Just watched this for like the 3rd time and have a question. Why don't you make the repair before drying? i have a cover I'm about to do and there are some fragile edges and I think the drying process and added 'handling' may detach some of the 'hanging chads' for lack of a better term. I just did a repair to a cover and made repairs with Tengujo while still wet, then dried in the press using 2 10-minute cycles, then in between Bristol paper overnight. Turned out pretty good but I think the press dried it too good as I probably should have readded a little humidity before pressing between Bristol paper as you did in this video.

That’s a really great question! The reason I cleaned the wrap and flattened it prior to doing the repair was because the wrap was going to go into the blue light chamber. I like the wrap to be perfectly flat when it’s being light treated so there’s no micro-ridges and valleys in the that would change the effect of the blue light. The hydrogen peroxide additive to the calcium hydroxide solution acts as a catalyst in the blue light chamber for lightening. I didn’t want to do any page repair prior to the lightening process as this would have potentially caused a greater contrast in pulp color due to the change in thickness by the addition of wheat paste and tengujo paper. While we’re not trying to hide the repair, we do want to make it as least noticeable as possible.😊

Hey Travis! I actually shot one of my video series at the heat press but I can’t remember which one it is lol but now that I’ve gotten into leaf casting I think it’s time to make a new video to show how I rapidly dry my wet wraps in the press. I’ll see if I can put something together. I don’t think I’ll release it on KZbin, but I’ll release it to the group on Facebook.

Lot of work with your drying the wrap sandwiched btwn so many paper towels. Your technique dries wrap faster. I use smooth laser jet paper to avoid the dimples left on the wrap from paper towel. Always watch out for dimensional change/shrinkage to wrap.

Thanks Allan. The next video I will cover the measurements after everything is done. The original measurement I took was 357 mm x 260 mm. Afterwards, the new dimensions were 358 mm x 260 mm And my explanation for that was measuring the original wrap, flat and contracted over being dry for 70 years, probably was less than it was original when it was printed. All of the wraps are done now with similar increases in dimensions. What people need to remember is these books are already folded when they are cut so the wraps will have different dimensions when they’re laid flat after the fact. And I do it using this method to speed the process along. It does seem like a lot of work, but I can get an entire book done using all five presses in less than an hour, which is very beneficial to me.

Thank you for that! Seems like there's always something else I need. My metal plates are only big enough for a closed book. I need to get some larger ones. There goes another $60! Lol
