Just for future reference, “forced death area” is usually just referred to as an “anti-softlock” in the mm2 community. Because they’re made to make it annoying to try and die while still making it possible and avoiding the “soft lock”.

My evil plan for the best troll checkpoints. You know, if I could actually both design AND beat the level needed for it (on the design side, I just lack sufficient meanness and trolling knowledge, but yeah): 1. Checkpoint one is actually a HALF-trap. You get a mushroom when you get to CP1. But the trap is that it makes you go through a bit of difficult stuff, that then drops you off right at the very start, or if you do something a kaizo-hack-degree of correctly, enough to get to the "correct" path, drops you off instead right at... Checkpoint 1 again. However. As noted, Checkpoint 1 gives you a mushroom, which is in fact something you DO need (and which you cannot lose until you reach Checkpoint 1 AGAIN unless you want to fail getting to checkpoint 2). So the fact you get this checkpoint is actually just a big waste of time. Now, to proceed, you need to use the fact that you have a mushroom in some way, a short distance after CP1. And then, you have to actually KEEP that mushroom all the way until CP2. Or lose everything. And there will be several false paths that lead you to CP2, but require you to sacrifice a hit (and lose the shroom). 2. Checkpoint 2 is, well, the only "real" checkpoint. Upon hitting it, you get nothing. Directly over it, there is a mushroom that falls somewhere you cannot see and is inaccessible, unless you are spawning in AT CP2. Near it, there is a [?] block which contains a powerup. This powerup is a mushroom if you are small, but either a fire flower or cape/leaf/etc if you are already big. Now. CP2 is located such that you have no choice but to enter a pipe and fall down a hole. And when you fall down, you find yourself... right NEXT to CP1. But you do not actually HIT CP1. It is one or two blocks left of where you fall down. However, NOW you need to actually keep your new, improved powerup through a good chunk of the whole thing all over again. No, its even worse actually. You actually need to take the path from CP1 that sends you back to the START at the end, instead of just back to CP1. And somewhere just BEFORE CP1, is where you need the improved powerup in question. It is at this point that you are in the final stretch. And, as long as you survive one final test which requires you to take 2 specific hits at the right times, you reach the goal very quickly from there. This is of course a troll itself because, well, the entire level thus far has trained you: "DO NOT take a hit or ELSE!" And indeed, there will be one or two hard-to-spot paths on this final section which appear to get you through without taking a hit. But they, unfortunately, will in fact take you to a place that hits you with a buzz-saw, and then immediately takes you to... where else? Check. Point. ONE. No. In the final path. You actually DO want to take 2 hits. Not more, and not ever taking a path that will let you AVOID taking a hit. The paths should all be easy to see, but yeah. Anyway, once the player figures out that they just want to go for any path that hits them only once, and repeat this twice, then they can reach the pipe or door that goes directly to the top of the goal. ...or so it seems. But the goal bounces them away with hidden springs. Down a few blocks, where they will no doubt despair. They land right on top of a pipe, leading to CP1. The pipe is right next to the flag, and just separated by some bomb-destroyable blocks. Fun fact though. That pipe, while it leads to CP1, also happens to be a blue pipe that slowly spawns Bob-ombs. So to actually win, just run away from the goal, a bit, and wait for one to come out. Now, by now the player has been through a lot, so give a small hint, by placing an arrow pointing at the ground next to a spike, as though suggesting to just kill themself, but of course, unlike any other such "better to die arrow" you have in the level. It is NOT pointing at the spike, but the ground 2 blocks away from it. And as long as they stand there, the Bob-omb will come out of the pipe. And there will be much rejoicing. You know, assuming they don't then, well, die to the bob-omb. Which I'm sure at least someone would do. So there you have it. My outline of how I would make a troll level to really... maximize the checkpoint trolliness. Anyone is free to use this basic idea. I haven't actually mentioned much of trolls outside of how I would use the checkpoint either, so you can use any techniques you can think of to actually fill out the rest of the level. Heck, change whatever part of what I said that you want to change too. Maybe you can think of a way to make the troll SEEM even worse. No credit is necessary. I offer this idea to EVERYONE who wants to make a troll level, to try out. I will however request that, if you are a well known enough level maker to sometimes get praised by one or more youtubers, that you make sure to submit the diabolical level to a bunch of them, so we can all watch them suffer! Yeah, I don't want credit. I just like watching these poor guys suffer, apparenty. I mean, its really not cruel, right? They are doing this to themselves. They can stop any time they want. Ok, yes, they sort of "can't" because they know they must SUFFER for the sake of views and thus income. But hey, if they truly hated it, they would be trying to go for fewer hard/troll levels, right? I do hope levels with this architecture start getting made.
