Something to consider in the Carbon Fiber vs Aluminum: In freezing cold temperatures, the carbon fiber resin can start to be a bit of an impact shatter concern.

What the poster said above, I’ve used aluminum in freezing temps and would have ice cold hands in minutes. I’d personally go with carbon fiber.

@@WillBiavati for under $20 you can get a motorcycle grip heater kit which is just a couple of thin electric heat films and some shrink wrap. To power it I have a few solutions. One is to get a 12v power pack. In the coldest conditions batteries don’t work so well, so I put the second grip heater on the battery pack and/or keep it near my body. My other trick is to make part of the tripod into the battery pack - photographers are always complaining about battery life, and you’re carrying around a bunch of hollow tubes…

Tried one of these recently, brand new, the legs are have so much play when extended it was literally impossible to get a steady shot unless it was completely static. The action of unlatching the legs was satisfying and felt robust, the head was decent and it was fairly light and simple to use. Features are great but the tripod has to function as well as a tripod first and foremost. Great video though Gerald!

@geraldundone the main reason why manufacturers started making plast, cork, rubber handels/gribs on carbon fiber tripods is that after rough handling over years carbon fiber start splinter and small thin fibers start stick out and you don't wanna get that in your hand. It will never come out again and can potentially be dangerous. However there is various types of lacquer that can safe your tripod if the carbon start splinter so that's the positive side. I'm happy the most carbon tripods today comes with the protection gribs 🙂

Love the look of the new setup and the TV is surprisingly effective. You might not have room for it but it seems you need a dedicated area for product reviews if that’s still going to be a focus for your channel. Lining up guests for the talk show is a lot of work and planning administratively so it’s important to consider how you’ll be balancing this all out as you grow your channel to the next level. Best of luck to ya!

this tripod does look great, but I still stand behind the immense value in the (I believe somewhat new) SmallRig FreeBlazer. $250 for just the legs and the 75mm bowl mount, single stage release, 72 inches tall, carbon fiber, removable feet with spikes underneath, adjustable mid level spreader, ticks damn near every single box except for being able to get ultra low to the ground. But combined with the ever popular 502 fluid head, you're looking at a damn solid $500 setup that I would 10/10 recommend

Curious how this directly compares with Smallrig and Sirui’s single-latch tripods. Smallrig offers the most affordable solution
@billyoung9538
@billyoung9538 Жыл бұрын
The Sirui tripod has a much better head, and overall is a better value if one is after a total tripod & head solution, because adding an equivalent head to this one would end up costing as much if not more than the Sirui. SmallRig's carbon fiber tripod is roughly the same price as this, but it's a tandem leg style with mid level spreaders. That means the SmallRig can't drop as low; however, it might offer more overall rigidity when in the classic tripod stance. The SmallRig head on the carbon fiber legs is also slightly better than the YC onion as it does have pan drag, and has been verified to be very smooth, but it's head is nothing compared to the Sirui head, and if one were to add an equivalent head after it would push the SmallRig's price beyond that of the Sirui. That said one would have tandem legs vs single shaft if that appeals to one. With all this said I agree that it would be great if Gerald could review the other two at some point

I rented the Small Rig legs and for the price, it’s going to be hard to beat. However, for my use case, that aren’t ideal. I need something quick to set up, tear down, and can quickly be adjusted to fit quickly into unconventional spaces. Which basically rules out any legs with a mid spreader. The legs are chunky bois too which makes transporting on location a little quickly. I’ve only heard that the Sirui struggles from sticky legs so they don’t always seem to deploy as quickly as they should.

Perfect timing! I'm in the market for my first professional level tripod, and was eyeing off the Sachtler Flowtech. It's awesome that there are some new options coming out that are emulating the Sachtler, with the single release mechanism at the top of the legs, without the hefty price tag. I'm happy to pay for quality features, especially if the build quality suggests a long life, but it's hard to justify spending over $6,000 Australian dollars! I've recently discovered the SmallRig AD-100 FreeBlazer with 4167 legs, and also the Sirui SVT75 legs with the SVH15 fluid head. Perhaps you could do a comparison between these three models Gerald; this one and the two mentioned above, and weigh up their features, build quality and value for money? Love your channel mate! 🦘🇦🇺

@@MayerAd It's an exciting time to be shopping for a tripod hey! I'm not surprised to hear about the SmallRig, as it looks a bit flimsy with the plastic locking mechanism. The Sirui on the other hand looks tough, and is apparently a bit of an effort to push the locking mechanism closed. At least that bodes well for longevity, as you would have to expect it would get easier with use. The 6 year warranty is also rather confidence boosting.

@@brucebrucestofiston5554 thanks for the tip. I wasn’t aware there was an Aussie brand that’s got such a good reputation for quality tripods, like Røde has for audio gear. Miller’s new range of CiNX fluid heads could be a good option to pair with this YC Onion Pineta Peak tripod. The CinX 20 and 23 are both fitted with a 75mm clawball, along with an adjustable pan and tilt fluid drag system and counterbalance, so they would go well with a 75mm bowl like the one on this YC Onion tripod. As Gerald points out in the video, the Onion head lacks these features. Thanks mate! I just got the E-Image EG06C2 kit consisting of the GH06 fluid head which Gerald reviewed previously and the GC752 carbon legs which he also suggested. This kit cost me $1095 plus $30 shipping here in Australia and I have to say for what you get is incredible value. I watched a review of the Flowtech 75 plus Aktiv 6 head and could barely see any benefit over my new system except perhaps Sachtler bragging rights - though is it really bragging to say “Hey I paid 6x for the same as you!” One of my uses is super zoom photography - and occasional video - at up to 2000mm. I am super impressed that I can get smooth panning on my new kit at that 2000mm focal length. To say I love this kit is an understatement. I could have bought the $6000 FT kit - and briefly considered it - though in hindsight that now seems like a moment of mild madness. The GH06 head is everything Gerald said and then some. If you have around an Aussie Kay to spend the E-Image kit is a no-brainer. No I do not have any affiliation whatsoever with the product or company. I’m just a regular feller who loves a great buy.

Great that you're experimenting. What you did in the other (original) studio can only be described as a massive achievement, extremely high-quality videos, one after the other, with your signature machine-gun tech delivery style, extremely tight scripting, all done with control and grace and charm. So hat's off on that. The challenge now will be to get the setup right. Not sure we need the separate chair angle for anything if there's nobody being interviewed. If it's one thing photographers hate, it's wonky, off-kilter frame proportions, and even with the bear there, it's just not fun for the eye. On a positive note, I agree with many others here that your intelligence and sharp critique-ing approach come across well in this rather less scripted, more bullet-point conversational delivery. We love you for your laser-sharp mind; you deliver the goods. I don't need Jimmy Fallon. 😅 But it would be cool to see you in dialog with some great photographers or equipment folks, using your curious and articulate, penetrating brain to extract valuable nuggets and take apart various topics. Good luck - and have fun! 🎉

I really love to see those tripod stands for a 100mm Fluidhead base. All Are basically 75mm and are playing in a small Ballpark when it comes to cameras. My Cameras can go up to 19KG and i got a really old Sachtler Video 18 II (build in west Germany, yea that old) for this. With a nice Pair of legs that Head would be amazing to use more often.

Unfortunately I had a bad experience with this brand. I used it for a few months and while in the process of setting up at a location the bowl cracked leaving me with a bipod that had most of the bowl attached to it and a third leg with a small chunk of bowl attached. It had not been dropped or hit with anything. I have never had anything like this happen with a piece of equipment. Very disappointing. They got me a replacement bowl after about 3 weeks. I got the legs attached to the new bowl but now one of the thumb buttons on one of the legs will not function correctly. Invest the money and go with the Sachtler sticks.

I had the exact same experience, one leg broke off. The bowl-head is not heavy duty at all.
