journey, the adventure along the way. For this group the summit is a plus and if events (weather for example) prevent achieving an end goal, well that's okay. I was always in the second group. There's some cross-over, some blending between these two types of adventurers but not much in my experience.

Ferries are different, I guess. The ferries I have taken were designed for vehicles to drive on at one end and drive off at the other end. First on was also first off.

Many ferries are RoRo these days, meaning first vehicle on = first vehicle off.

Most of the big European ferry lines like in Greece, Italy, Spain, Baltics, etc don't use small ferries that have two way entrances (we call them flip flops :P ) because they are very unreliable in any kind of weather above 5 Bft so they have closed off ferry boats with a single entrance in the back as it is the only protected place against weather and can travel up to 8 Bft. Flip flops with 2 way entrances are only used in water crossings in Greece of less than 10 km such as Euboia, Rio and the Saronic gulf. But anywhere with a crossing of open sea you enter from the back and go out from the back.@@TexasVernon

7:30 The Defender body (but not the mechanical parts) dates from 1958 and is purely designed to be utilitarian, comfort didn't enter into their thinking when they designed it. The designers in 1950s Birmingham probably thought ergonomics was some sort of fancy foreign food. I think of it as a small truck rather than a large car so as not to have such high expectations.

I love your interactions with Vilk! You are very lucky to have such an amazing partner on your adventures. :) As for being out at sea, the sea is my church, my form of meditation which comes effortlessly. Some people feel nervous or anxious on a boat, many feel sea sick...I on the other hand, never feel better than when I'm sailing. It's something undescribable, the feeling of such complete and utter peace, contentment, inner bliss. I imagine that's what you feel like when you're running. When talking about sea sickness. I was traveling with my fellow students from Helsinki to Gdansk by ferry in autumn 1985. Storm called Manta hit us in the baltic sea coming from south and heading to the north. It was so awful. Later we read that wind was about 30 m/s in its peak. You just lay in your bunk. Couldn't move, eat or drink nothing. Just try some water and the toilet was calling! No ceiling, no floor, no nothing, just that centrifuge stage on and on! I really do love water element in smaller scale, but no ferries over seas after that episode 😅 Have a nice voyage up north! Couldness ought to be quite tolerable for few days ahead!

Likewise, I have a dreadful memory of the ferry journey from Gdynia to Kalskrona. We encountered a severe storm, and I was terribly seasick, puking for the entire 12-hour trip and unable to even stand up. That ordeal has permanently put me off from ferries and cruise holidays.

In the old days, second millenium mean I, there was just some pills and hard stomage and clear head to help sea sickness or just nothing. Eva is heading up north through rain and snowfall. Hope she read business mails?!

Welcome to Sweden Eva! I suspect the last thing you showed us was getting a new set of winter tires fitted, and if you have those, you'll do just fine on the snow and ice. Snow covered ice can be a bit dodgy, so just go slow if you feel like you need it. :D

Modern cruise ships are very large,with special stabilizers, and you often can't even tell you're moving. People cruise for lots of reasons... #1 it's fun, #2 it can get you to interesting places without being exhausted by land travel, #3 can be very affordable compared to multiple hotel and restaurant expenses... and many other reasons. Try it! Some cruises you can take your dog but they must stay in kennels and you go visit them.

Wow! I live in North Texas, and the coldest I remember it being here was 0 F (-17.7 C) in 1989 I think. It may have been colder when I lived in Minnesota as a child, but I don't remember it.

If you are inland, the air is dry. If you are next to the coast, the temperature you feel may be like 20 degrees colder. My worst experience was with "only" -15C, when the sea was foaming so strong that while walking in the fog, it felt like it's crystallizing right in the lungs. And, I've experienced close to -40C.

Re: the seasickness from a “cruise veteran”. 1. I don’t typically get super sea sick but when I feel queasy outside in fresh air is always better even when it’s cold. 2. If you know you are going to experience sickness, a scopolamine patch that you can put behind your ear is a tremendous help. 3. One of the cruises we were on that experienced rough weather put out bowls of green apples all over the ship. Apparently the green apples help with the nausea. I can vouch for this remedy since I did get a little sick on this particular cruise.

Even after 50 years of sea service, including 2 South Pacific round trip voyages, I still feel anxiety when it is time to head out again on open ended trips. You are leaving the known into the unknown and there are no guarantees. It’s funny though because you will drive down to the neighborhood market without a second thought. But there are no guarantees you will return from that either. Life is a risky business. You’re doing great Eva. For future sea voyages try “Transderm Scope,” a little patch on your neck behind an ear or “Sturgeron,” a pill. Both are pretty effective and won’t put you to sleep.

That reminds me of a trip in 1990, on the Marine Atlantic ship MV-Evangeline, left Sydney, NS 15°C and calm. We went on Dangerous Goods night because in cars it is cheaper, OOPS! We noticed each car had a rubber barrier in front and behind and 4 chains. Trucks were chained down and to points above. Each truck had 36 to 48 chains. In the room there was 4 Berthes all equipped with both seatbelts and a rope body net. Once out on the Cabot Strait we were in an 80KT Nor'easter, the ship parks at 90/kt. All night you would hear the bow rise out of the water, then slam its way back in. The trip was scheduled for 10 hours but was 19 hours fighting the storm. Once off the boat, it was raining at about 5°C it got progressive colder. By time we passed Gander snow was accumulating, we had a few moose encounters. One spot a big moose was scratching his back on the cab of a big rig and it pushed the truck into the ditch. It snowed all week. I didn't get sick! That was in June.

Hi Eva, i love your dog! My wife and i spent about two months in Canada, Britisch Columbia. Drove with a camper through the Rocky Mountains ,later for 5 weeks on a farm, there were 2 German Shepard dogs and we become big friends, they hoald when we left and went home. I remember in the 80’s you could tell when the ferry from Poland had arrived to Nynäshamn by just looking at the caravan of Fiat 127 on the way to Stockholm. I’ll bet you’re car is luxurious in comparison 😀

I'm also from Poland, like Ewa. My grandparents went to Bulgaria in a small Fiat in the 1970s. As far as they could go. The whole family could fit in, and when the car broke down, grandpa repaired it himself with a hammer. The two kids in the back were able to get some sleep. Despite appearances, this is a really roomy car. Those were the times when traveling was very difficult and often impossible, but people did what they could. A lot has changed in the meantime.

I've been driving a Landrover Series 2 for some years, this is another experience at all. If you have seen the film "The Gods must be crazy", there is a scientist who drives a Landrover S2 he calls "the antichrist". I was driving down the autobahn in a snowstorm when the windshield wipers fell off and within seconds the windshield was clogged with snow. So for the rest of the journey I had to wipe the windshield with my hand leaning out of the window. Ah, and heating notoriously doesn't work, so you would sit in the cabin with winter coat and gloves.

@@evazubeck but offroad it is great. it had a hand throttle so you could let the car drive slowly even when you weren't sitting in it. you could switch on 4WD, reduction gear and it would just go on and on until it hit something.

Eva, the cabin is not the best place to be for sea sickness, but I can see you were too tired not to be there. If not tired, being near the bow outside with the wind on your face, eyes on the horizon helps alleviate it, just as you recovered walking around outside @ 17:00. Maybe being delayed contributed to your sea sickness. I use delays as opportunities to read or to meditate. You can create a positive moment of the delay (instead of negative). People go on cruises to escape the land, only to find they are "stuck on a ship". Being in command of your own ship is much better, or at least makes one feel less stuck. Some of us are built for the Sea, some are built for the Forests, and some are Built for the Mountains. Some are mostly OK with everything- i enjoy being near the ocean and a small ferry crossing for a little while, but nothing huge like a cruise. I know several who love cruises and jump from boat to boat as they can to enjoy; It feels to me that it's kind of like taking a slow airplane to different destinations with better food and stuff. Like You and Vilk, I am definitely more of a Mountain/Forest type of person. It's so healing! Sorry the trip started out sort of rough, but it makes the peacefulness and quietness of the trip all the more enjoyable! Best part about solo traveling and driving yourself (imho), is that you've got almost full control over everything. When you leave, how far you go, etc. And I love that part!

We too have a defender and i can agree... worst to drive on a road trip 😅 great on the farm, never fails us, never gets stuck, but on the road... nooo good haha! You should have tied that sled bottom (hard side) down to your roof rack because the way you had it up there, it's a scoop like a sail, causing drag and reduces fuel efficiency and that drag increases the chances that it will come loose.

If your going to be driving in the extreme cold, good chance you get easier driving conditions. The colder it is, the more dry the powder is and the drier the ice is, good. Below the 20's Fahrenheit, the less your tires melt the surface of the ice. Below 20 is good on snow and ice. Mid 20's to 32F, bad. You should make great time the further north you go road condition and temperature depending and storms. Great video!
