This episode absolutely ruined me because we as the audience expect, even with the information that Madame Kaji asked Mizu to kill Kinuyo, for Mizu to continue her streak of doing her own thing and finding her own path, and to save Kinuyo. We are tricked into thinking that's what is happening, and then Mizu snaps Kinuyo's neck. It's absolutely gutpunching, especially since you can see how much of an impact this is making on Mizu, who is usually pretty cold and doesn't really show emotions except for anger.

I especially enjoy that Maya Erksine’s performance doubles down intimidating the boy; like I really felt that she channeled the legend of the Onryo for the boy to experience

I also think Madame Kaji was either not entirely truthful, or just assumed Kinuyo would be treated badly. She seemed to be in good spirits, no sores, and didn't immediately want to leave. There's also talk that with the bird scene just before, she was actually pregnant and wanted to stay.

This episode hits especially hard when you realize that kinuyo was most likely pregnant. The bird that Mizu killed had eggs in their nest which was probably a metaphor for kinuyos death. the fact that she seemed hesitant of Mizu despite knowing she came from the one woman who showed her affection seems to affirm it

And she seemed to be well taken care of. So the Madame either just assumed she would be treated badly or straight up lied and wanted to take Kinuyo from the clan as revenge. We take everything she says as fact, but Kinuyo could have run away for love. Who knows.

Kinuyo could have been taken care of, but that doesn't change the fact that she had trauma linked with men and physical abuse. Her being pregnant might have given her a new purpose for living, even if she was in constant pain

I LOVED the show, but one of my criticisms of the show is the degree of loyalty that Taigen showed this episode… at this point, he never showed to be particularly honorable (just prideful of his reputation), and as far as we know, he was disgusted by Mizu given his racism/bullying since their childhood. Also, I don’t remember, but was he antagonistic at all against the brother of the master of his school? I don’t recall. I struggled to believe he would go to such torture for Mizu.

That’s not unfair, but I really think witnessing Mizu survive the 4 Fangs, decline Heiji’s offer of a station MUCH more prestigious than anything he’s been close to, and escaping the arrow storm impressed him so much that he’s at least arrived at “Mizu’s mythologically that good - we’re on the same level, and it would be a shame if he were snuffed just because I forfeited” It’s not loyalty, but vanity; only thing I can’t really speculate away is the fact Taigen can’t deny his capture and torture are totally Mizu’s fault

The way I see it, Taigen is still being full of himself at this point. He has been shown to be the kind of person who just never backs down and shows defiance regardless how much shit he is in. I don't see this as him protecting Mizu as much as him showing defiance against the people who torture him.

@@Finkeren I wish they had double down on something like this, but the fact that he was the top student at the dojo (which, being low born yet so highly appreciated, implies he was good at following orders, especially considering Japanese culture) and that he was playing a part/role to trick the princess into loving him so that he can climb in status makes him more of an opportunistic character at the beginning. At that point in time, I would have believed Taigen helping instead organizing a search for Mizu with the condition that he gets his 1v1

They are clearly fictional (let's face it: the show is not going for authenticity) I think Taigen works and he's definitely not going to be able to cut a deal with Heiji Shindo after the role he played in him losing his hand, even if he wanted to.
