I completely agree with you Why does a house need to cost 300k There isn't 300k worth of materials and labor in it , I know some of this is just jokes, but really it makes sense, we all need to start buying lots and building our houses by ourselves

It used to be the normal. But good news, you can still build your own house. Get an owner builders permit after you by your lot. First find out what the minimum sq ft is in the county and what the impact fees are. Then you can live on the property while you build or while you call sub contractors to build certain areas. Or find an unrestricted land and live off grid with minimal permits required.

I'm not joking when I say this, my best friends dad went to build a custom home and had multiple bids for a average of 1.1 million. He is a very smart guy, and ultimately decided to subcontract out the build himself and got the house built for $760k. So yes there is a lot of "fat" you can trim when you cut out the middle man. Let me be clear, it was a LOT of leg work he had to do for the better part of a year.

I’m late to the party, but I have to say I’m so glad you put the truth out there finally. I’ve been remodeling my house in my free time and one day I was just minding my own business at a big box store and a guy started talking to me about how much they mark up sub quality lumber when you can go to a local specialty contractor supply store and buy studs for just over $1. A DOLLAR! Think about THAT for a minute. The media just repeats the lies about supply chain “problems” and “natural disasters” and other BS like so many people wanting to build a house blah blah. And that’s how we all get screwed. So, I’m doing all this major renovation by myself, it doesn’t even take two people to do this work, I’ve put in so many LVL beams by myself and it’s nothing. And I’m a full time mom to a small toddler on top of it all. I just got sick and tired of being lied to that building is hard, that it’s expensive and that supplies are hard to come by. Whatever, I’m going to spend the rest of nap time putting in all the new windows that were just delivered.

I got to about one minute and started suspecting something because I have watched builders building and my brother used to build houses. By the time I got to two minutes I finally realized this was just a spoof. HaHa. Guess I am a bit slow.

Yeah i ended up burning my house down because i wanted to rebuild while helping the environment at the same time so i made sure to keep all my empty water bottles stored in the house so they could burn healthy emissions into the environment. that was last week, but this week i am now fully rebuilt and it only cost me 134k to rebuild sense the foundation was still in good shape! Thanks for the awesome tips!

Quit misguiding customers, everyone knows we as contractors don't have to work on Saturdays! We start our new builds on Monday's around noon, and we are usually done by Friday at lunch time, that's why we have time to do Friday Feast! lol Good stuff man, love it!

I am thinking about building one and the contactor told me they are building 2 houses in my city right now and if I want to check it out. I said no but went there anyway. I told them the owner sent me here to talk to the guy who is responsible. "He went to the HQ to get supplies. He won't be here for the next 2 hours." The HQ was around the corner... One guy was watching Tiktok for 20 minutes while the another one was drinking (not USA). Waste of money

I get the joke but using modular technology and other innovations ought to bring down the costs of housing greatly and make it possible for diying major portions of the construction. Those innovations aren't likely to make it to market anytime soon due to regulators. Housing is like big pharma, everybody's gotta get a cut and industry disruptors have a lot of red tape to cut through and let's not forget property tax rates which would be greatly altered if housing costs dropped. I enjoyed the slam but there is some truth in over pricing. Contractors actually do profit 30% to 40% of the price not even discussing the investors markup. We will not even discuss the upgrade scams like lighting cost, you know that $8 dollar light fixture they charge you $275 plus labor. I don’t blame businesses for making profit but America is suffering because housing is no longer affordable and the truths are housing is out of control with mark up
