Brenton Wood was a west coast R&B crooner who voice was so pristine and precise with a beautiful blend of pop and soul. Starting out as a session singer, his 1967 album Oogum Boogun rose to Number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100's producing several hits. This is a great old tune, catchy melody and lyrics and wonderful vocals and backing band. Great reaction Harri. ❤ The 70's were so great for hippy clothes and groovy bands. 😊 Great memory Cynthia. 👏👏Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦

This is such a catchy song it’s hard not to like it! The title of the song is actually “Gimme Little Sign”, and I believe it was his biggest top 40 hit. “The Oogum Boogum” song was his first hit. Thanks for the fabulous request, Cynthia, and for your reaction to-and reunion with- this song, Harri.

Cool! I've never seen that clip before. I'm glad he didn't skip over the falsetto parts, even if he only did them once. That sounded live to me. The bass isn't quite so heavy on the studio recording and he adds more falsetto embellishments too. When you're ready for more from Brenton Wood (aka Alfred Jesse Smith), check out some of these tasty tunes "I Think You've Got Your Fools Mixed Up", "I Like The Way You Love Me", "Me And You", "Baby You Got It", and the "Oogum Boogum Song".
@caroleathenacosta-songwrit91936 ай бұрын
Yes, definitely live. You're right about the falsetto embellishments. Also the last lick of the organ solo had a slightly different cadence on this video compared to the studio version.

@marxlover1006 ай бұрын
Good discovery, Harri. Brenton had a couple of albums and a lot of 45s in the late '60s -- good for about 40 or 50 really great songs. Many of his songs were slow love ballads and they were dripping with soul. He sometimes went falsetto, which added to the soul sound. He should have been bigger, as far as his fame, but he was sort of relegated just to the west coast. And you pointed out that his dancing should have kept him fit. Actually, Brenton WAS an athlete in college, competing as a high jumper in track & field. Oh and the actual title of this song is "Gimme Little Sign".

I'm back to see and listen to you review this one again, Harri. You seem to love it as much as I still do. He has great stage presence, too, and sounds in my ear so true to the studio recording. Should've hit #1 on the Billboard chart, but only went to #9. Can't believe that! Lotta great songs from the 60s, and this is definitely one of them. And I agree about the 60s and 70s fashion,dance, etc. We watched Soul Train for the fashion and dancing. I see he also covered "Another Saturday Night." I remember Cat Stevens' recording.
@jdw56786 ай бұрын
The actual title is "Gimme Little Sign," and is one of his two big hits. The other is "The Oogum Boogum Song," from the year before (1967).
