I really wish I got to play this. I'm studying IP Law next semester, I feel like defunct software is a genre of media which should not have the same standards applied to it as a book, movies, etc. If a company no longer provides a platform for purchase of the software, I feel like there is room to allow said media to become public domain faster. Kind of like the concept of having to fight to protect your trademark, otherwise you risk "losing it". Obviously, I'm not an attorney yet, but I feel like once the people in government slowly start becoming comprised of younger generations and more cognizant of digital media, this is something which could feasibly happen one day. However, this could be a nightmare with licensed media and trademarks within the software itself, it would be quite the undertaking to get defunct software to become public domain faster, but I don't think it's impossible.
