Capt. Larry: I've tried to alert both Dr. Paul and Shelby that their new book is receiving a "Foreword," not "Forward." At this point, I believe they won't correct that. It may be too late, but perhaps you can contact them.

Wonderful job Captain Larry. Are you submerging the cover and wraps in Bestine? And if so, how much? When i tried something similar to a Sensation Comics cover, the book bled ink like a stuck pig, so i didn't know if I just got unlucky or if there's a part of the process I'm missing. Also, what sort of container or surface are you working in? Also, id love to see more video of your leafcasting process some time. I think I'm following along with what you're saying, but I'm more of a visual learner. Anyhow great stuff. Your videos are always great motivation.
@FlyingLComicsАй бұрын
Thanks Jason! As for the container, believe it or not it is nothing more than a serving tray from Walmart for $11. I believe it’s a better homes and garden and I take the handles and I put packing tape over them to seal them. And it is a Bestine bath. Your ink colors should have not run at all with that. It’s generally harmless with the ink retention. So I’m not sure what went wrong there. Anything that’s got some alcohol in. It will release it but but Bestine contains none so I’m not sure why your ink ran 🤔. Once you put it in the solution, you need to keep it submerged and wet at all times. It evaporates off very rapidly. Gentle scraping separates the carrier from the adhesive and keeping it wet, keeps the adhesive loose where you can basically gently scrape it and it will roll off in a ball, but I do keep it submerged

Great job Captain Larry looks beautiful. How do you determine how long to soak the cover/wraps? I'd be afraid of doing more damage then good by soaking wraps/covers too long. I hope you get a 4.0 at least.
@FlyingLComics2 ай бұрын
Once the wrap goes into liquid, if it starts giving up ink, it will do so within the first few minutes that’s a sign that there’s no more sizing left in the paper, which is what retains the ink. As a rule of thumb for myself, I will agitate it for a few minutes and watch for color change, for anything that’s not brownish tan, but never more than five minutes each bath and never more than three bathes for a wrap.

Capt.Larry Do you ever find another copy of a book. To replace the damaged cover, replace missing staples/ pages missing, ripped missing ads that had been cut out? So the staples are very close to or are that same year and issue number, etc.
@FlyingLComics2 ай бұрын
Well, I don’t do any marrying of covers. I just repair what I can from the original but when sourcing staples I try to buy coverless books from the same era and harvest the Staples. Classics illustrated is a perfect example of inexpensive 50s books.

@peteralachi38883 ай бұрын
@@FlyingLComics really makes a difference! There’s no reason why we do some of our leaf casting on one side. You get far better support and more H bonding points with the wrap. Then add to that aesthetic blending. I had no concerns in the past to the amount of pulp though, and now I do. Very much needed. Thanks for this.

White eraser on a cover like that is big no-no. Although you can't see it from that angle, it will usually remove the gloss finish from sleeves. If you look at the record at an angle with a bright light you'll notice it will have dull/matte spots where the eraser was rubbed. It also discolors the covers obviously.

Excellent work, Captain. Did you use formation aid in this project? Looks absolutely smooth and a seamless match! Congrats on the CGC grade, a beauty of a book!
@FlyingLComics3 ай бұрын
No, I did not know what formation aid was until I actually watched your channel professor! I do use it now however in this video is one of the originals. It was just paper pulp with no additive, just paper and calcium hydroxide mixture.
@peteralachi38883 ай бұрын
@@FlyingLComics that works well also. Did for me for years just filtering the pulp but now that I use FA, there's no going back, especially with the high end and difficult fibers!

No one commented that the first graders notes did not mention missing staple, cover detached. Would the original 4.0 still be accurate? And you did no dry cleaning. Nice save on this book.
@FlyingLComics3 ай бұрын
With the detached cover and missing staple I would still put at a 4.0. The rest of the book was quite nice. I replaced a period correct replacement staple. Definitely happy with the grade
@michaelmayrend3133 ай бұрын
Nicely done. I like the idea of using comic bags as the plastic sheet protectors. Do you think the calcium hydroxide is acting as a replacement sizing within the paper or just functioning as a ph buffer? And I remember you installing the valve in the drainage pipe to control the air flow/suction intensity. Do you start the suction off lower and then crank it up for a few minutes at the end of the wraps time on the vacuum table?
@FlyingLComics3 ай бұрын
The CH is just a ph buffer. The valve turned out to be unnecessary as a vacuum control. I just use it as a fluid drain now. The shop vac I use is a variable speed type so I control it from there 😎

At some point someone is going to invent a process where newsprint will be treated and stabilized (without affecting the inks) to last centuries. Any leaf casting of the original page will need to be redone to color match before this perma-treatment is done. The answer to the question is somewhere in the middle.
@MacCarter-s6n3 ай бұрын

Did you get this one back yet?
@FlyingLComics3 ай бұрын
I did. But there was some technical errors on my part. The interior pages were not cleaned to match the cover so there is a stark contrast between the two so it’s been removed from its slab and put back into my project pile where I will go ahead and do proper tear seals and clean the rest of the book before resubmission.

Thank you for showing your process. You said most of the sizing had left the book. By what process? What sizing is used on newsprint?
@FlyingLComics4 ай бұрын
Sizing is used during the paper manufacturing process to help the ink adhere to the paper without smudging or running. It’s also used to give stiffness to the paper. I.e. a napkin versus printer paper. Generally, when it gets damp or wet, the water will very slowly soak in or it will even bead up. As a non-chemist I can’t really speak to how the sizing would leave the paper other than personal experience from wet wraps. I suspect that general oxidation of the paper itself over time. But once that sizing is out and you have that floppy paper, there’s a high probability of ink particles leaving the paper once you get it wet. Silver Age DC books are notorious for this. Paper can be resized, but it’s a bit complicated. I’ve done it on a few books, but by no means have I mastered it yet.
