Fantastic episode we LOVED it! It made us happy to watch your celebration and relaxation. Being an electrical engineer the battery upgrade was a great segment. It had very useful information and it was edited perfectly to keep it interesting. The technical approach and application was well thought out and right on. Great job. It's good you caught the batteries failing and getting hot before you had other issues with them, 10 years was a long time, they must have been good batteries. Again you have the best videos on KZbin. Interesting, happy feeling, good (and correct) technical information, good story telling, all well shot to get the clips you need, and perfectly paced editing. Most of all a well balanced audio mix, what most other channels on KZbin do poorly. It all works so well. Thank you so much, your effort is worth it.

I have always been so impressed with your mix of seamanship, educational, and seriously good videography. As someone who spent 10 years as a full time solo sailor, it is such a joy to sit back and admire the style you two, now three, bring to the cruising lifestyle. As Vera grows up and is able to watch her parents previous travels, she will have a treasure trove of inspiration to go with her own experiences… Cheers from Anacortes.

I upgraded my boat to Lithium and experienced the issue that the BMS would intermittently disconnect the battery bank leaving me with no power. This first happened at 2AM running downwind with a spinnaker half way between San Francisco and Hawaii. We brought back power with the generator but it was potentially very dangerous. Turned out a single bad cell was causing the BMS to panic randomly and activate the remote isolation switch. Makes sense to have a lead acid backup. - good thinking.

👍 many yachties (sail & power boats) converting their 🔋 systems 'nowadays' miss the point. Not Johan. He listens, studies & learns well.
@achosenman93763 жыл бұрын
Would that not have been avoided if each battery had an integral BMS? That way, if one battery cell went bad, only that battery would be shut down by its own BMS leaving the rest in the battery bank online.
@martinbttgerdahl64393 жыл бұрын
@@achosenman9376 I think you're on to something. Redundancy means more than one of every system. I.e. two complete lithium batteries in parallell with built in bms allows that. I'm on my third season with 2x200Ah litium with integrated bms in my boat. No issues what so ever.
@robertyoungjohns59333 жыл бұрын
@@achosenman9376 The batteries (Super-B) do have an integral BMS. The problem is that they are interconnected to a single remote isolation switch (Phillipi). The logic is that you want all batteries at the same state of charge when they are connected and, if you let the BMS isolate them individually, then reconnecting them can cause massive currents to flow between them. My fix is a backup battery for the instruments with diodes to bring it in automatically if the main bank is disconnected.
@achosenman93763 жыл бұрын
@@robertyoungjohns5933 I see what you are saying. I may have the wrong understanding but I thought the BMS's in the unaffected batteries will not allow a massive current flow from those batteries. The current is limited to what the battery can deliver. A BMS controls both the input and output of their respective batteries. The reconnected battery's own BMS also prevents a situation of too much power flowing into its own battery. It seems I need to do some more research...👍

In my 2400 watt solar system in Mexico, the batteries heat up as the inverter and charge controller drive up the voltage from 24.9 volts to 27.8 to clean the plates of the lead acid batteries. The batteries release Hydrogen gas so I was surprised whether there was a hydrogen discharge into your cabin. Our work area is thoroughly ventilated. Love the show. @tomriley57903 жыл бұрын
One thing to be careful of is to ensure that the wires connecting to the batteries to the BMS or rail/load (I'm not sure exactly how your system works) are the same length - otherwise the different resistance due to the different lengths of wire can lead to one battery being used more than the others. Good luck!

That was totally delightful. The family time, and Vera is sooo wonderfully expressive. The battery stuff is a big subject and I really like your approach. I have this week been designing a metal housing for my much delayed 8 KWhrs Lithium installation. Your approach side steps the problem I am working on, that being what happens in a lightning strike. The batteries themselves can probably handle an energy pulse, but the BMS may not. Much easier to replace a stand alone BMS than ones (plural) built into the batteries as are mine. But what I am doing is separating the Lithium from a House bank of Firefly carbon foam AGM batteries. My Lithium will be charged only from the solar and wind and will feed power to the housebank via a Top Systems TS 1600 100 Amp charge controller. This way all of the electronics are contained effectively in a faraday cage housing and all of the wires attached will be shielded. Another thing I am contemplating is fitting about 50 watts of solar panels to the mast head (flexible solar on either side of the mast) with a small battery up there to power the masthead instruments and a WiFi coms setup. Delos fitted a Maretron WS0 100 masthead no moving parts weather system some years ago, and Brian says that it is still working fine. Sadly no longer available, but there are others.
