The movie with Dolph was all I had as a Punisher fan coming up, but when I saw Jane, I didn't think it could get better. Then Mr. Stephens movie dropped, and it got no better than that. Don't get me wrong I did love Bernthal, but I completely agree with you on the show. As an author I feel like the Bernthal show was written by people who wanted to show his duality but leaned way to much into Castle and not the costumed Punisher. Amazing video.

It was actually from The Garth Ennis punisher Max comic and the female director of punisher war zone was hitting the nail on head with the movie by putting the Brutal Violence, The Bloodshed, the shootouts the frank castle gets into.

They pulled elements out of Punisher Max, but it wasn't a panel for panel adaptation. Same thing with Jane's Punisher, they lifted a lot of elements from Ennis's Punisher run (characters, subplots, Castle's personality), but there were definitely flaws. Honestly though, Lundgren's Punisher was probably the least flawed movie and best depiction of Frank Castle.

@@blackc1479it wasn't a missile but a rocket-propelled grenade. And wasn't heat-seeking but regularly, normally aimed - it simply looked heat-seeking because of the over-the top way it was shot and produced, with the grenade's trajectory drawing an spiral pattern, indeed, but as a professional comic book artist and occasional storyboarder I can tell you that that's only meant to be there as visual flair, not as an actual implication that that thing was meant to be/represent an IR seeking missile. No, it isn't. It's awful. I love Jane as Punisher - specially now, in his older age, as he's become the splitting image of Mike Zeck's seminal, iconic portrayal of the Punisher and one of my favorites - but the script is SHIT. Frank fucking Castle needing a cringe worthy, trope-filled pep talk from a random, bored convenience store clerk to go help a poor girl in need only because she's 'hood? Fuck that awful embarrassment of a 'script'. An AI could do better. That's not Frank. I don't know what's more embarrassing, the script itself or the fact that so many self-proclaimed fans of the character swear over the short that -shat- came out ot it, as proven by how many upvotes the comment I'm replying to has.

totally agree. the ideal punisher should be a giant of a man himself (he's only human hence his size must be something that we can believe will win physical duels without a lot of effort), stoic and silent like a coiled up force of nature about to burst at any moment. the threat should be implied in his holding back. my issue with Jon Bernthal's Punisher was not one, he was not physically imposing enough and that he talked and jerked around too much as if he was high on drugs or something. and he does try too hard to be intimidating with the yells and grunts and what not, instead of holding back and being thraetening that way, Jon's Punisher goes way too hard to try to be intimidating. and the TV series makes him go after ex-soldiers, some of whom won't even know the shit their boss does! what the Punisher does is punish criminals for their crimes and in Warzone we see the effect killing an innocent (or a collateral damage) has on Frank.

DL was a great depiction of Castle back then, but the film was a gigantic buildup for a sequel that never was, still recommend a watch for sure. Warzone had the comic accurate violence, but Jigsaw’s origin was so rushed that it made the movie so goofy IMO. Netflix’s Castle and Jigsaw in season 1 specifically were a great use of grounding the characters or finding a non-adaptation way to connect the two with the conspiracy. They made Agent Orange into a joke, nothing like the comic counterpart in a way why he needed the name at all, he could’ve just been a generic CIA antagonist. Jigsaw was great in season 1, but his motivations of killing Frank for giving him slight scaring in season 2 is just stupid.

Jon B. Is a handsome bro and probably a great dude IRL. He does brooding intensity well, but he's always just playing "Shane" at a dialed up or dialed down level. He's last place on the tier list. Kinda like Joaquin as the Joker. He has the most screen time to luxuriate in the role of the character compared to previous incarnations... and he has more of a say in the scripting...every scene and camera angle is designed to help him seem the most epic. Even with those cards stacked in his favor the previous performances ring more true to me.

Ray was the best punisher, the most comic accurate on screen. Frank is supposed to be a stoic force of nature who's strategic in battle. Unlike bernthal who got captured, shot, and beaten to a pulp by criminals most of the time which was ridiculous, also him expressing his emotions to daredevil was way out of character, frank would never do that at all. Frank is also a loner because he's the most dangerous man alive so giving him a surrogate daughter was also out of character for him. And don't get me started on bernthals war cries every time he fought that shit got so annoying. All an all bernthal gave off wolverine vibes then punisher.

They used Garth Ennis dialogue in warzone, and it worked perfectly, Warzone was the punisher everybody wanted , Netflix did that too putting plotlines from the welcome back frank , another Garth Ennis epic take on the punisher, but that fkn actor was just not him , he made frank castle looks like a regard , frank doesn't have PTSD , frank is a psychopath, but he just found the right people to kill , Dexter is more frank castle than this Netflix abomination was.

I think that Stevenson and Bernthal are tied for top slot. Despite the cartoonishness of the villians, Stevenson IS the finished product Punisher. However, Bernthal brought what Stevenson lacked. That being Frank's trauma. Just my opinion.

The most brutal and closest one to comics was Ray Stevenson. Jon Bernthal is just playing the same character he plays in every movie. He has no clue how to play Frank Castle.

Why not make a Punisher film in the MCU where super powered villains and heroes also do things like in Daredevil? Why did the Netflix series make it about CIA crap and pretend ninjas and magical beings and super powered people exist? Can't they do both types of things?

Colin Salmon was the FBI Agent, Paul Budiansky. He was excellent in Warzone. I quite liked Warzone. Dash Mihok was great as Detective Martin Soap. The wife of the undercover detective in Warzone was played by Julie Benz, who played Darla in Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv series.

And the dark-skinned guy who did parkour and was thrown from the roof to get stuck in the fence?, brutal!. The final scene in the church with the illuminated sign announcing "Jesus saves" is also very good, and when Punisher appears, even the messenger of God leaves... haha! What good symbolism :D

Had Punisher War Zone came out in the 80s-90s it would’ve done well. Along side all the other action hero movies, with it’s over the top action. But unfortunately for all those involved in making the movie, it also came out in 2008. Same year as Iron Man and The Dark Knight. And those 2 movies set the standards for the comic book movies, that ‘Punisher War Zone’ just did not meet. To me it just felts so out of place when I saw the trailers. I remember my old friend tried to get me to watch it but I lost interest pretty quickly. Also, I counted at least 3 separate times Punisher would’ve gotten his head blown off in the 1st 3min of the movie, if it wasn’t for the plot. He was suuuuoer lucky it was the cop that snuck up on him, and not some goon. That being said. Thomas Jane, is my favorite Punisher
